GBP/USD Forecast: Pound Sterling Outlook is “Neutral-Bearish” say Scotiabank

By |2025-04-09T20:50:31+02:00April 9, 2025|Forex News, News|0 Comments

April 9, 2025 – Written by Tim Boyer

Looking at the near-term outlook, the Pound Sterling (GBP) is likely to trade sideways against the US Dollar (USD) , according to the latest technical analysis by FX strategists at Scotiabank.

“GBPUSD’s sharp reversal of last week’s delivered a break of its one-month range and a push to fresh local lows in the mid/lower-1.28s” says Shaun Osborne, Chief FX Strategist at Scotiabank.

“The RSI has drifted below 50, in bearish territory, and there doesn’t appear to be any clear support ahead of the lower 1.27s.”

The Pound US Dollar exchange rate firmed on Wednesday as US President Donald Trump’s tariffs took effect.

On Wednesday, the US Dollar (USD) weakened against most of its major counterparts as Trump’s tariffs took effect, stoking concerns about a potential US recession.

With the implementation of significant tariffs, such as a 104% levy on Chinese imports, several countries, including China, pledged to respond.

These developments further clouded the outlook for the US economy, intensifying fears of an economic downturn.

As global markets absorbed the news of the escalating trade war, sentiment improved, reducing the appeal of the USD as a safe-haven currency and leading to its decline against many of its peers.

On Wednesday, the Pound (GBP) experienced fluctuations against most of its peers due to a lack of UK economic data, causing it to move in line with broader market sentiment.

In the risk-on environment, GBP exchange rates seesawed, weakening against riskier currencies while holding steady against safe-haven currencies.

This highlighted the Pound’s increasing sensitivity to market risk.

With no major UK economic data to influence trading, GBP exchange rates largely followed the uptick in risk appetite throughout much of Wednesday’s European trading session.

Looking ahead, the main catalyst of movement for the Pound US Dollar exchange rate on Thursday will likely be the latest FOMC meeting minutes.

Set to be released on Wednesday evening, these minutes could add further volatility to an already turbulent US Dollar.

For the Pound, Thursday’s economic calendar will once again be devoid of UK data, meaning GBP exchange rates are likely to continue trading in line with market sentiment as the week unfolds.

Liquid Death’s Unhinged Clown-Killer Ad Touts Bedtime Supplement Collab 04/10/2025

By |2025-04-09T20:45:34+02:00April 9, 2025|Dietary Supplements News, News|0 Comments

Beverage brand Liquid Death’s
latest limited collaborative release promises to help you “Sleep Like The Dead.”

Liquid Death teamed up with vitamins and supplements brand MaryRuth’s for the release of a
limited-edition bedtime supplement. Branded MaryRuth’s x Liquid Death’s Liquid Nighttime Multimineral – Sleep like the Dead, the Coconut Scream-flavored liquid dietary supplement
incorporates Liquid Death Mountain Water with MaryRuth’s multiminerals. The product retails for $24.95 at Walmart and online through Amazon and MaryRuth’s site.

The sugar-free
liquid is described as “containing multiple essential nutrients your body needs to support sleep, less stress, and relaxation.” Those nutrients include magnesium citrate, calcium and
vitamin D3, but not melatonin, an ingredient often touted as a sleep aid.

Liquid Death does have some suggestions about what to dream about when you do fall asleep: clown murders.

A
video ad created by its in-house studio, Death Machine, applies the brand’s irreverent approach of over-the-top parodies of classic ad
tropes: in this case, a familiar sleep aid setup.  A tongue-in-cheek jingle includes lines like “When it’s time for winding down, try murdering some clowns,” and “Nobody
likes clowns, and murdering clowns in dreams is not only fun, it’s legal.” The ad imagines a series of such murders, resulting in multicolored paint blood splattering, which aims to make
the casual homicide non-threatening. The whole scene becomes increasingly unhinged as the ad progresses.

Liquid Death has a track record of attention-grabbing collaborations with other brands.
Last year, it teamed up with cosmetics brand E.L.F. on a “Corpse Paint” release, and also partnered with Yeti and GoPuff on to offer a chance at winning a coffin cooler and a hot tub,
respectively.

The price of Ethereum (ETHUSD) has risen during its recent intraday trading, following the stability of the support level at $1,404, which has provided some positive momentum. USD/JPY Price Analysis: US-China Trade Tensions Ignite Risk-off

By |2025-04-09T18:49:45+02:00April 9, 2025|Forex News, News|0 Comments

  • The USD/JPY price analysis shows escalating trade tensions between China and the US.
  • Trump has threatened to impose another 50% tariff on Chinese goods.
  • The BoJ might pause to assess incoming data.

