Adding vitamins D and K to your diet can improve your health
MONROE, La. (KNOE) – Eating well and exercising is important when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. But you shouldn’t forget to take your vitamins!
According to Jen Avis, a nutritionist with St. Francis Medical Group, vitamins D and K are two supplements everyone should add to their diet.
Vitamin D, also known as the “sunshine vitamin,” promotes calcium absorption and maintains adequate calcium levels in the blood.
“If you’re getting these from your diet, vitamin D is in fatty fish; you can find it in mushrooms and it’s our sunshine vitamin,” said Avis. “So if you get like 15 minutes of sunshine everyday, we don’t get a lot in the winter, then you’re going to make your own D.”

Vitamin K is necessary for blood clotting and accumulating calcium in bones and teeth.
“Vitamin K helps us with clotting but it also helps us with direct calcium to the right place,” Avis explained. “And you get vitamin K from dark green leafy [vegetables], you get it from liver, cheese; you know, so things like kale, spinach, those foods.”
If you’re not getting your vitamin K from food, Avis advises taking K2 supplements. Be careful not to overdo it, as a big dose could be toxic.
