Going Global with Beloved Japanese Staples

By |2025-02-28T02:07:24+02:00February 28, 2025|Dietary Supplements News, News|0 Comments

By Cian O Neill and Daniel de Bomford

The vibrant green hue and earthy smooth taste of matcha has transcended Japanese borders to captivate global palates as a beloved and revered cultural export. With over a century of experience as a Japanese green tea producer, Harada Tea looks to the future of Japan-grown matcha, both to meet the domestic supply and export internationally. President Soichiro Harada says that while black tea has been considered the “standard” tea, green tea has begun to become popular. “Matcha powder is very easy to use without generating waste, and it is easily mixed with milk, confections or combination drinks,” Mr. Harada says. As green tea continues to be recognized for its health benefits and consumers become more health conscious, Mr. Harada sees that popularity increasing even further and Harada Tea is ready to capitalize on this growing demand.

Sourcing its tea from Japan, Harada Tea has been made more competitive with the weaker yen. Mr. Harada outlines the company’s policy: “Given the cost situation, we are not interested in going overseas for production since it is more cost-effective to rely on our tea cultivation in Japan.” Through its ability to source locally and its over 100 years of industry experience, Harada Tea maintains a strong relationship with growers in Japan and often advises them on best practices in a trend-driven market. “We get many consultation requests from small-scale tea leaf farmers. They want to know whether they should move toward the trend or keep their traditional way of producing,” Mr. Harada says. He explains that Harada Tea is cognizant of chasing trends as it often dilutes the uniqueness of local varieties.

While Harada Tea has its own branded products, the bulk of its business is as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM). Mr. Harada says that the company’s strength is its flexibility to support its clients and meet their unique specifications. “They may have specific requests about the taste, be it deeper, thinner or simpler,” he says. Mr. Harada explains that Harada Tea’s role in the market is to be a support for its customers: “We see ourselves as a behind-the-scenes company, not one that performs on stage. We provide the ingredients for the green tea that many people drink every day, but we are in the background, and we consider that an important role to play.” Furthermore, Harada Tea attained FSSC 22000 certification, an internationally recognized food safety certification—which Mr. Harada says is a rarity for tea manufacturers: “There are only a few companies that export tea which have this certification, so this gets us a lot of interest from overseas buyers.”

Harada Tea’s presence abroad presents a significant opportunity for expansion through e-commerce. Increasing its branded sales domestically would cause the company to compete directly with its OEM clients; however, the international market offers no such constraints. “We already have an OEM business overseas in a Singaporean supermarket. We provide OEM products, and we are providing ingredients for consumer drinks overseas as well,” Mr. Harada says.

In the United States, Harada Tea has partnered with Fujimart Corp., which operates the Maruichi supermarket chain. This partnership has created opportunities to develop products beyond tea—such as instant miso soup. “American people may not know, for example, how to make miso soup with dashi, so why not make it instant and just add hot water?” Mr. Harada says. Japanese products could have wide appeal in foreign markets and the company president notes that its new instant miso is vegan and halal. “In that vein, our idea is to provide traditional Japanese vegan or vegetarian food,” he adds. Harada Tea’s powdered miso is currently preparing for launch in the U.S., and what could follow are other products that capitalize on the popularity of Japanese cuisine. Mr. Harada outlines their future path: “There’s a traditional Japanese Buddhist vegetarian cuisine called shojin ryori, that we want to export.” He goes on to explain that products like soy sauce, which are not used as often, are another key target. “In order to ensure freshness, we want to make an instant soy sauce powder that can be prepared and used whenever needed,” he says.

A key reason to diversify the company’s offerings is the challenges that Japan’s aging population will bring to the country’s agricultural sector. Mr. Harada explains that the agriculture industry struggles with a particularly aged workforce and wages that lag behind other sectors. “One reason for that is that the mass media talks a lot about there being many people struggling with low wages and that an increase in the price of agricultural products that are staples is an economic burden,” he says. Mr. Harada believes that increased prices for staples would be unpopular in the Japanese market.

