Living with Lupus

By |2024-05-07T18:37:35+03:00May 7, 2024|Fitness News, News|0 Comments

Living with Lupus Infographic. Click image to view PDF

Lupus is an autoimmune disease that can cause inflammation and pain throughout the body. There’s no cure for lupus, but it can be managed and treated.

Lupus treatment goals

Manage symptoms
Lupus symptoms like muscle pain, fever, rashes, fatigue, hair loss and eye problems can interfere with daily life.
Reduce inflammation
The inflammation caused by lupus can affect many parts of the body, including your joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs.
Prevent flares
Flares can be mild, or they can be serious enough to disrupt — or even threaten — your life.
Minimize organ damage
Lupus can cause major, irreversible damage to the kidneys, lungs and other organs.

Lupus flares can increase a person’s risk of organ damage.

Types of lupus treatment

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) — used to reduce inflammation, pain and fever

  • Steroids — work quickly to lessen pain and inflammation by curbing overactive white blood cells

  • Antimalarials (drugs used to treat malaria) — control symptoms and flares by reducing proteins in the blood that attack healthy cells

  • B-lymphocyte stimulator (BLyS) protein inhibitor — a type of drug known as a biologic that may reduce the number of abnormal B cells thought to be a problem for people with lupus

  • Immunosuppressives (including some chemotherapy drugs) — help stop your immune system from attacking your body’s healthy tissue

  • Lifestyle changes — staying out of the sun and lowering stress can help keep your symptoms under control

Complications related to lupus may need their own treatments, such as:

  • Antibiotics for infections
  • Statins for high cholesterol
  • Anticonvulsants for seizures
  • Vitamin D for kidney problems

Managing lupus

Some lifestyle changes can help keep your lupus under better control.

Protect yourself from the sun

Lower your stress

Get good sleep

Perform low-impact physical activity

Don’t smoke

Finding the right treatment

Lupus is a complicated illness that affects everyone differently. So, it’s important for scientists to keep learning about and developing treatments for lupus.

It’s also important for you to advocate for yourself. Talk to your healthcare provider about developing an individualized treatment plan to help you live your best life.

How Tesamorelin Works – Women Fitness

By |2024-05-07T10:33:02+03:00May 7, 2024|Fitness News, News|0 Comments

In the world of healthcare and medical treatments, new therapies and drugs are constantly being developed to tackle various health issues. One such drug that has garnered attention, particularly in the realm of men’s health, is tesamorelin. This guide aims to provide an in-depth look at tesamorelin, its uses, benefits, and other essential information.

Introduction to Tesamorelin

Tesamorelin is a synthetic form of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), which is vital in the regulation of growth hormone in the body. It is primarily used for the treatment of HIV-related lipodystrophy, a condition characterized by the abnormal distribution of body fat in individuals living with HIV. However, its potential benefits extend beyond this specific application, making it an area of interest for many in the medical community.

How Tesamorelin Works

To understand the benefits of tesamorelin, it’s crucial to comprehend how it functions within the body. Tesamorelin works by stimulating the pituitary gland, which is responsible for producing growth hormones. This stimulation leads to an increase in the levels of growth hormone in the body, which can have various positive effects, including the reduction of visceral fat.

Uses of Tesamorelin

Treatment of HIV-related Lipodystrophy:

The primary use of tesamorelin is to treat the excess abdominal fat associated with lipodystrophy in HIV-infected patients. This condition not only affects the physical appearance but also increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Potential Anti-aging Properties:

Some research suggests that tesamorelin could have anti-aging effects due to its ability to increase growth hormone levels, potentially improving skin elasticity, muscle mass, and energy levels.

Improvement in Cognitive Function:

There is emerging evidence that tesamorelin may improve cognitive function, particularly in older adults, possibly due to the effects of increased growth hormone levels on brain health.

Benefits of Tesamorelin

The use of tesamorelin comes with several potential benefits:

Reduction of Visceral Fat: The most significant benefit of tesamorelin is its ability to reduce visceral fat in individuals with HIV-related lipodystrophy, contributing to improved physical health and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
Improved Lipid Profiles: Tesamorelin has been shown to improve lipid profiles, lowering the risk of developing heart disease.
Enhanced Quality of Life: By addressing the physical deformities associated with lipodystrophy, tesamorelin can significantly improve the quality of life for individuals suffering from this condition.
Potential Cognitive Benefits: While more research is needed, the potential cognitive benefits of tesamorelin present an exciting area for future studies.

