Rejection at Resistance

The recent swing back from $3,886 swing low last week found resistance near the 10-day average, resulting in rejection over three days. Today’s high of $4,006 made another attempt but instead resulted in the second consecutive day of lower daily highs and lows. The behavior formed a small bear flag pattern and a breakdown triggered today. If the breakdown continues lower, prices will likely be challenged before sustainable support is found.

Dynamic Resistance Confirmed

The behavior of gold near the 10-day average resistance confirmed underlying selling pressure as it fell below the 20-day average, reflecting bearish momentum. Once prior dynamic support becomes resistance the bear trend (pullback) is indicating it may be ready to continue. That was confirmed today with the breakdown from the bear flag. A drop below $3,915 will further confirm selling pressure and put the $3,886 at risk of failing as support.

Downside Targets

An initial downside target is highlighted by the confluence of two indicators generating a potential support zone around $3,846 to $3,844 consisting of a 50% retracement and 50-day average, respectively. In addition, there was a short three-day resistance zone during gold’s rise that also marks a similar potential support area. If that zone fails to hold then the 61.8% Fibonacci retracement at $3,720, along with the centerline of a rising trend channel, becomes the lower target.

Long-Term Support

Since the bull trend accelerated in late August and reclaimed the 50-day average it has not been approached as support. This would be the first time that this happens and therefore support is expected to be seen. However, keep in mind that the 50-day line is rising and therefore it could be above the 50% retracement before it is reached.

Outlook

Below $3,915 targets $3,846 but today’s bearish signal confirms on a daily close below the lower boundary line of the flag. The bear flag and 10-day resistance favor sellers. Watch the 50-day convergence zone — holding keeps the trend intact, while a break risks the 61.8% retracement. Today’s action leans bearish until $4,006 clears – today’s high.

The Euro to Dollar (EUR/USD) exchange rate fell to fresh three-month lows below 1.1500 on Tuesday, as a strong US Dollar extended its advance amid renewed risk aversion and persistent concerns over tightening global liquidity.

The dollar has maintained a firm tone against the Pound and Euro in global markets with the Euro to Dollar (EUR/USD) exchange rate dipping to fresh 3-month lows below the 1.1500 level.

There has been a significant setback for equities which hampered the Euro to some extent.

There are also concerns over tighter liquidity conditions which will continue to support the US currency; According to Credit Agricole; “Persistent USD liquidity premium could add to the costs of short-USD hedges and its rate advantage across the board in the near term.”

According to UoB further losses may be limited; “While positive divergence is still apparent, EUR may just have enough momentum to test 1.1490 today before the risk of a recovery increases.”

It added; “We remain optimistic on a rally into year-end to 1.18-1.20, but until US data gives the go-ahead for a rebound, there aren’t other obvious bullish drivers for EUR/USD.”

Overall interest rate trends will remain a key influence, but there is still a high degree of uncertainty over the US outlook.

According to Scotiabank; “It is probably helping the USD and not helping risk sentiment that a cloud of uncertainty has descended over the Fed policy outlook.”

The latest US data suggested that manufacturing remained in contraction territory for October.

ING commented; “The ISM manufacturing index suggests that the US industrial sector remains under pressure from weak growth and tariff-related uncertainty. The one consolation is that inflation pressures appear to be easing, but the Fed hawks will want to see broader evidence of this before backing a December rate cut.”

The latest ADP private payrolls data is due on Wednesday with the data watched closely after a reported payrolls decline of 32,000 last month. Consensus forecasts are for an October increase of around 30,000.

ING commented; “Our short-term fair value model is now showing a 1% undervaluation, and with positioning now much more balanced, the pair can enjoy faster rallies on poor US jobs market news.”

Commerzbank’s FX analyst Michael Pfister noted the divisions within the central bank, but added; “The more dovish members seem to sense an opportunity to take a more dominant stance at the moment.”

According to Pfister; “Therefore, we are less certain than the market that interest rate cuts have really become less likely in the coming year after Jerome Powell’s rather hawkish press conference last week, and whether the USD’s strength in recent weeks is really justified.”

It’s not a substitute for medical treatment, but making tea part of your routine can be a small but effective step toward better heart health.

Hibiscus tea is made from the dried petals of the hibiscus flower. It’s caffeine-free and has a bright, tart flavor.