Domestic consumers are also becoming concerned about food packaging and its effect on the environment. Harada Tea has an environmentally friendly bag that uses less plastic and energy, but has found it challenging to get consumers to adopt it in the domestic market. “It’s a circular bag, but Japanese people prefer a more structured package, usually with a Ziploc-like closure, which places a bigger burden on the environment,” Mr. Harada says. He goes on to explain that packaging that meets global standards doesn’t sell well in Japan, so Harada Tea has created a custom solution to meet the unique sensibilities of the Japanese market: “We have to make our own customized machine to make packaging with more of a neat, clean design that is accepted by the Japanese market.” However, Mr. Harada says that consumers in Japan will often return cardboard packaging with minor scratches or dents and believes that the solution ultimately lies with reshaping Japanese expectations. “I think the key issue is not about potential environmentally friendly options but more about the Japanese mindset, which needs to be normalized to a global standard,” he says.

Food waste is another challenge that comes with the particularity of the Japanese mindset. Mr. Harada says that there are “unwritten rules” about shelf life: for example, he explains, a product with a one-year shelf life should not be sent from the factory with less than 70 percent of that period remaining. Likewise, if the product is already in the store, it shouldn’t be displayed on shelves without a discount. He points out that the government is currently having a discussion to change this unwritten rule; to increase the acceptable time window in which a product can leave the factory or remain on a shelf.

While the future is sure to be full of challenges, Harada Tea has seen dramatic shifts in the economic, political and social environment in its 107 years of business. Its strong connections to local suppliers and international partners ensures it will have the opportunity to continue to bring Japanese products into overseas markets. Mr. Harada explains the company’s future goals: “We want to be a window to introduce various new types of Japanese foods and condiments to the global market.”

The entire cryptocurrency market was painted red throughout the past week. The meme coin market followed a similar trend. Dogecoin (DOGE) witnessed major bloodshed during this period. The asset’s investors were seen drowning in losses. But the DOGE market was seen kickstarting a mid-week recovery phase. This further instilled hope in the community pushing investors to make ambitious bets for March.

Over the past 24 hours, Dogecoin recorded a much-needed uptick of 2.27%. At the time of writing, the meme coin was trading at $0.2111. But over the past seven days, the asset was down by nearly 17%. The asset’s monthly losses stand at 33%.

The latest drop has pushed Dogecoin much further from its all-time high. The meme coin hit a peak of $0.7376 back in 2021, about four years ago. Currently, DOGE is trading 71.34% below this high. The recent downfall of the market diminished hopes of DOGE reclaiming this peak.

Along with its price, Dogecoin’s network activity also took a hit. Recent data curated by Ali Martinez revealed that the number of active addresses on the network has decreased by 95%. The numbers went from 2.66 million in November to 130,282 today.

Natural Gas Price Forecast: Faces Deeper Pullback Amid Trendline Breakdown

By |2025-02-28T00:26:25+02:00February 28, 2025|Forex News, News|0 Comments

Failed Breakdown on Rally Above $4.07

It is possible that today’s breakdown fails and instead support is retained, leading a rally. A decisive breakout above today’s high of $4.07 would provide a sign of strength that could lead to higher prices. Subsequently, Tuesday’s high at $4.19 would need to be exceeded for additional bullish confirmation. There is a price range of potentially significant resistance around the two most recent swing highs from $4.37 to $4.48.

Deeper Retracement More Likely

Nonetheless, given today’s bearish signal, the more likely scenario to play out is a deeper bearish pullback. Although there is an interim potential support zone around the 50% retracement at $3.73, it also begins a range of potential support going down to a weekly low at $3.55. Both the 20-Day and 50-Day MAs are rising and may converge with the 50% zone prior to it being tested as support.