Side Effects and Considerations

While tesamorelin offers several benefits, there are also side effects and considerations that patients need to be aware of:

Injection Site Reactions: As tesamorelin is administered through injections, some individuals may experience redness, itching, or pain at the injection site.
Muscle Aches and Pains: Some users report experiencing muscle aches and pains after beginning tesamorelin treatment.
Potential for Increased Blood Sugar: There is a possibility that tesamorelin could increase blood sugar levels, which requires monitoring, especially in patients with diabetes.
It is important to consult with a healthcare provider to determine whether tesamorelin is an appropriate treatment option and to discuss potential risks and side effects.

Tesamorelin presents a promising option for the treatment of HIV-related lipodystrophy and possibly other conditions related to aging and cognitive decline. Its ability to stimulate growth hormone production and reduce visceral fat makes it a valuable tool in managing specific health issues. However, as with any medication, it’s crucial for patients to work closely with their healthcare providers to ensure that the benefits outweigh the risks. With ongoing research, the potential applications and benefits of tesamorelin may continue to expand, offering new hope for patients dealing with these challenging conditions.

Tips for Living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

By |2024-05-06T22:24:20+03:00May 6, 2024|Fitness News, News|0 Comments

Living with multiple sclerosis means you’ll need to make some life changes, including managing self-care. It’s as important as your medical treatment!

According to neurologist Le Hua, M.D., the earlier you address lifestyle issues, the easier it may be to manage your symptoms or even slow down their progress.

Diet

A healthy diet is one that promotes healthy foods and limits less healthy ones, like processed, high-fat and high-sugar foods. Hua recommends the Mediterranean diet as a good eating plan for most people with MS. Not only does it focus on healthy foods, it’s fairly affordable. Recommended foods include:

  • Fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Low-fat dairy products
  • Whole grain bread, cereals and pastas
  • Beans
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Seafood and poultry
  • Olive oil

Exercise

Exercise or increasing activity might seem like it adds to the tiredness that comes with living with MS. But exercise actually reduces fatigue and increases your endorphins, the “feel good” hormones. What you do after your MS diagnosis depends on your fitness level before it. If you ran marathons and went to the gym every day, continuing at that level helps. If you never exercised before, gradually introduce activity. Even walking around the block is helpful. Don’t forget, building up your core helps with balance and reduces falls. Some activities that can improve your core fitness are:

  • Yoga
  • Pilates
  • Resistance band exercises
  • Stretching

Sleep

Tips for Living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS)Many people with MS have a lot of tiredness. Not getting enough sleep leads to even more fatigue, but sleep issues due to MS can have different causes:

  • Anxiety, especially just after diagnosis
  • Pain
  • Getting up frequently to pee

Things you can do to encourage better sleep:

  • Don’t use electronics, watch TV, exercise, or do any activities that stimulate your body or mind two to three hours before bed.
  • Do something relaxing, such as journaling, coloring or any calming activity.
  • Take strategic naps, no longer than 15–20 minutes.
  • Speak with your doctor if pain or frequent peeing is keeping you awake.

Manage your weight

Adipose tissue, so-called fat cells, are inflammatory. These increase MS symptoms. Weight loss should be based on how you feel though, Hua said, not the numbers on a scale. So don’t focus on that. Focus more on improving your diet and exercising. Reach out to a dietitian to guide and support you if needed.

Stop smoking

Smoking makes MS symptoms and outcomes worse, so quitting the tobacco habit is important. Smoking increases inflammation in your body and also negatively affects MS medications. Quitting smoking can slow down MS progression and reduce relapses. Ask your doctor for help or reach out to support groups. It might take several attempts, but each time, you’ll be a bit closer to your goal.

Take care of your mental health

Whether it’s journaling, meditating, or speaking with a mental health professional or support group, taking care of your mental health is an important part of living well with MS.

5 Items for Fun in the Sun

By |2024-05-06T20:23:19+03:00May 6, 2024|Fitness News, News|0 Comments

May 6, 2024, is Melanoma Monday and May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month.

With summer right around the corner, many of us are ready to soak up some sun. But it’s important to remember to protect your skin whenever you step outside.

