CHPA Survey: 92% Say Supplements Have Had a Positive Impact on Their Health

Results of a new survey from the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) found that Americans’ use of dietary supplements as a valued tool to maintain and support overall health and wellness remains high, while three-quarters of those polled say regulatory reform for dietary supplements is needed. The survey, which included 1,169 online interviews among a representative sample of U.S. voters nationwide, was conducted by Peak Insights in February 2025.

Key findings of the CHPA survey on dietary supplements include:

Dietary supplements are a valued, mainstream part of registered voters’ health and wellness routines.

  • 92% of voters agree supplements have had a positive impact on their overall health, wellness, and quality of life.
  • 83% of voters use dietary supplements to support their wellness needs.
  • 82% of voters say it is important to have convenient access to supplements for themselves and their families.
  • 88% of voters are “confident” in supplement safety; 44% of those respondents are “very” confident.
  • 48% believe dietary supplements are regulated by the U.S. government. CHPA added that most consumers incorrectly assume supplements are regulated the same as prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) drugs.
  • A majority of voters agree “current regulations should be updated and strengthened to protect consumers.”
  • 75% of voters support federal legislation to modernize the regulatory framework for dietary supplements [the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA)].

“This survey reinforces what we’ve long known: Americans rely on dietary supplements as part of their daily health routine—and they expect a strong regulatory system to ensure the safety and quality of the products they consume,” said CHPA President and CEO Scott Melville. “It’s time to update DSHEA to further safeguard consumers from bad actors, facilitate industry innovation, and bring greater transparency to this fast-growing category of consumer healthcare products.”

CHPA supports 5 key priorities for modernization of DSHEA

CHPA says a comprehensive approach is essential to protect consumers, build trust, and strengthen the supplement industry. Top priorities, as outlined by CHPA:

  1. Improve Transparency: Mandatory Product Listing (MPL) would increase transparency and improve the ability for FDA, consumers, and healthcare providers to identify dietary supplements and differentiate them from dangerous and illegal ingredients like tianeptine, CHPA says.
  2. Increase Manufacturing Audits: Allowing accredited third-party organizations to support FDA in conducting audits would ensure responsible manufacturing practices across industry and make it harder for bad actors to hide.

  3. Stop Illegal Activity: CHPA is calling for the creation of a New Prohibited Act that would allow FDA to take immediate action against bad actors producing and selling specific illegal, harmful, or banned ingredients.

  4. Strengthen Innovation: FDA’s interpretation of DSHEA’s “preclusion provision” limits supplement manufacturers from considering the use of safe and beneficial ingredients, such as N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) and Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN), for use in future products, CHPA noted, adding: This provision needs to be revised to create the opportunity for responsible manufacturers to bring innovative products to market.
  5. Update Information Sharing for the Digital Age: Current dietary supplement regulations were created in 1994 before websites or online marketing took off, CHPA says, and this creates certain limitations that don’t fit the way today’s consumers commonly access information. Allowing manufacturers to provide published scientific studies and other information about their products on web pages would give consumers, healthcare providers, and others quicker access to beneficial information.
