Omega-3s and Omega-6s May Reduce Overall Cancer Risk, Study Finds

By |2024-11-24T03:40:30+02:00November 24, 2024|Dietary Supplements News, News|0 Comments

Fish oil supplements may help lower the overall risk of developing cancer, according to a recent study published in the International Journal of Cancer.

Researchers in the United Kingdom analyzed data from over 250,000 people who took blood tests to measure levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. The participants were then monitored for a little more than a decade.

Higher levels of omega-3 and omega-6 were associated with reduced overall risk of cancer. While the individual risk reduction seems modest, small improvements across large populations could translate to significant health benefits.

People who had higher levels of omega-3s had lower rates of colon, stomach, and lung cancer, in addition to lower rates of other digestive tract cancers, when followed up after a decade, according to Yuchen Zhang, lead author of the study and a doctoral student in the College of Public Health at the University of Georgia.

High omega-6 levels led to lower rates of 14 different cancers, including brain, malignant melanoma, and bladder.

In the study, the benefits of high levels of fatty acids were independent of risk factors like body mass index (BMI), alcohol use, and physical activity.

But some experts say more research is still needed, especially since the study found a slight increase in prostate cancer among men who had higher levels of omega-6.

“This is an interesting study with promising findings,” Marissa Shams-White, PhD, MPH, senior principal scientist for population science at the American Cancer Society, told Verywell. “The study had many strengths, including that it was in a very large population. However, this is only one study, and findings may not be generalizable to all adults.”

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are important sources of dietary fats. While omega-3s can promote heart and brain health and reduce inflammation, omega-6s can provide energy and support cellular health.

Shams-White explained that observational studies such as this one examine associations between nutrients and health outcomes, but they cannot establish causation that proves fatty acid intake changes cancer risk.

“There is currently inconsistent evidence that fish oil supplements, and any other dietary supplements, may affect cancer risk,” Shams-White said. “Taking supplements may impact health differently than consuming nutrients through foods in your diet.”

The current cancer prevention guidelines recommend consuming nutrients through diet but not taking dietary supplements for cancer prevention, she added.

“Dietary sources are rich in other nutrients and vitamins that may interact to together impact health. As an example, fish are not only great sources of omega-3s, but they can also be good sources of protein, vitamin D, and B vitamins like selenium and potassium,” Shams-White said.

Research suggests that most Americans consume about 10 times more omega-6s than omega-3s, according to Amy Bragagnini, MS, RD, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and clinical oncology dietitian at Trinity Health Lacks Cancer Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Foods that are rich in omega-3s include fatty fish like salmon and sardines, chia seeds, flax seeds, walnuts, and spinach. Omega-6 fats mainly come from vegetable oils like sunflower oil and safflower oil.

“I would encourage people to aim to get more omega-3 fatty acids from food when they can,” Bragagnini told Verywell, adding that it’s best to increase omega-3 intake instead of reducing omega-6s in your diet.

Adults should aim to consume a total of 8 ounces of fish per week, according to the U.S. dietary guidelines.

Bragagnini noted that if her patients struggle to add omega-3s to their diet, then she’d advise them to consult a doctor about taking a supplement.

What This Means For You

Adding omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to your diet may have health benefits, including a slightly lower risk of some cancers. Aim to incorporate foods like fatty fish, chia seeds, walnuts, and vegetable oils into your meals for balanced nutrition. While supplements are an option if dietary intake is challenging, current guidelines suggest focusing on whole foods for a broader range of nutrients.

What is Hon-Gyokuro, one of the rarest types of Japanese green tea in the world?

By |2024-11-24T01:39:12+02:00November 24, 2024|Dietary Supplements News, News|0 Comments

I must confess, I am not exactly a tea connoisseur. The only type of green tea I am familiar with is the bottled Pokka Jasmine Green Tea or the standard variety served in most sushi restaurants. So, when TWG Tea invited me to a tasting of Hon-Gyokuro, one of the rarest Japanese green teas in the world, it felt like I had discovered a whole new world of flavours.

What exactly is Hon-Gyokuro? Gyokuro is a premium, high-quality variety of Japanese green tea. The name “Gyokuro” translates to “jade dew”.  The prefix of “hon”, which translates to “authentic”, is only given to Gyokuro that has been grown in the traditional way by a master artisan.