Most cases of melanoma — the deadliest form of skin cancer — are linked to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. About 1 in 40 women and people assigned female at birth will develop melanoma in their lifetime.

Read: Melanoma 101 >>

The good news is that you can take steps to block harmful rays from the sun and still enjoy your time outdoors. As a rule, try not to schedule activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the UV rays are the strongest.

Here are more sun safety tips and products to help protect yourself from skin cancer.

Body sunscreen

Sunscreen is your superpower against skin cancer-causing UV rays. From your head to your toes, you should apply sunscreen 15 minutes before you leave the house, and reapply every two hours or right after you’ve been swimming or sweating.

Read: Fast Facts: What You Need to Know About Skin Cancer >>

There are many sunscreen options out there, but look for options that don’t contain propylparaben or oxybenzone, two ingredients that have been linked to cancer.

And whatever sunscreen you choose, the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) recommends that the formula checks the following boxes:

  • A sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher
  • A broad spectrum formula to protect against cancer-causing UVA and UVB radiation
  • Water resistance (even if you’re not planning to get in the water, these formulas stay on your skin longer)

As if protection against skin cancer wasn’t cool enough, sunscreen also helps prevent premature skin aging, including dark spots and wrinkles.

You might consider

Blue Lizard sunscreen, Supergoop sunscreen, Black Girl sunscreen

Sunscreen for lips

Keep your pout protected with a lip balm, lipstick, chapstick or gloss with SPF. Like body sunscreen, the AAD recommends SPF 30 or higher and to reapply after two hours or after drinking and eating.

You might consider

ATTITUDE, Carmex, Raw Elements

Reading sunglasses

A stylish pair of sunglasses that double as readers are the way to go if you enjoy a book on the beach. Sunglasses protect your eyes from UV rays and protect the delicate skin around your eyes. Look for a pair that blocks 99% to 100% of UV radiation.

You might consider

Readers, Peepers, Maui Jim

Sun protection hats

Hats with a brim of at least 3 inches can shade all the right places including your face, neck and scalp. Look for tightly woven fabrics like canvas for the most protection. Also consider the color: Darker tones may offer more protection because they absorb harmful rays and keep them from your skin. Note: If you’re thinking about a baseball cap, still look for at least a 3-inch brim and don’t forget the sunscreen on your ears, the back of your neck and all the other spots that may still be exposed.

You might consider

Simplicity Hats, REI, Coolibar

Sun protection clothing

As temperatures heat up, you may want to wear less clothing, but covering your skin helps block harmful rays when you’re outside. Choose lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and coverings for your legs. For added protection, look for clothing with Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) on the label. The higher the number the better: pieces with UPF 50 block 98% of rays. Like hats, darker colors offer more protection compared to lighter colors.

You might consider

Land’s End, L.L. Bean, Athleta

What To Do About Migraine at Work

By |2024-05-06T18:21:40+03:00May 6, 2024|Fitness News, News|0 Comments

Slide 1

Creating a migraine-friendly workplace

It’s not easy to do your job with a migraine, but there are things you and your employer can do to help. Here’s how to ask for what you need when dealing with migraine attacks at work.

Slide 2

Know your rights

Migraine attacks that have a serious impact on your ability to function at work may qualify as a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA offers legal workplace protection for people with disabilities.

Slide 3

Ask for workplace accommodations

Under the ADA, people who get disabling migraines can ask for “reasonable” accommodations at work. These might include:

  • Desk lamps instead of bright overhead lights

  • Unscented products in employee bathrooms

  • Headphones to block out noise

  • Schedule changes

Slide 4

Ask your employer for a flexible schedule

A flexible schedule lets you prioritize your health when you are experiencing a migraine attack. Schedule flexibility might look like:

Slide 5

Talk about time off

Check in with HR about workplace policies for paid time off and taking a leave of absence. If you know you’ll need to leave work for regular appointments with a healthcare provider (HCP), you can let HR know.

Slide 6

Discuss disability

Your employer may offer short-term or long-term disability insurance, and the federal government offers benefits through the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program.

Whether your migraine disease is a disability is decided on a case-by-case basis. You can work with HR and your HCP to see if you qualify.

Slide 7

Stock your workspace

Make sure you have medications and anything else you might need, like cold compresses or sunglasses, close at hand so you’ll be prepared if you have a migraine attack at work.