Hibiscus gets its deep red color from anthocyanins, the same antioxidant compounds found in berries and other red or purple fruits. These antioxidants may support the health of your blood vessels and promote their ability to relax, which in turn may help reduce blood pressure.

Several studies suggest that hibiscus tea can have real benefits for people with high blood pressure. In one study, people who drank two cups of hibiscus tea daily saw significant drops in both their top (systolic) and bottom (diastolic) blood pressure readings compared to a placebo group.

A review of multiple studies also found that hibiscus tea consistently lowered systolic blood pressure, with a smaller effect on diastolic pressure.

Green, black, and oolong teas come from the same Camellia sinensis plant, but they are processed differently. Oxidation, or exposure to oxygen after harvesting, influences a tea’s flavor, color, and nutrients. Green tea is not oxidized, preserving its mild flavor and antioxidant compounds.

One of the key antioxidants in green tea, catechins, may help keep blood vessels flexible and promote better circulation. These compounds also have anti-inflammatory effects that support overall cardiovascular health.

Research suggests that regularly drinking green tea may have a small but meaningful effect on blood pressure. People who consume it consistently, especially those with borderline high blood pressure or other cardiovascular risks, see reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings.

Most studies suggest that two to four cups of green tea a day are enough to see benefits. Because green tea contains caffeine, people who are sensitive may prefer smaller amounts or a decaffeinated option.

Chamomile tea is best known for helping you relax and unwind, but it may also support healthy blood pressure. Stress and poor sleep are linked to a higher risk of high blood pressure. Chamomile’s calming properties may help indirectly by promoting better rest.

Chamomile also contains flavonoids and phenolic acids, plant compounds that act as antioxidants that may help reduce inflammation in the body. While research directly linking chamomile to lower blood pressure is limited, these antioxidants may help reduce oxidative stress and support healthy blood vessel function.

Black tea is made from the same Camellia sinensis plant as green tea, but the leaves are fully oxidized, giving it a rich flavor and darker color. It’s a natural source of flavonoids that may help protect blood vessels, reduce inflammation, and support healthy circulation.

Several studies have found that people who drink black tea regularly (typically two to five cups per day) tend to have lower blood pressure than those who don’t. The effects are modest, but even small reductions can make a meaningful difference for heart health.

Like green tea, black tea contains caffeine, so it might not be ideal for those sensitive to stimulants.

Oolong tea is partially oxidized, meaning it falls somewhere between green and black tea in both color and flavor. It contains a blend of beneficial compounds like catechins, theaflavins, and other polyphenols with antioxidant properties.

There’s less research on oolong tea than on green or black tea, but some studies suggest it may help lower blood pressure. In one trial, people who drank GABA-enriched oolong tea showed improvements in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Most commercially available oolong tea doesn’t contain GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). GABA is a neurotransmitter that helps calm the nervous system. More research is needed to understand whether oolong without GABA has the same effect, but its mix of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds may also support healthier blood vessels.

Some studies have also linked oolong tea with a lower likelihood of developing hypertension. An older, long-term study from 2004 found that those who enjoyed at least half a cup of oolong or green tea each day were up to 46% less likely to develop high blood pressure, with greater benefits seen among those who drank multiple cups daily. More current research is needed.

When fresh garlic is crushed or chopped, it releases allicin, a sulfur compound linked to reduced oxidative stress and better circulation. Research suggests that allicin may help relax blood vessels and modestly lower blood pressure.

Research on garlic tea itself is limited, but studies on garlic supplements show promising results. People who regularly consume garlic supplements have significant reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, especially those with existing hypertension.

If you want to try garlic tea, simmer chopped or crushed garlic cloves in hot water, then add lemon or honey to soften the flavor.

Ginger tea is warming, spicy, and often used to support digestion, but it also may offer cardiovascular benefits. While more research is needed on ginger tea specifically, compounds in ginger appear to help relax blood vessels, reduce inflammation, and support healthy circulation.