If that happens it may provide a more significant support area given the convergence of several indicators. Further, the 20-Day MA is poised to cross above the 50-Day line, providing another sign of strength. Since the 50-Day MA covers a larger trend than the 20-Day line, it is given priority.

It is also interesting to note that on the weekly chart (not shown) support for this week is around the 200-Week MA, now at $3.92. The low for the week is today’s low at $3.88.

Awaits Key US Data (Chart)

By |2025-02-28T00:08:07+02:00February 28, 2025|Forex News, News|0 Comments

  • In recent trading sessions, the USD/JPY currency pair has been attempting to recover from its four-month low losses, having fallen to the support level of 148.56.
  • However, the rebound gains did not exceed the 150.30 level before stabilizing around 149.30 at the time of writing the analysis.
  • The recent gains of the Japanese Yen have halted, as the US Dollar remained supported by escalating tariff threats from US President Donald Trump.
  • In the latest developments, Trump ordered an investigation into potential tariffs on copper imports to boost US production of the crucial metal, while also confirming that tariffs on Canada and Mexico will “go forward” once the one-month delay period ends next week.

Japanese Yen Remains Strong

Despite the decline, according to licensed trading platforms, the Japanese Yen remained near its highest levels in several months, supported by strong expectations that the Bank of Japan will continue to raise interest rates this year after bullish inflation surprises in the fourth quarter. Investors are now focusing on a series of key economic reports due out on Friday, including industrial production, retail sales and inflation data in Tokyo, which may provide further clarity on the Bank of Japan’s monetary policy outlook.

Trading Tips:

The dollar-yen pair breaks important support levels. So, be sure to exploit the performance to think about new buying opportunities, but without risk.

Japanese Stock Prices Stabilize

During today’s session, Thursday, and through stock trading platforms. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index rose 0.3% to close at 38,256, while the broader Topix index gained 0.73% to 2,736. Furthermore, the performance snapped a two-day losing streak and tracked gains in Wall Street’s main indexes. The moves came after US President Donald Trump raised hopes of another one-month pause in tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, while also proposing 25% tariffs on European cars and other goods.

Equity investors reacted to Nvidia’s earnings report, which highlighted strong demand for chips in the growing artificial intelligence sector. In Japan, shares of Seven & I Holdings plunged 11.7% after a proposed takeover by its founding family collapsed due to financing problems. Meanwhile, Itochu shares rose 4.3% after announcing that it decided not to continue participating in the Seven & I family purchase proposal.

USD/JPY Technical Analysis and Expectations Today:

According to recent trading, the general trend for the USD/JPY currency pair remains bearish. Stability below the 150.00 level will continue to motivate bears to control the trend and thus prepare for stronger losses, with the closest being 148.30 and 147.00, which in turn will move technical indicators towards strong oversold levels, and I see them as buying opportunities, but without risk. Conversely, and over the same time frame, a move above the resistance level of 152.60 will be important to break the current bearish outlook for the currency pair. The USD/JPY will be affected today by the announcement of a package of important US economic releases, led by the announcement of GDP growth and weekly jobless claims, along with the US durable goods orders reading.

Not to mention the signals that may come from global central bank officials about the future of tightening or not, and the path of US tariffs.

KAISER HEALTH CARE: With RFK Jr. in charge, supplement makers see chance to cash in | News

By |2025-02-28T00:06:10+02:00February 28, 2025|Dietary Supplements News, News|0 Comments

Last fall, before being named the senior U.S. health official, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said the Trump administration would liberate Americans from the FDA’s “aggressive suppression” of vitamins, dietary supplements, and other substances — ending the federal agency’s “war on public health,” as he put it.