“Hon-Gyokuro is made by a traditional cultivation method,” shared Reiko Heda, Japan’s business development director at TWG Tea. “The big difference between regular Gyokuro and Hon-Gyokuro is the material used to cover the tea plantation. For regular Gyokuro, they use a black synthetic fabric. But for Hon-Gyokuro, it is covered by a natural material called ‘komo’ in Japanese, which is made from rice straw.”

TWG Tea is the only global tea brand to offer Hon-Gyokuro outside of Japan, the company said. It has a longstanding partnership with a tea plantation in Okabe, Shizuoka Prefecture, Central Japan’s most famous region for tea. Here, the altitude, climate and terroir create the perfect natural conditions for tea growing and harvesting.

XRP Price To $28: Wave Analysis Reveals When It Will Reach Double-Digits

By |2024-11-24T01:34:46+02:00November 24, 2024|Crypto News, News|0 Comments

Crypto analyst Behdark has predicted that the XRP price can reach $28. This prediction follows his Elliot Wave theory analysis, which also showed when the crypto will reach this double-digit price target.

When XRP Price Will Reach Double Digits

In a TradingView post, Behdark’s Elliot Wave theory analysis showed that the XRP price can reach double digits by 2026. The analyst’s accompanying chart showed that the first double digits target for XRP will be $15, after which the crypto could eventually rally to $28. Behdark also provided more insights into XRP’s current price action and why this rally could happen.

Source: X

First, the analyst mentioned that the XRP price looks to be currently within a running triangle. In line with this, Behdark remarked that wave D might complete its movement by hunting the all-time high (ATH) at $3.84. He mentioned that there could be a price correction for wave E afterward.

Once that XRP price correction happens, Behdrak predicts the next move will be the post-pattern movement targeting a level above $15. This is where the price target of $28 comes into the picture, as the analyst’s accompanying chart shows it is a feasible target for the crypto, although it might not happen in this market cycle.

An XRP price rally to $28 would mean that the crypto would have a market cap of $2.8 trillion. However, Behdrak suggested that this was still feasible. He noted that his focus was on chart analysis and not fundamentals, even though fundamentals are reflected in the chart itself.

Meanwhile, the analyst told market participants that if a clear and identifiable pattern emerges when the XRP price reaches wave E of the triangle, they could position themselves for the main move to double digits.

A Confirmation Of This Double Digit Target

Crypto analyst Dark Defender also recently shared an Elliot Wave theory analysis, which showed that the XRP price could indeed reach double digits. Specifically, the analyst’s accompanying chart showed that XRP could rally as high as $18 when the wave 5 impulsive move occurs.

Source: X

Interestingly, unlike Behdark’s chart, which showed that the rally to double digits would happen in 2026, Dark Defender’s chart showed that the rally to $18 could happen as early as mid-2025. Meanwhile, the analyst said that the XRP price is currently in the third wave, with the crypto expected to rally to $5 when this next impulsive move occurs.

Afterward, the XRP price is expected to witness a corrective move that will cause it to drop to as low as $4. The next impulsive move after this could send XRP to the $18 target.

At the time of writing, the XRP price is trading at around $1.55, up over 10% in the last 24 hours, according to data from CoinMarketCap.

About Lemme Grow Hair Growth Supplement by Kourtney Kardashian

By |2024-11-23T23:38:24+02:00November 23, 2024|Dietary Supplements News, News|0 Comments

In today’s market, hair supplements are abundant. From general hair, skin and nails supplements to hair-growth-specific supplements, supporting hair health is easier and more accessible than ever. One of the leading wellness supplement brands at the moment, Lemme, founded by Kourtney Kardashian, has officially entered the hair growth space with their Lemme Grow Hair Growth and Anti-Shedding supplement. Keep reading for more on the launch, where to buy and how Lemme Grow hair supplement works.

What causes hair loss in women?

Many, many factors can unfortunately contribute to hair loss. There’s no “one size fits all”—especially since we all live different lifestyles and live in different environments, both of which can impact hair health.

However, there are a few causes of hair loss that are common. For starters, hormones can play a big part in hair shedding. As we age and start to enter perimenopause or menopause, many women notice their hair starting to thin (even when they never dealt with hair loss in the past). This happens due to a decrease in estrogen levels. And aside from menopause, genetics can play a part in waning estrogen levels, and hair loss in general.

Ekaterina Demidova/Getty

Other causes of hair loss can range from genetics to nutrient deficiencies like low vitamin D or zinc to thyroid issues or even the hair products and/or tools you’re using. Excessive heat (especially without applying heat protectant) and damaging hairstyles can wreak havoc on hair.