Slide 8

Share your story

Unless you’ve experienced a migraine attack, it’s hard to understand how debilitating they can be. If you’re comfortable talking to coworkers about your migraine experience, share your story.

Raising awareness about migraine disease can help build empathy and give coworkers insight into how they can support you.

Slide 9

Know you’re not alone

There is no shame in struggling to do your job when you are experiencing a migraine attack. More than 9 out of 10 people with migraine disease aren’t able to work or function normally during an attack.

Slide 10

Stop Running: Gain Tranquility via Yoga & Meditation

By |2024-05-06T12:18:01+03:00May 6, 2024|Fitness News, News|0 Comments

The world we live in can be extremely loud, chaotic and it continues to run at a rapid pace that’s impossible to keep up with. We may find ourselves constantly striving to keep up, or working our fingers to the bone with no time for respite. This world doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. To obtain rest and respite, one must be incredibly intentional.

A Cue from Culture:

Japanese culture works the longest hours of the day with the least amount of sleep than any other culture. Because of the wide spread work-related deaths byway of stroke, heartattack and suicide, there are two terms used – Karoshi meaning ‘over-work death’; and Karojisatsu; ‘suicide from overworking and stress’.

A stark contrast from an overworked and stressed society are European countries who work less hours, spend more time with family, and spend time cultivating spiritual life, all while including physical movement and more resting hours.

Made for Rest:

We were created to work and rest. Sadly, we have moved away from the importance of rest. Sure, we desire it, but we are so busy striving and gathering that we are unable to find true rest for our soul.

When our mind and body hold tension, anxiety, or trauma in addition to the pace of our society, this causes extreme difficulty and is often impossible to cope or regulate. Dysregulation wreaks havoc within our mind and body. We can become isolated, which leads to depression, hopelessness, anger, bitterness or suicidal thoughts. Our body reacts to stress, chronic anxiety, or trauma in a multitude of ways through ailments and disease. It’s critical to return to rest and heal the mind and body.

Tools to Cope:

If you need tools to cope, help in regulating emotions and getting the body back to help, yoga can quite literally change your life. Because meditation is a part of yoga, this powerful ancient practice will change your life. Yoga is set apart from any other physical practice because it incorporates one spirit. Yoga includes the body, mind, and spirit.

Yoga may be thought of as just postures in our western culture. However, yoga is a systemization that includes several techniques. Within these techniques includes breathwork, meditation, how we relate to the internal and external world, a withdrawal from the world, and of course the physical postures.

Practicing yoga and embodying the integration of the elements will help you in achieving a sound body, mind and spirit. This practice will begin the process of healing in the body as meditation will heal the mind, relieving it from stress and anxiety.

Start today by simply withdrawing from the world, spend a few moments taking the deepest breaths you have in a long time. Take a few more moments and ‘just be.’ Think of those things that are good and lovely.

About the author:

Michelle Thielen is a keynote speaker, author of Stretching Your Faith and Exit Wilderness. She is a certified yoga therapist, founder of YogaFaith and teaching somatic movement through dance and yoga for more than 25 years. Michelle travels the globe to aid young, trafficked survivors through practices of yoga, dance, and somatics. She is passionate about helping people all over the world to live a life of purpose.

Chloee Tinnin: Glamour Model Ready to Rule The Fashion World

By |2024-05-03T11:39:46+03:00May 3, 2024|Fitness News, News|0 Comments

Chloee Tinnin is born and raised in Nashville Tennessee. She has been modeling and working out for the past five years. Even though they are her two favorite things to do, she is a country girl at heart. She also enjoy riding ATVs, going hunting or simply at home in my garden. She believes that fitness has always brought a sense of peace and a sense of calmness to her.

She works out every day. She feels that it has helped her through hard times and when life is going great. It keeps her motivated and focused, which is the main reason she loves it. Seeing the progress towards her goals is also important to her. She further add that ‘working out and modeling’ has made it to where she can have the best of both the worlds.

Women Fitness President Ms. Namita Nayyar catches up with Chloee Tinnin, an exceptionally talented model, here she talks about her fitness regime, her diet, her beauty secrets and her story to success.

Namita Nayyar:

You were born in Nashville Tennessee USA, tell us more about your education. Later you decided to pursue modeling and being an Instagram Influencer. This later propelled your career to the height where you are an upcoming social media influencer. Tell us more about your professional journey of exceptional hard work, tenacity, and endurance.