In fact, the FDA can’t even require that supplements be effective before they are sold. When Congress, at the agency’s urging, last considered legislation to require makers of vitamins, herbal remedies, and other pills and potions to show proof of their safety and worth before marketing the products, it got more negative mail, phone calls, and telegrams than at any time since the Vietnam War, by some accounts. The backlash resulted in a 1994 law that enabled the dietary supplement industry to put its products on the market without testing and to tout unproven benefits, as long as the touting doesn’t include claims to treat or cure a disease. Annual industry revenues have grown from $4 billion to $70 billion since.

Cardano (ADA) Price Prediction for February 28

By |2025-02-28T00:00:53+02:00February 28, 2025|Crypto News, News|0 Comments

Today, February 27, 2025, ADA, the native token of the Cardano blockchain, appears to be confirming its bearish outlook due to recent whale activity and the bearish price action it has formed on the daily timeframe.

Cardano (ADA) Current Price Momentum

During the Asian trading session, ADA experienced an upside rally, seemingly attempting a recovery, but later plummeted, once again falling below the crucial support level of $0.65.

ADA is currently trading near $0.65 and has experienced a modest price drop of 0.85% in the past 24 hours. However, during the same period, its trading volume declined by 5.5%, indicating lower participation from traders and investors due to high price fluctuations in the asset.

ADA Price Action and Key Levels

According to expert technical analysis, ADA appears bearish as it has breached and closed a daily candle below the $0.65 mark.

Based on the current price action and historical patterns, if ADA remains below the $0.68 level and further closes a daily candle below the $0.63 mark, there is a strong possibility that the asset could drop by 30% to reach the $0.425 level in the future.

Due to the ongoing market decline, ADA’s price has dropped below the 200 Exponential Moving Average (EMA) on the daily timeframe, indicating that the asset is in a downtrend.

Whales Dump 170 Million ADA

In addition to ADA’s bearish outlook, a prominent crypto expert shared a post on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting that crypto whales have sold over 170 million ADA tokens in the past 96 hours, further supporting the bearish sentiment.

With this bearish outlook and overall weak market sentiment, ADA’s futures open interest (OI) continues to decline. Data from Coinglass shows that since the inauguration of U.S. pro-crypto President Donald Trump, ADA’s futures open interest has dropped significantly from $1.48 billion to $542.4 million, signaling declining trader confidence.

DeFi Renaissance – Why 2025 Will Be The Year of Decentralized And On-Chain Finance?

By |2025-02-27T22:37:03+02:00February 27, 2025|News, NFT News|0 Comments

Recent security breaches have rocked the crypto space, highlighting the fact that security will continue to need to be a key focus for providers.

In today’s issue, Marcin Kaźmierczak from Redstone Oracles breaks down why 2025 will be a critical year for DeFi and on-chain finance.

Then, Kevin Tam looks at the institutional adoption of bitcoin as seen from the recent 13-F filings and highlights key positions in Ask and Expert.

DeFi Renaissance – Why 2025 Will Be The Year of Decentralized And On-Chain Finance?

The recent hack of ByBit for nearly 401.000 ETH, valued at about $1.5 billion at that time, exposed that security will play a tremendous role in further crypto adoption. Can institutions expand on-chain after such an incident? Undoubtedly. It’s a matter of gradual adoption alongside ensuring top-notch security procedures.

Growing Adoption of Yield-Bearing Assets: Staking, Liquid Staking, Restaking and Liquid Restaking

In traditional finance, yield-generating assets are typically seen as stronger long-term investments than non-productive ones since they provide investors with ongoing cash flow and income. This perspective helps explain why some investors prefer ether over bitcoin. Ether is seen as more “productive” because it powers a network supporting a wide range of decentralized applications, benefiting from network effects. Beyond that, ether can be staked to earn consistent yield, aligning well with traditional valuation methods that prioritize ongoing dividends. The rising interest in staking, especially in the context of yield-generating assets, is evident in the growth of liquid staking, which enables frictionless and capital-efficient staking. This trend accelerated further in 2024 with the emergence of liquid restaking — for instance, ether.fi, a leading liquid restaking platform, saw explosive growth last year, with over $8 billion worth of ether staked through its rails.

