Studies have shown that consistently drinking more than three cups of green tea a day can significantly lower the risk of dementia.
According to the New York Post and other foreign media recently, Japanese researchers conducted a questionnaire on coffee and tea drinking habits of 8,766 people over the age of 65 and analyzed data through brain scans, and drinking green tea reduced brain white matter lesions in the elderly.
Brain white matter lesions caused by worsening blood flow in the brain are considered to be at risk for cerebral infarction or dementia.
The researchers said, “A significant association was found between a decrease in brain white matter lesions and an increase in green tea consumption in the elderly without dementia,” adding, “There was no association with coffee consumption.”
In particular, those who drank more than three cups of green tea a day had 3% fewer white matter lesions than those who drank one cup a day, and 6% fewer people drank seven to eight cups a day, the researchers said.
In a previous study by Dr. Leifeng, a professor of psychology at the National University of Singapore, people who consistently drink leaf tea such as green tea, black tea, and oolong tea had a 50% lower risk of cognitive decline than those who did not.
In particular, people with the APOE-e4 mutation gene, which increases the risk of Alzheimer’s dementia, had an 86% lower risk of cognitive decline.
In addition, green tea is also effective for those who want to lose weight. This is because the catechin and caffeine components of green tea promote fat decomposition and increase energy consumption, helping diet.