About Lemme Grow hair growth supplement

Kourtney Kardashian founded her wellness brand, Lemme, in 2022 after spending five years working with doctors and scientists researching to create vitamins and supplements that are good for you and taste good (and lemme tell you, they taste amazing).

Lemme Grow launched earlier this month and joined the lineup of many other fan-favorite Lemme supplements including Lemme Chill, Lemme Smooth and Lemme Sleep. It claims to reduce hair shedding in 30 days and promote hair growth in 12 weeks with vitamins, minerals and a clinically-studied Keratin complex.

About Lemme Grow Hair Growth Supplement by Kourtney Kardashian
Lemme

More specifically, Lemme Grow is made with vitamin C, niacinamide, vitamin B6 and pantothenic acid, which all have antioxidant properties, support collagen production and help deliver oxygen to hair follicles. It’s also packed with minerals, like copper and zinc, essential nutrients for healthy hair. Additionally, Lemme Grow is formulated with L-Cysteine, a natural amino acid that makes protein for stronger strands, and bamboo silica to help promote collagen and glycosaminoglycan (which is part of the make up of the dermis layer of the skin and helps with wrinkle prevention and scar repair) production. The star of the show, however, is Cynatine HNS, a form of keratin that promotes hair growth in 12 weeks, reduces shedding and increases shine (plus, it even helps nails). It also is said to improve hair’s amino acid makeup for stronger, healthier hair.

“Regarding Lemma Grow hair, the supplements contain a nice mix of vitamins/antioxidants plus zinc. This can be beneficial if you are struggling with nutritional challenges,” says trichologist Kerry E. Yates. “However, these vitamins are not necessarily a cure-all for thinning hair challenges. In addition, I appreciate that they conducted a consumer usage study, but 30 people do not make a proper study. Plus, the study is based on consumer perception, not actual measurable facts. Long story short, this is a good ‘added’ vitamin, but I cannot say definitively that it will grow your hair,” advises Yates.

A unique aspect of Lemme Grow’s formulation is that it’s biotin-free, which many other hair supplement brands include in their formulas. While biotin can be great for promoting hair growth, some feel it can cause issues in their skin (although there is minimal scientific evidence to back this claim). Lemme Grow is biotin-free to support sensitive skin and hair.

Here’s Why XRP Price Will Hit $20

By |2024-11-23T21:31:04+02:00November 23, 2024|Crypto News, News|0 Comments

XRP price has remained within an upward trading range in recent weeks, reflecting strong bullish sentiment for the cryptocurrency. The recent price surge aligns with a broader market rally, signaling growing momentum in XRP’s favor. Analysts maintain a positive outlook, with some forecasting a potential breakout that could drive XRP to $20 levels.

Why XRP Price Will Trigger Exponential Rally to $20

XRP price has successfully ended a downtrend that persisted since 2018, signaling potential explosive price movements ahead. Analysts highlight this breakthrough as a significant moment, with Fibonacci extension levels indicating ambitious price targets.

Based on the analysis, the first target lies at the 161.8% Fibonacci extension level, marking $1.88. Following this, higher projections include the 261.8% level at $5.85 and the 361.8% extension at $18.22. This suggests a potential surge in XRP’s valuation as it enters uncharted territory.

3 Reasons Why Ripple Will Hit $20

Gary Gensler, Chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), has announced plans to resign effective January 20, 2025, the day after President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Gensler, who has served since April 2021, will leave the SEC entirely. Aggressive enforcement has defined his leadership, particularly in the cryptocurrency sector, drawing significant attention from industry stakeholders.

Ripple’s potential to reach $20 has fueled excitement, especially with speculation about the next SEC Chair. Discussions on social media highlight Brian Brooks, former Binance CEO, and a Hedera Foundation board member, as a leading candidate to replace Gary Gensler.

Notably, Brooks is a strong advocate for blockchain innovation, including XRP. His appointment could signal regulatory shifts favoring cryptocurrencies. This possibility has driven optimism in the Ripple community, linking regulatory clarity with XRP’s market performance.

Ripple’s XRP has experienced a remarkable rally, surging 40% in the past week and 180% over the month. The cryptocurrency’s price climbed from $0.60 to over $1, signaling strong bullish momentum. This upward trend aligns with Bitcoin’s rise above $98,000, which has fueled optimism across the crypto market.