The total amount of staked ether is expected to grow and play a significant role in DeFi. Around one-third of all ETH — or $90 billion — is staked, with further inflows anticipated from traditional financial institutions exploring staking. As staking becomes more accessible through FinTech applications, some investors may transition from custodial to non-custodial solutions as they gain a deeper understanding of blockchain technology.

Stablecoin Growth

Global demand for U.S. dollar exposure is immense, and stablecoins are the most efficient way to meet it. Stablecoins like USDC expand access to dollar-denominated wealth preservation and streamline value exchange. In 2024, venture capital investments have flowed into stablecoin projects, and we anticipate further development in this space. Regulatory frameworks like the EU’s MiCA have provided more explicit guidelines, further legitimizing stablecoins and likely driving higher adoption next year. Additionally, stablecoins are being integrated into traditional financial systems. For example, Visa has begun using USDC on networks like Solana to facilitate faster and more efficient payments. Additionally, PayPal entered the market with PUSD, and Stripe made one of crypto’s most significant acquisitions by purchasing Bridge to expand its stablecoin operations. In 2024, the total stablecoin market capitalization reached an all-time high, exceeding $200 billion dollars, and continuing to set new records in 2025.

Enhanced Interoperability and User-Friendly Non-Custodial Solutions

A key challenge in DeFi is moving funds across networks to access different investments. By 2025, significant progress is anticipated toward eliminating the necessity of bridging funds by introducing a “one-click solution.” This development should simplify the process for new DeFi users, likely attracting more participants to the space. Additionally, wallet providers are expected to improve the security of on-chain finance and streamline the onboarding process by eliminating cumbersome crypto-native setups. This shift, driven by innovations like the Account Abstraction movement, aims to make crypto more accessible and user-friendly for accessing on-chain finance. Currently, the irreversible nature of transactions and the prevalence of sophisticated scams deter many new users. However, improved security features should encourage more individuals to engage with decentralized finance.

Bitcoin Reaching $100K

While simply holding bitcoin on its native network isn’t inherently linked to on-chain finance, we’re witnessing a growing integration of bitcoin with decentralized financial ecosystems. For example, roughly 0.5% of bitcoin’s total supply through staking protocol Babylon is now locked to secure Proof-of-Stake (POS) chains. The increased acceptance of bitcoin by large banks and some governments is anticipated to create trickle-down effects, changing the public’s perception of digital currencies away from being seen purely as a speculative asset or illicit activities toward being a legitimate financial instrument, bringing new users on-chain.

Ask an Expert

Q: Can banks hold crypto with SEC’s SAB 122?

A: SEC’s Staff Accounting Bulletin 122 may encourage banks to integrate digital assets into the regulated financial system. By opening competition, banks can compete with centralized exchanges. Banks can offer services like bitcoin-backed lending, staking and custodial services, which treat digital assets more like traditional assets.

This is a positive move into a more flexible regulatory approach and balancing investor protections with the operational realities of financial institutions.

From institutional investment to mainstream recognition, this is another major shift in how the world views and interacts with digital assets.

Q: Which Institutions (e.g. sovereign wealth funds, pensions, companies, etc.) are buying bitcoin?

A: The accumulation by sovereign wealth funds, and pension funds is just getting started.

Mubadala Investment Company PJSC (the wealth fund owned by the government of Abu Dhabi) holds $436 million in one bitcoin ETF with overall assets under management of $302 billion. Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund (AIDA) manages a combined $1.7 trillion, indicating that their bitcoin investment is a relatively small portion of the overall portfolio.

Additionally, this past fall, Mubadala offered to acquire Canadian asset management firm CI Financial Corp. for $4.6 billion.

In the U.S., the State of Wisconsin Investment Board’s latest report shows its bitcoin ETF holdings have more than doubled from last quarter to over $321 million.