The USD/JPY price analysis shows escalating trade tensions between China and the US that is sending traders to the safe-haven yen. Meanwhile, the dollar collapsed on Wednesday as analysts increased the likelihood of a US recession.

The turmoil from last week returned to the markets on Wednesday due to a growing conflict between China and the US. Last week, Trump imposed a total of 54% tariffs on China, dimming the outlook for the economy. As a result, China promised counter-tariffs on US imports. In response, the US president has threatened to impose another 50% tariff on Chinese goods. Such an outcome will hurt both China and the US.

A bigger trade war between the two largest economies will likely weaken the global economy. At the same time, experts are increasing the likelihood of a US recession. The developments on Wednesday increased market panic, sending investors to the safe-haven yen. Meanwhile, the greenback dropped.

Elsewhere, Bank of Japan governor Kazuo Ueda said the central bank would continue raising interest rates. However, he noted that this would depend on whether the economy performs. However, given Trump’s tariffs, there is a chance policymakers will pause to assess incoming data.

USD/JPY technical price analysis: Bears gear up for a new low below 145.01

USD/JPY Price Analysis: US-China Trade Tensions Ignite Risk-off
USD/JPY 4-hour chart

On the technical side, the USD/JPY price has dropped to retest the 145.01 support level. The price trades far below the 30-SMA, showing bears are in the lead. At the same time, the RSI trades near the oversold region, indicating solid bearish momentum.

-If you are interested in forex day trading then have a read of our guide to getting started-

The first time bears met the 145.01 support, they failed to break below. As a result, bulls returned to push the price higher. However, the bullish move was brief and it paused when the price met a solid resistance zone comprising the 30-SMA and the 148.02 level. The zone allowed bears to return and retest the 145.01 support.

A break below this level will make a lower low, continuing the downtrend. On the other hand, if the level holds firm, the price will consolidate before breaking below or bouncing higher.

Is There A Matcha Shortage?

By |2025-04-09T18:44:59+02:00April 9, 2025|Dietary Supplements News, News|0 Comments

It’s hard to miss the matcha madness: the trendy green drink has taken over social feeds and cafes all over the world as of late. Hailed for its health benefits, the green tea has soared in popularity over the past couple of years: UK chains ranging from Grind to Blank Street have reported a rise in sales – and the global market is predicted to grow to $2.9bn by 2028. But this surge in demand has prompted warnings of shortages, meaning our beloved morning matcha lattes could be at risk.

The Matcha Shortage, Explained

A type of green tea powder, matcha is primarily produced in Japan, particularly in the regions of Uji and Nishio. Over the past decade, production has tripled to 4,176 tonnes, yet supply is struggling to keep up with demand, according to Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Although people are drinking less matcha than before in Japan, consumption ‘reached a record high’ internationally, said Fumi Ueki, chief of the Leaf Brand Group – meaning nowadays, more than half of Japan’s matcha is exported.

Rumours of a shortage have been circulating since autumn 2024. Last year, for the first time, Kyoto tea companies including Ippodo and Marukyu announced purchase limits on the tea powder – despite companies working overtime to keep up. Meanwhile, fans have been reporting stores being totally sold out of matcha products.

The 2025 harvest is beginning this month, running until early June, which will temporarily restock supply. But if the trend continues to grow, experts believe Japan’s tea industry will have to make some major changes to keep up.

Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as just making more matcha. There are limitations with scaling up both growing the leaves and grinding them into powder. More land would be needed and the shrubs take years to mature, plus the machines used to grind the leaves are slow. Another factor is the shortage of farmers: according to data from MAFF, the number of matcha farmers has decreased from 53,000 in 2000 to 12,353 in 2020, which is in line with trends across the entire farming industry.

Unsplash

Why Is Matcha So Popular?

So what’s driving matcha interest? The health benefits are the biggest draw: the tea is rich in antioxidants, has stress-relieving properties and supports brain health. ‘We conducted a survey of foreign visitors to Japan at our department stores and found that they are interested in the health benefits of matcha,’ said Ueki. ‘It seems that people drink matcha not only because it tastes good but also because they expect it to be healthy. We believe that if we can widely promote the health benefits of matcha to the rest of the world, we can expect to see even greater global demand for matcha.’

Social media is also playing a key role: TikTok and Instagram are awash with videos of matcha, whether that’s recipe videos of ceremonial matcha rituals or snaps of wellness influencers clutching the green-hued drink. Celebrity endorsement is no doubt also ramping up demand, with A-list fans including Gwyneth Paltrow, Miranda Kerr, Rihanna and Kylie Jenner.