If the bullish pressure mounts, more pressure could propel top altcoin to new heights, potentially reaching $20 in this cycle. Market sentiment remains optimistic as Ripple’s consistent growth positions it as a key player in the ongoing crypto surge. At the time of writing, the price of XRP is trading at $1.48, with a strong surge of 2% in the past 24-hours.

XRP’s bullish momentum, regulatory optimism, and market alignment signal a potential surge to $20. With key resistance levels broken and favorable developments ahead, XRP is well-positioned for exponential growth, cementing its role in the evolving crypto landscape.

Green Tea Could Help Combat Effects Of Stress And High-Fat Foods, Study Suggests

By |2024-11-23T19:36:41+02:00November 23, 2024|Dietary Supplements News, News|0 Comments

Cocoa or green tea could counter the negative effects of high-fat food which tend to worsen during times of stress, a new study has found. Researchers said that food choices made while feeling stressed can influence how stress impacts heart health. The team from the University of Birmingham, UK, found that while high-fat foods can negatively affect the function of blood vessels and oxygen reaching the brain, flavanol-rich cocoa and green tea can protect vascular function (vessels) during periods of everyday stress.

“We took a group of young healthy adults and gave them two butter croissants with 10 grams salted butter, 1.5 slices of cheddar cheese and 250 millilitres whole milk as breakfast and either a high-flavanol cocoa or a low-flavanol cocoa drink,” first author Rosalind Baynham, University of Birmingham, explained. “Following (an eight-minute-long) rest period, we asked the participants to complete a mental maths test which increased in speed for eight minutes, alerting them when they got an answer wrong,” Baynham said.

During the resting period and the maths test, blood flow in the forearm, cardiovascular activity and oxygen reaching the brain’s prefrontal cortex were measured. “We also measured vascular function using Brachial Flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), which is a prognostic measure for future risk of cardiovascular disease. This stress task induced significant increases in heart rate and blood pressure, similar to the stress you may encounter in daily life,” Baynham said.

The team found that consuming fatty foods with the low-flavanol drink when mentally stressed reduced vascular function and lasted up to 90 minutes after the stressful event was over. The findings also showed that the high-in-flavanols cocoa drink was effective at preventing the decline in vascular function following stress and fat consumption. The researchers had previously found that high-fat foods weakened the delivery of oxygen to the brain, during stress.

However, cocoa flavanols did not improve oxygen levels in the brain or impact one’s mood, the researchers said. “This research shows that drinking or eating a food high in flavanols can be used as a strategy to mitigate some of the impact of poorer food choices on the vascular system. This can help us make more informed decisions about what we eat and drink during stressful periods,” said author Catarina Rendeiro, an assistant professor of nutritional sciences at the University of Birmingham.

Dog-themed cryptocurrency Dogecoin (DOGE) has surged by nearly 25% in the last 24 hours, reaching intraday highs of $0.4807 in Saturday’s trading session.

Dogecoin hit its highest price this year, as altcoins see massive gains as Bitcoin approaches the $100,000 milestone.

In a recent tweet, Ali Martinez, a crypto analyst, shared his bullish outlook on Dogecoin saying, “Dogecoin DOGE is in the middle of a bullish breakout to $0.82.”

Ali shared a chart of Dogecoin, indicating a triangle pattern with a potential breakout target of $0.82.

This prediction has fueled further optimism about the potential for DOGE to reach new all-time highs. At current levels, Dogecoin would need to increase by nearly 42% to reach the $0.82 target.

Dogecoin has nevertheless achieved significant increases in the week and month, with CoinGecko data indicating that it has increased by 27% and 245% in the last seven and thirty days.

Dogecoin surges on market optimism

Dogecoin has been rising over the last three days, with today’s increase being the highest. Dogecoin rose from lows of $0.4 to highs of $0.48, a level not seen since May 2021, producing a giant green candle in today’s trading session.

The dog coin’s run had earlier stalled following its ascent to highs of $0.439, but DOGE began to rise again from lows of $0.369 on Nov. 21.

The upward-sloping moving averages and the RSI in the overbought zone signal a buyer edge. If bulls push the price above $0.48, Dogecoin might rise to $0.50, then $0.59. A further upward rise might approach the current all-time highs of $0.73 and $0.82.

In the event of declines, immediate support is envisaged around $0.33 ahead of $0.29 and $0.25.

STAT readers respond on supplements and drug innovation

The story

“The progressive campaign against biomedical innovation,” by Vrushab Gowda and Brian J. Miller

It is disappointing when scholars from reputable academic institutions enter a fact-free zone to make policy arguments. Sadly, this is exactly the line of argument that Gowda and Miller have recently pursued. They accuse the Biden-Harris administration of having “both stifled innovation and made it harder for drugs to reach patients.” I believe that it is worth looking beyond the tired pharma talking points and made-up simulation numbers to what is happening on the ground.