A study of more than 4,000 adults found that those who consumed ginger regularly had a lower risk of developing hypertension. Smaller clinical trials and meta-analyses also suggest that ginger intake (including tea or supplements) can modestly lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Not every tea supports healthy blood pressure. Some can have the opposite effect or interact with medications. These include:

  • Licorice tea: Licorice root contains glycyrrhizin, a compound that can cause the body to retain sodium and lose potassium. Glycyrrhizin can raise blood pressure and may also interact with certain medications.
  • Highly caffeinated teas: Caffeine can temporarily raise blood pressure, particularly in people who don’t consume it regularly. Since sensitivity varies from person to person, it’s best to monitor how caffeine affects you and start with smaller amounts.
  • Energy, fat-burning, or “detox” teas: Some blends include stimulants or extra ingredients that may raise heart rate or blood pressure.

My Son Won the Championship, then Passed 15 Kidney Stones

November is National Caregivers Month.

My son Jack, a second grader at the time, stayed home sick from school on Friday, but woke up Saturday feeling better and ready to play in his two basketball games — one was the championship. It was going to be a big weekend, for more reasons than we knew as we piled Jack’s gear into the car that morning. Shortly after Jack assisted in his team’s championship win, he was admitted to the hospital on his way to getting a life-altering diagnosis.

Jack is an active, healthy kid who loves sports and plays baseball, basketball and football. He’s always been prone to stomach issues, but it never concerned his pediatrician, so it didn’t concern us. An upset stomach wasn’t an unusual symptom when Jack was sick. But that Friday he also said his hips were hurting. It wasn’t quite a red flag, but it was a little unusual.

After the championship game, Jack, my mom and I drove from our home in Erie, Pennsylvania, to Pittsburgh to see my niece’s dance recital. Jack was tired, which made sense: he’d played intense sports shortly after recovering from a stomach bug.

At the recital the next day, he turned to me and said he felt very dizzy. The red flag appeared to me. He then told me it had been hurting him to urinate for a couple of days. More red flags popped up. We had to leave.

We stood up, shuffled quickly out of the recital, and drove home to Erie and directly to urgent care, where Jack’s urine sample showed signs of blood. We were sent to the emergency room, and learned Jack was in kidney failure and his creatinine, a kidney enzyme, was more than five times the normal level. He was rushed to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. There, Jack passed 15 kidney stones over a two-day period.

Why was this happening? The doctors first looked for answers in Jack’s diet. They asked me what Jack was eating and drinking. I was stunned when they asked if it was possible that he had drunk antifreeze.

But as Jack’s painful kidney stones passed — and he was so brave passing them — his high creatinine levels dropped immediately, and Jack felt better as well. But when his levels stabilized still above the normal range, the doctors now believed his kidneys were being affected by a chronic illness, a disease he’d had for a while.

We settled into hospital life as Jack was monitored, had more tests and awaited a diagnosis. I was a full-time professor of math education at Penn State’s Erie campus and taught my classes from Jack’s hospital room. My mind flashed back to all the warning signs that didn’t register as red flags. Jack was prone to stomach bugs, but we compared that to the way some kids had frequent ear infections. Jack was always thirsty and couldn’t seem to get or stay hydrated, but we thought that was because of his active lifestyle and sports schedule.

When we first came to the hospital, one doctor had listed primary hyperoxaluria (PH) as a possible cause for Jack’s illness, but said it was unlikely. Jack gets an injection every three months, and we have to monitor his hydration carefully, but Jack has always been great about drinking water.

Jack is incredibly fortunate his kidneys are stabilizing on the medication. The injections don’t reverse his kidney disease, but they prevent more damage from happening.

We hope Jack won’t need a liver or kidney transplant and that his creatinine levels, while still high, can be maintained. Jack’s medication is so new that his case is being studied. There are still a lot of unknowns, but we try to remain optimistic and proactive while also staying grounded and informed. We learned from a genetic test that both my husband and I are carriers of PH, and that our younger son is a carrier. Only Jack has the illness.

We see doctors that specialize in kidney and urinary tract health and travel from Erie to Pittsburgh or Akron to see them. Despite the disruption, Jack lives a mostly regular life as a sixth grader. He still plays baseball, football and basketball and loves all his sports.

While Jack’s day-to-day life is as normal as possible, I can feel anxiety grow when we approach a date for a bunch of important lab tests or a nephrology visit. I find myself bracing for the fear that comes with seeing his test results come back as abnormal, which is a jarring feeling when you’re watching your healthy-looking kid run around on a football field.