Chloee Tinnin:

Education for me is an interesting story actually. I got diagnosed with dyslexia when I was in kindergarten and had to repeat classes. With this, I was always told you won’t be able to read, write properly or even get through honors. However, they were wrong and with the help of tutoring. I actually graduated from high school with my associates degree and high school diploma. Then finished out at the University of Tennessee beginning accepted into their honor society.

Having to go through others tells you that you’re not good enough is what really got me into social media. Because it was my own space where I could be myself and my goal is to inspire others to become their best self even when the world’s against you. Once I realized I could show everything I enjoy through social media and modeling I became in love with it. I hope to do more with modeling through goals with swim week and fitness modeling. Now with my social media I want to show other you can do it all be country but sweet and model. I’ve always heard you gotta pick one thing you wanna show but why let that stop you when you can show it all.

Namita Nayyar:

What is your future vision as a model, what do you aspire to become five years from now?

Chloee Tinnin:

My vision as a model is more than just what you see through pictures in social media. It’s about modeling and enjoying what you do! In five years I would love to have a fitness app and achieve my goals with begin on sports illustrated to show others you can be smart, confident and motivated even when people say you can’t.

Namita Nayyar:

You enjoy simple living like riding ATVs, going hunting, and working in your garden. A fitness lifestyle gives you a sense of peace and calmness of mind. Elaborate on how you make the equilibrium meet between the shining and fast world of fashion, modeling, and social media with a life of complete pleasure in doing and enjoying small and simple things.

Chloee Tinnin:

Yes, not only do I live life that I love, with things like ATV riding, going hunting, fitness lifestyle, and everything in between. I also maintain in my work the world of fashion, modeling, and social media. While doing both might sound tricky for me, it is perfect. The way I do this is I find a sense of connection between my country side and Social Media by combining the two and having brands that feature my lifestyle.

In doing so, this makes it a lot easier to be able to have the best in both worlds when it comes to my Nashville roots. However, when it comes to modeling it’s very different, because my world of fashion and photo shoots are more connected with my high fitness lifestyle. The reason why is because with modeling it is all about how you look and present yourself. Even though this is all a lot it’s what I love and enjoy. From the calmness of doing things that I love and showing them on social media and getting to experience brands that love the same things I do to the Miami swim week high fashion environment they are both dear to my heart.

Namita Nayyar:

You are a social media personality, model, and fitness proponent. How do you manage such a remarkable multi-dimensional lifestyle?

Chloee Tinnin:

Managing everything that I do into my life is not as tricky as you would expect it to be. The reason why is because the fitness aspect is always a component in my life whether it’s doing social media or modeling. My Fitness is the one thing that actually maintains the same pace in my daily routine. Without it I don’t know what I would do and how I would clear my mind before a photo shoot or going to an influencer event.

I also am huge on a calendar and color coating. Which might sound very funny but this is something that works for me and I find very useful. I have two sets of calendars one that stays on me and one that is at home on my whiteboard. The one that is on me is actually a hardcopy calendar and I like this a lot better than using my phone because it lets me have a moment to myself instead of always looking at my screen.

Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you may wish to share?

Chloee Tinnin:

My exercise consists of weights and two days of cardio within my routine. I love doing this because my weight days are definitely my favorite especially when I do my combination glue workout. However, the main reason why I love it is because the two cardio days are usually on Wednesdays and Sundays, and doing this it helps me break up all of my weight days and get a sweat in while also on Sunday, setting me up for a better week after my cardio session.

MOSH Bars Are Starved of Good Science | Office for Science and Society

By |2024-04-11T18:24:07+02:00April 11, 2024|Fitness News|0 Comments

“It’s never too late to think about your brain health. It’s never too late to think about, ‘how can I delay Alzheimer’s?’, and MOSH is your partner.”

When it comes to dietary supplements and natural remedies, it’s like their advocates are standing at the edge of a cliff. They’re missing the sound evidence to prove that all this works in humans but they want to believe it, and so they take a leap of faith. And that leap comes in the form of words.