So what’s next? Well, the Japanese government is looking into how they could better support matcha farmers, and retailers are increasing the number of producers they source from to improve stock. And this January, the Global Japanese Tea Association posted a response to matcha shortage reports, encouraging fans not to panic. ‘There’s no need to worry: the spring harvest is just around the corner, and fresh matcha will soon be produced,’ adding: ‘we hope that tea drinkers come to appreciate the uniqueness and preciousness of this tea’.

I Still Live a Full and Active Life with Lupus

By |2025-04-09T17:47:01+02:00April 9, 2025|Fitness News, News|0 Comments

As told to Marnie Goodfriend

I’ve always been a thrill seeker. At age 22, I wanted to experience life to the fullest, and I enjoyed snowboarding, traveling — and even bungee jumping. I was healthy and had never had anything more than a cold until I started experiencing extreme fatigue, joint pain, and swelling in my legs, feet, hands and arms. Walking, resting or standing was difficult, and I could no longer grip things. After a few weeks, the pain became excruciating, so I went to my doctor to get to the bottom of it.

The physician barely looked at my body and didn’t run any tests. They gave me ibuprofen and told me to return if the pain persisted. Missing days from work was causing financial strain, and the pain just kept getting worse. The doctor I saw didn’t investigate the root cause of my condition. Instead, they upped my medications to heavy-duty painkillers. Two months later, I had no relief and was forcing myself to go to work.

One day, the pain became too much. I passed out and fell out of my desk chair at work. At the emergency room, I had no idea that my body was shutting down on me. They wanted to release me, but my mother and godmother demanded they keep me overnight and run tests. I was shivering with a 104-degree fever and having trouble breathing. They finally admitted me, and I was diagnosed with pericarditis (inflammation of the membrane that surrounds your heart) and pneumonia. And they ran an ANA test, which helps detect autoimmune disease. On my 23rd birthday, the ANA test came back positive. Based on that information and my symptoms, I was diagnosed with lupus.

I was isolated at the hospital for over a month on high doses of steroids while trying to process having a debilitating disease that can be life-threatening. A high school friend had lupus, and I had seen that it was horrible for her. I worried that I was going to die. It was difficult to wrap my head around how to live a new normal, make serious changes to my life that I had never even considered and grieve all the things I’d never get to do. It was a blessing that I had been with my company for years and could take a leave of absence. My friends and co-workers were a huge source of support, but my mother was and continues to be my rock. My first nephew was also born then, which gave me the strength to keep moving forward.

Once I was discharged, I moved in with my mom and went into a state of depression. All of the medication, pain, doctor’s visits and physical therapy were a lot to take in. Seeing that I was experiencing intense emotions, my rheumatologist encouraged me to see a therapist and connected me with a support group for lupus warriors. That’s where I found my people and learned from their experiences with the disease, which completely changed my perspective. My mom became my full-time caregiver without hesitation. I know it hasn’t been easy for her, and I carry some guilt and sadness that she’s had to take care of me as an adult when it should be the other way around.

For two years, I continued to work but took leaves of absence when my symptoms worsened. Then, my high school friend died from complications from lupus, and I developed lupus nephritis (kidney lupus). Without that support system, I would have believed that would also be my fate. Instead, I invited a few friends to participate in the Lupus Foundation of America’s (LFA) Lupus Walk in San Francisco. Being in a space where thousands of people know what you’re going through and you are supported by family, friends, coworkers, sponsors and volunteers was empowering. It inspired me to say, “I am not going to let lupus beat me,” so I became a volunteer for the organization, which helped me turn my pain into purpose.

Tracy at the Lupus Foundation of America’s Walk to End Lupus Now, San Francisco, October 2023

Lupus is an unpredictable, incurable disease, and at the time I was diagnosed, there weren’t medications specifically developed to treat it. I built a team of healthcare providers (HCPs), from nephrologists to nutritionists to therapists, to help me manage its many symptoms. I also learned to become my own health advocate and find new HCPs when others weren’t providing adequate care. Throughout this time, I continued working my full-time job but was laid off and became a contract worker when I was in my early 30s. Losing my company health insurance was a blow because I then had to pay most of my medical bills. At the same time, I had a lupus flare, which is when the disease attacks an organ or system in your body. That time, it was my gastrointestinal system, and I lost 100 pounds in less than six months. I was surviving on rice, water and oatmeal. The rapid weight loss caused muscle atrophy and extreme weakness.

I had another terrible flare during the pandemic. I had a new permanent job that I loved when I started feeling fatigue creep in. I couldn’t walk from my desk to the bathroom and always felt cold. I could barely lift my head at times and walking, sitting — everything — hurt it. My HCP’s office told me I needed to see my provider immediately because my weekly lab tests showed that I was in danger. I didn’t want to leave work, but they had also reached out to my father, who rushed me to the hospital. I had severe anemia. As a result, I received two blood transfusions and was hospitalized again for over a week. While recovering at home, I began to lose my ability to move and could no longer take care of myself. It was a fight for my life: I couldn’t bathe myself. I needed help getting to the bathroom. I lost my ability to walk and had to relearn through intense physical therapy. I’ve been unable to work and have been on disability ever since.