Let’s begin with direct investments in research and development. From 2021 through 2023, the NIH budget increased 13.9%. That compares well to the three pre-pandemic years that saw a 14.5% rise. In addition, the Biden-Harris administration oversaw the creation of ARPA-H that began with a $1 billion investment that has increased to $2.5 billion in 2024. The National Science Foundation budget has grown 15.2% under the Biden-Harris administration. That compares to 10.8% in the prior administration.

Gowda and Miller next rail against the new approach to establishing negotiated prices for a limited set of single source drugs that have been exclusively on the market for at least nine to 13 years. They refer to Medicare drug “administered” prices. To the extent that they actually mean the limited number of drugs that will have negotiated prices, it seems that the real objection is that the authors have a preference for prices administered by monopolists that have evaded competition to prices administered through a negotiation process.

As proof of the problems created by these administered prices, they put great weight on a “early modeling study” from the University of Chicago while ignoring the estimates by the Congressional Budget Office and other scholars. Two years into a period that was viewed by some as the start of a “nuclear winter” for pharmaceutical R&D, it may be worth examining the experience to date in light of the dire predictions that the authors appear to subscribe to. Industry R&D spending has continued to grow and is expected to reach $204 billion for the full year 2024. My colleagues and I have examined merger and acquisition activities, another investment mechanism for bringing new products to market, and found continued high levels of activities including those involving early-stage products and those developing small molecule drugs. Our results are consistent with findings by the Congressional Budget Office. These results have also been confirmed in Wall Street analyst reports.

Especially telling is commentary in earnings calls by large pharmaceutical companies that run counter to the claims made by Gowda and Miller. For example, Merck stated the following:

“In summary, our science-led strategy is delivering compelling proof points that we are creating a sustainable innovation engine that with continued clinical success will lead to a more diversified portfolio of growth drivers over the next decade and beyond,” (Merck Q1 earnings call).

In fact, contrary to the authors’ claims it appears some firms are redoubling investments in R&D to compensate for any revenue reduction stemming from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

“So I think it’s important to recognize that while IRA has an impact in the middle of the decade, we feel very good about being able to more than compensate for that with a very young and attractive growth profile coming from our growth portfolio and the pipeline.” (BMS Q1 Earnings call)

Examining the facts on the ground offers a different view of the industry and R&D policy than those asserted by Gowder and Miller based on ideology in the absence of facts.

— Richard G. Frank, the Brookings Institution

The story

“A new Trump administration will further loosen already-lax rules on supplements,” by S. Bryn Austin and Amanda Raffoul

S. Bryn Austin and Amanda Raffoul mischaracterized the dietary supplement industry as unregulated and reckless. As Committee for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) president, I must correct this misinformation and highlight the industry’s strong commitment to safety, consumer trust, and regulatory compliance. Dietary supplements are regulated under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), with FDA oversight including Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), adverse event reporting, and labeling standards. CRN has long supported strengthening this framework by advocating for tools like a federal supplement registry and increased FDA resources to combat illicit products.

The unsubstantiated claim that supplements contribute to eating disorders lacks evidence. CRN’s review of studies finds no causal link, and Austin’s own research fails to support her assertions. Broader factors—such as societal pressures and untreated mental health issues—are the real drivers, yet the authors unfairly scapegoat the supplement industry. The alarmism extends to misrepresentations about FDA enforcement and industry-funded research. The FDA routinely takes action against illegal products, and industry-supported studies meet rigorous standards, contrary to the dismissive “pseudoscience” label. State proposals to restrict access to weight management and muscle-building supplements are misguided. Such policies penalize responsible adults and stigmatize safe, FDA-compliant products. Vague legislative definitions risk overreach, impacting everyday products like multivitamins. Alarmist comparisons to “Big Tobacco” or “Big Sugar” only undermine informed discussions about supplements.

The dietary supplement industry prioritizes safety through science-backed claims, third-party certifications, and consumer education. Rather than fearmongering, collaboration among regulators, researchers, and health advocates is key to improving public health. The industry welcomes scrutiny and seeks balanced dialogue — not unfounded attacks that mislead consumers and ignore societal challenges. It’s time to focus on facts, not fear.

— Steve Mister, Council for Responsible Nutrition