Pension & Sovereign Fundsk chart

Q: Banking on bitcoin – Which Canadian bank is leading the charge?

A: Recent Q4 2024 SEC filings reveal that Canadian Schedule 1 banks, institutional money managers, pension funds and sovereign wealth funds have disclosed significant bitcoin holdings (see charts).

Notably, Bank of Montreal now tops Canadian banks with $139 million in spot bitcoin ETF investments. And BMO’s bitcoin holdings went from zero to over $100 million in a single year.

Canadian banks / Bank of Montreal

Currently, in North America, there are approximately 1,623 large entities holding over $25.8 billion in bitcoin ETPs.

Euro feels weight of Trump tariff talks

By |2025-02-27T22:07:01+02:00February 27, 2025|Forex News, News|0 Comments

  • EUR/USD trades below 1.0500 after closing in the negative territory on Wednesday.
  • US President Trump plans to impose 25% tariff on EU imports of autos and other goods.
  • The technical outlook shows buyers’ reluctance in the near term.

EUR/USD lost its traction and posted losses on Wednesday. The pair stays on the back foot in the early European session on Thursday and trades below 1.0500.

Euro PRICE This week

The table below shows the percentage change of Euro (EUR) against listed major currencies this week. Euro was the weakest against the British Pound.

USD EUR GBP JPY CAD AUD NZD CHF
USD   -0.14% -0.28% 0.01% 0.78% 0.84% 0.91% -0.18%

CHF 0.18% 0.21% -0.03% 0.10% 0.94% 1.17% 1.06%

The heat map shows percentage changes of major currencies against each other. The base currency is picked from the left column, while the quote currency is picked from the top row. For example, if you pick the Euro from the left column and move along the horizontal line to the US Dollar, the percentage change displayed in the box will represent EUR (base)/USD (quote).

The negative shift seen in risk mood supported the US Dollar (USD) on Wednesday and caused EUR/USD to stretch lower. Additionally, US President Donald Trump said that they are planning to impose tariffs on European imports, further weighing on the pair. He noted that they will share details on EU tariffs soon, while adding that they are likely to be 25% on autos and some other goods.

In response, “the EU will react firmly and immediately against unjustified barriers to free and fair trade, including when tariffs are used to challenge legal and non-discriminatory policies,” the European Commission said.

In the second half of the day, the US Bureau of Economic Analysis will release the second estimate of the fourth-quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data. A downward revision could limit the USD’s gains with the immediate reaction and help EUR/USD find support. The US economic calendar will also feature the weekly Initial Jobless Claims data, which is forecast to edge higher to 221,000 in the week ending February 22, from 219,000 in the previous week.

Later in the American session, Trump is scheduled to hold a press conference following his meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

EUR/USD Technical Analysis

EUR/USD closed the last 4-hour candle below the 20-period and the 50-period Simple Moving Averages (SMA) and the Relative Strength Index (RSI) indicator declined slightly below 50, reflecting buyers’ reluctance.

On the downside, 1.0440 (Fibonacci 61.8% retracement of the latest downtrend) could be seen as first support before 1.0390-1.0400 (50-day SMA, Fibonacci 50% retracement) and 1.0350 (Fibonacci 38.2% retracement). Looking north, resistances could be spotted at 1.0500-1.0510 (round level, Fibonacci 78.6% retracement), 1.0535 (100-day SMA) and 1.0600 (beginning point of the downtrend).

Tariffs FAQs

Tariffs are customs duties levied on certain merchandise imports or a category of products. Tariffs are designed to help local producers and manufacturers be more competitive in the market by providing a price advantage over similar goods that can be imported. Tariffs are widely used as tools of protectionism, along with trade barriers and import quotas.

Although tariffs and taxes both generate government revenue to fund public goods and services, they have several distinctions. Tariffs are prepaid at the port of entry, while taxes are paid at the time of purchase. Taxes are imposed on individual taxpayers and businesses, while tariffs are paid by importers.