Lupus can be a very lonely disease. You don’t want people to pity you. I remember people asking me, “Are you going to die? Is lupus contagious? Is it like AIDS?” So, you minimize the disease because people’s words can hurt, and you don’t want to be a burden to your support system. Your pain may be at a 10, but you will tell someone you’re at a six. You may need help walking but don’t want to ask for it. Since lupus is primarily an invisible illness, people will say you don’t look sick, even when, internally, you’re on fire. This isolation is why I’m committed to making lupus more visible by working as an ambassador and advocate and speaking to pharmaceutical companies and legislators about funding and support. One of my greatest accomplishments was becoming LFA’s Bay Area Lupus Support Group facilitator, creating a safe space for lupus warriors to be educated about lupus, share information and resources, and be heard — because that was life-changing to me, especially early in my diagnosis.

Today, I know I can live a full life with lupus, and I want others to know that as well. You can still thrive and enjoy yourself. I’m passionate about activities like my book club, music concerts and food tours. While I had to mourn not becoming a mother, my three nephews are such a light in my life that I can pour so much love into them. Spending time with my family and being an auntie are the greatest joys in my life. My faith has been tested, but I pray and trust in God. It is the most important thing in my life that has kept me strong throughout my lupus journey.

Crude oil prices hit four-year low on recession fear, Trump’s tariffs, Saudi Arabia’s rate cut

By |2025-04-09T16:51:37+02:00April 9, 2025|Forex News, News|0 Comments

Crude oil prices: Following Donald Trump’s tariffs uncertainty and Saudi Arabia’s rate cuts, crude oil prices dropped to more than four years low on Wednesday. WTI crude oil price oscillates around the $57.70 mark, logging an intraday loss of nearly 3.20% during early morning deals in the Asian stock market. Brent futures lost $2.13, or 3.39%, to $60.69 a barrel as of 0108 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell $2.36, or 3.96%, to $57.22. Brent reached its lowest point in March 2021, and WTI reached its lowest in February 2021. Crude oil futures contract for April expiry on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) crashed 1.78% or ₹94 per barrel on Tuesday and closed at ₹5,199 per barrel.

Both benchmarks have tumbled over the five consecutive sessions since US President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs on most imports, sparking concerns that a global trade war would dent economic growth and hit fuel demand. The US will impose a 104% tariff on China from 12:01 a.m. EDT (0401 GMT) on Wednesday, a White House official said in a Tuesday briefing. The tariffs will increase by 50% after Beijing failed to lift its retaliatory tariffs on US goods by a noon deadline on Tuesday set by Trump.

According to commodity market experts, crude oil prices have crashed due to demand concerns fuelled by an escalating tariff war between the US and China and rate cuts announced by Saudi Arabia. They said that crude oil prices might continue to trade red and touch the $52 per barrel mark, whereas, in the domestic market, crude oil prices may test the ₹5,025 per barrel mark on MCX.

Crude oil prices drop on recession fear

Speaking on the reasons that are dragging crude oil prices across bourses, Anuj Gupta, Head — Commodity & Currency at HDFC Securities, said, “Oil prices fell sharply to an over four-year low in Asian trade on Wednesday as signs of a rapidly escalating US-China trade war sparked heightened concerns over a recession and weaker demand.” He said Saudi Arabia’s announcement to increase output and decrease oil prices is also a significant reason for nosediving crude oil prices.

“China’s aggressive retaliation diminishes the chances of a quick deal between the world’s two biggest economies, triggering mounting fears of global economic recession,” said Ye Lin, vice president of oil commodity markets at Rystad Energy.

“China’s 50,000 bpd to 100,000 bpd of oil demand growth is at risk if the trade war continues for longer. However, a stronger stimulus to boost domestic consumption could mitigate the losses,” she said.

Exacerbating oil’s decline was OPEC’s decision last week, which groups together the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies, including Russia, to hike output in May by 411,000 barrels per day. Analysts say this move is likely to push the market into surplus.

Goldman Sachs now forecasts that Brent and WTI could edge down to $62 and $58 per barrel by December 2025 and to $55 and $51 per barrel by December 2026.

Crude oil price forecast

Anuj Gupta of HDFC Securities said, “Crude oil prices are expected to remain under pressure. They may touch $52 per barrel in the international market, whereas they may test the ₹5,025 per barrel mark on the MCX. One should look at short positions on every rise as oil prices face hurdles at $62 per barrel in the international market and ₹5,380 per barrel on the MCX.”