Those eyebrow-raising words at the top about MOSH being your “partner” in “delaying Alzheimer’s?” They were spoken by Maria Shriver at the end of a TV segment on KTLA. Shriver is the journalist and brain health advocate who famously married then divorced Arnold Schwarzenegger. She is also the niece of John F. Kennedy. On KTLA, she was interviewed alongside her son, actor Patrick Schwarzenegger, to bring awareness to their new protein bar that apparently “fuels your brain and body” (technically, your brain is part of your body, so it feels redundant but there’s a reason for this). It’s called a MOSH bar. I would have called it the Schwarzenebar: Hard to Spell, Impossible to Ignore. Then again, I’m not on their marketing team.

Because MOSH bars are not pharmaceutical drugs, Shriver and her son can’t claim that eating the bar prevents Alzheimer’s disease or that it treats it: in fact, their website says they cannot make these claims. Strong claims like these cannot be made for the sorts of dietary supplements the bar contains, like lion’s mane mushroom and ashwagandha. Instead, they have to make vaguer assertions and let the customer take the leap of faith. In the process of doing that, the people behind MOSH bars end up feeding the same unfounded hype we see throughout the multibillion-dollar supplement industry.

The wrong kind of experts

Alzheimer’s disease is of significance to Maria Shriver. Her own father was diagnosed with it, and she started advocating to bring awareness to the disease and raise money to help end it.

On the MOSH website, you will read the claim that Alzheimer’s is a disease that discriminates against women. Two out of every three brains that develop the disease belongs to a woman. This is true but a bit more complicated than it might appear. The Alzheimer’s Association points the finger mainly at longevity: women, on average, live longer than men, and the biggest risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s disease is age. From that perspective, it’s not that it discriminates against women but rather against older adults. It may be that the risk of getting the disease differs between men and women of the same age, but there is conflicting evidence there. More studies are needed, and to MOSH’s credit, 1% of sales are donated to support research, advocacy, and awareness on the topic of women and Alzheimer’s disease through Shriver’s own Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement organization.

Funding research is great but MOSH is primarily aimed at consumers and thus has a public face, which includes a wellness blog. I have seen worse offenders, to be sure, but its writer states that electromagnetic frequencies, such as those emitted by cell phones, may disrupt your memory and stress management (not true) and that eating blueberries for breakfast will help you do well on a school test (again, not true). The principle at play here is to ignore the body of evidence and basic plausibility and to latch onto preliminary studies that look either scary or nifty.

On the bright and joyful MOSH bar website, we see a succession of colourful circles with photos of the experts who are recommending the protein bar, most of whom have “doctor” in front of their name. A doctor-recommended protein bar? It taps into our desire for expert vetting, but looking up these people is a reminder that even physicians can believe weird things. One of them calls herself a “neuro-nutritionist” and lists Deepak Chopra as an interest on her LinkedIn profile. Another practices functional medicine (a pseudomedical approach in which a bevy of tests is conducted to find anything that is outside the normal range to be corrected by a laundry list of unproven supplements) and has a book out blurbed by Mark Hyman, the father of functional medicine. Yet another has had his own protocol denounced by the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada for not being science based. And the “board-certified health coach” believes in detox and studied integrative medicine, a marketing term for the integration of actual medicine with unproven and disproven remedies like herbs and homeopathy.

On the MOSH YouTube channel, Patrick Schwarzenegger interviews Dr. Uma Naidoo whose book, This Is Your Brain on Food, I previously dismantled for consistently misrepresenting scientific studies.

As for Maria Shriver and Patrick Schwarzenegger, none of them hold scientific degrees as far as I can tell. So what exactly did they put inside their protein bars to keep our brain fit and is there any reason for these ingredients to be in there?

Noshing on scientific crumbs

MOSH bars contain seven ingredients that are meant to be “brain nutrients and superfoods.” Three of them are quite banal (collagen, vitamin B12 and D3) while the rest are a bit trendier. None of them have been conclusively shown to improve brain function or to ward off cognitive decline.

For collagen, I was able to find two studies in humans: a one-month pilot study in 30 healthy people and a one-week study in 13 men. The hype over collagen and brain health seems to stem from an increase in a type of collagen in the brain of patients with Alzheimer’s disease as a potential protective mechanism, but supplementing with collagen has not been shown to benefit brain health.

Vitamin D supplementation trials for improved cognition in older adults are all over the place in terms of their results. We should all be mindful of the fact that claims of a vitamin D deficiency epidemic are grossly exaggerated and that vitamin D’s messianic attributions are rarely borne out by the data. As for vitamin B12, it is unlikely to help in any way unless you are deficient in it.