There are two schools of thought among economists regarding the usage of tariffs. While some argue that tariffs are necessary to protect domestic industries and address trade imbalances, others see them as a harmful tool that could potentially drive prices higher over the long term and lead to a damaging trade war by encouraging tit-for-tat tariffs.

During the run-up to the presidential election in November 2024, Donald Trump made it clear that he intends to use tariffs to support the US economy and American producers. In 2024, Mexico, China and Canada accounted for 42% of total US imports. In this period, Mexico stood out as the top exporter with $466.6 billion, according to the US Census Bureau. Hence, Trump wants to focus on these three nations when imposing tariffs. He also plans to use the revenue generated through tariffs to lower personal income taxes.

Which Is the Better Omega-3 Source?

By |2025-02-27T22:05:16+02:00February 27, 2025|Dietary Supplements News, News|0 Comments

Krill oil is a fish oil alternative made from tiny shrimp-like crustaceans, a dietary staple for Antarctic wildlife such as whales and birds. This oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which the body may absorb more efficiently than those found in fish oil.

Both krill and fish oil supplements have two types of omega-3 fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). They’ve been shown to support heart health and reduce inflammation.

However, krill oil may not be a magic bullet for heart health. A 2023 meta-analysis found that krill oil made no impact on blood pressure or heart disease risk factors.

“We need more studies because even omega-3s have fallen flat on some of the things we thought they could do. In some of the studies, just eating fish has shown to have better outcomes than taking the fish oil,” Judy Simon, MS, RD, CD, a clinical dietitian nutritionist at the UW Medical Center who was not involved in the study, told Verywell.

What Does Krill Oil Really Do?

Besides enhanced omega-3 absorption, krill oil is touted for its antioxidant content. Unlike fish oil, krill oil gets its red color from the antioxidant astaxanthin, which can support eye health and reduce inflammation. The antioxidant is also found in salmon, shrimp, and algae.

Simon said one study in 2017 suggested that krill oil can reduce dry eye symptoms better than fish oil because of astaxanthin.

An older study from 2003 found that krill oil might help people manage premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms better than fish oil, potentially due to its anti-inflammatory effect.

However, you can get similar relief from PMS symptoms or menstrual cramps by adjusting your overall diet, according to Sue-Ellen Anderson-Haynes, MS, RDN, CDCES, a registered dietitian based in Boston.

Are Krill Oil Supplements Worth the Price?

Antarctic krill oil is typically three to four times more expensive than fish oil because of harvesting costs. Krill fishing requires massive vessels—described as “floating krill oil factories”—that can traverse the Drake Passage, one of the most dangerous ocean crossings in the world.

“The price is much higher, and I don’t think they’ve proven a cost-benefit for it,” Simon said.

Omega-3s in krill oil and fish oil may increase the risk of bleeding, especially if taken alongside a blood-thinning medication. Simon added that krill oil can sometimes cause gastrointestinal symptoms, such as bloating, nausea, diarrhea, gas, and heartburn. While krill oil is well-tolerated and safe for many people, it may not suit people who are allergic to shellfish.

Most nutrition experts and public health organizations recommend eating a varied diet that contains omega-3-rich foods instead of relying on supplements.

Krill hasn’t gained popularity in American restaurants yet, but it’s used in making fermented shrimp paste in Asia, and you can buy canned krill online. Anderson-Haynes said other types of seafood and fish, seaweed, walnuts, flax seeds, or chia seeds are good dietary sources of omega-3s.

“You’re getting other nutrients and antioxidant activities from the foods,” Anderson-Haynes added. “A food-first approach is best.”

What This Means For You

Krill oil contains omega-3s and the antioxidant astaxanthin. Despite its potential benefits for heart health and conditions like PMS, there’s not enough evidence to prove its impact on blood pressure or heart disease factors.