MOSH bars also contain omega-3s, but a 2012 Cochrane review found high-quality evidence that there was no cognitive benefit to taking omega-3 supplements for healthy older adults. Have we learned more in the ensuing decade? A scoping review from Quebec-based researchers was published last year. Unlike the Cochrane group, they were much more generous in the kind of evidence they looked at. For healthy participants between the ages of 20 and 60, the largest and longest studies have been mixed in their results. For participants 60 and older, the biggest studies all came up empty. And as the authors report, there are issues with many of these studies, from the type of oil that is used in the placebo pills to the dose of omega-3s that is tested. Overall, the results may whet our appetite but they do not satiate it.

There’s another type of oil in MOSH bars: MCT oil, which stands for medium-chain triglycerides and which often comes from coconut oil. The tie to brain health is that, in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, parts of their brain use less glucose, and so some people started to wonder if something else could be fed to them instead. That something was ketone bodies, which can be produced when our body metabolizes MCTs. The problem is that dying cells in Alzheimer’s disease may not be rescued by simply giving them a different form of energy. As Alzheimer’s Research UK mentions on its website, “There’s so much we don’t understand about how and why nerve cells die during Alzheimer’s, causing its devastating symptoms, but it’s more complex than needing energy.” Also, it’s unclear how MCT oil would prevent Alzheimer’s disease in the first place.

The last two special ingredients are labelled “adaptogens,” which is a loose group of poorly studied herbs and mushrooms claimed to act as buffers against stress with zero side effect. (I’ve written more in-depth about the hype over adaptogens here.) MOSH bars contain ashwagandha, the popular shrub also known as Withania somnifera. There are very few (and very small) studies of the plant being tested to improve cognition in humans, and a 2020 review of the evidence on ashwagandha treating neurological problems states that “clinical studies of ashwagandha for various brain disorders is scarce and not promising.” The problem with plants, it’s worth pointing out, is that even if there is an active ingredient in there, the amount will vary from plant to plant, season to season, soil to soil, meaning that you are getting an unknown dose from one batch to the next.

Finally, we get to lion’s mane mushroom, a popular adaptogenic addition to products like coffee meant to boost your brain power. As with all of these ingredients, there is evidence from laboratory studies that it could help improve things like memory, but the real test comes when you give it to people. A recent review of the evidence highlights three trials in humans, all of them too small to conclude anything.

Even if these ingredients had been demonstrated to improve brain health (which they have not), the question would become: are you getting enough of them in a single MOSH bar? It would be an impossible question to answer. Their website states that, except for vitamins B12 and D, they do not disclose exact quantities of the brain nutrients in their bars because the U.S. regulatory agency doesn’t have recommended daily values and the quantities vary slightly from bar to bar.

In the end, MOSH bars are no different from your typical wellness or functional nutrition product: they are sprinkled with the magical ingredients du jour meant to soothe our anxieties about getting old, wrapped up in a pretty package and hyped up by so-called experts who seem to have decided that scientific evidence was too constricting on their practice. By the way, this is not Patrick Schwarzenegger’s first nutritional rodeo: he has invested in Liquid IV, an electrolyte powder that fuels unscientific anxieties by claiming to be “non-GMO;” Super Coffee, a bottled drink with MCT oil claimed to “increase your focus;” and MUDWTR, a coffee alternative with “Ayurvedic herbs and functional mushrooms,” very much in line with MOSH.

If you want to reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or dementia as a whole, stay physically active, connect with people, eat well, and avoid smoking and high alcohol consumption. If you want to add a MOSH bar to this because you like the taste, that’s fine. But don’t let the Hollywood smiles of its founders and the sprinkle of fashionable natural ingredients fool you. It’s no more brain fuel than your average protein bar.

Take-home message:
– MOSH bars are protein bars created by Maria Shriver and her son, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and whose ingredients are claimed to support brain health
– Their brain nutrients (lion’s mane, ashwagandha, omega-3s, collagen, and vitamins B12 and D) have actually not been shown to improve cognition or delay brain problems in reliable human studies
– This product is endorsed by doctors who have embraced non-scientific practices, like functional medicine and integrative medicine, which rely heavily on unproven and disproven dietary supplements

How Does FitSpresso Weight Loss Formula Work?

FitSpresso is made based on the new scientific evidence regarding the body’s natural fat-burning process. It is found that the fat-burning process turns on and off depending on the circadian rhythm of the fat cells.

Circadian rhythm is a natural biological clock in your body that is responsible for altering bodily functions according to the time of the day. But if you could keep the fat-burning process open for a longer period, it would result in significant weight loss. FitSpresso works by doing just that.

Super synergy is the term used by the manufacturers to describe the supplement’s working process. The term seems fitting considering how FitSpresso’s working process does not depend on one major ingredient or one key process but the collective effect of the entire ingredients present in it.

The formula contains ingredients that can keep your fat-burning window open for a long time even while you sleep. It can also improve the metabolism of your body to supply enough glucose and fat to be converted into energy.

Additionally, FitSpresso contains ingredients that have anti-inflammatory abilities which can soothe inflammations in the digestive tract and support healthy digestion. The improved fat burning ensures effective weight loss support and increased energy levels.

Usage of the term ‘probiotic’ must be revised in a responsible manner in Europe

By |2024-04-11T18:24:02+02:00April 11, 2024|Fitness News|0 Comments

Probiotic food and food supplements have recently gained popularity as they contain beneficial microorganisms, typically bacteria and yeast, believed to have a positive impact on health when consumed in adequate amounts. These microorganisms have been incorporated into a wide range of products, with nutritional and health benefits such as improving gut health, digestion, the immune system.  However, ‘probiotics’, in and of themselves, do not constitute specific health claims. Climate change and evolving consumer trends have redirected the EU´s attention toward new ways of producing and consuming food to improve its safety, quality and sustainability: probiotics microorganisms can offer a multifaceted contribution to innovation and sustainability in food systems.

Germany, France, the U.K., Italy and Spain are the leading European markets for probiotics. They represent approximately 61% of the European market of probiotic supplements. The retail value of the probiotic market (which includes sour milk products, probiotic yoghurts, and probiotic supplements) went from €8.6 billion in 2018 to €9.4 billion in 2022. E-In the meantime, online sales  growth  2021 and 2022 for probiotic supplements is driven by Europe. The track of the online sales in 2022 shows that about 48% of products are from outside Europe labelled with probiotic claims. EU players are at a competitive disadvantage: probiotics suffer from uncertainty at the EU level linked to a restrictive regulatory approach to using the term ‘probiotics’. This led to the peculiar situation in which probiotics cannot be advertised as such on food labels in the EU market.

The majority of the panel of consumers do not feel well informed that a product contains probiotics (57% out of 8.000); when asked if they want to know more about the packaging and label, the percentage rises to 79%.

While the European market for food with beneficial live bacteria known as probiotics is ‘alive’, the EU regulatory framework is stuck in 2006. Requests to the European Commission from the European Deputies Parliament and from stakeholders for overcoming the outdated rules are piling up.In absence of a clear European framework, European countries are adopting national practices allowing the use of the term ‘probiotic’ on the label and communication, under conditions of use.

A consumer survey in 8 countries shows what consumers know and what they would like to know more about when it comes to probiotics. It also highlights that consumers would like to be better informed on the labelling and in communications about probiotic food, and probiotic microorganisms in food and food supplements. The survey was conducted  in 8 European countries (Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Belgium, Germany, and Sweden) on 8000 consumers.

The majority of the panel of consumers do not feel well informed that a product contains probiotics (57% out of 8.000); when asked if they want to know more about the packaging and label, the percentage rises to 79% on average. On average, 79% would  like to see the term ‘probiotic’ indicated on food and supplements with probiotics microorganisms (e.g. in the ingredient list, on the packaging or somewhere else on the label).

The EU should be responsive to innovation, while also providing regulatory predictability. The International Probiotics Association Europe (IPA Europe) is committed to promoting the responsible use of probiotics in food and food supplements. IPA Europe asks for an evaluation of the current understanding of the term ‘probiotic’ in the EU. Clear criteria should be set up to prevent the indiscriminate use of the term ‘probiotic’ and its potential misinterpretation (IPA Europe and ISAPP open-access paper “Criteria to qualify microorganisms as ‘probiotic’ in foods and dietary supplements) .

IPA Asks

We request the support and collaboration of MEPs and relevant stakeholders in advancing this initiative. This proposal aligns with the broader goals of ensuring food safety, consumer protection, and the advancement of the European food industry.
