Our annual AskMen Fitness Awards are back, and we’re proud to announce that this year’s competition was larger and fiercer than ever before, with a record number of brands participating. In our most competitive categories, more than a dozen products vied for the top spot, while our panel of judges, encompassing current and former college athletes, weekend warriors and personal trainers, worked overtime to generate feedback and vote on winners.
This year, our largest and most competitive category by far was Supplements, with upwards of a dozen different brands competing for the most coveted awards, so our panel of judges had their work cut out for them in picking winners. From staples like protein powders and multivitamins to more niche supplements like energy gels and gut health healers, we gradually narrowed the list to bring you the most delicious, most effective options in 2025.
Whether you’re trying to build muscle, cut excess fat, achieve a deeper sleep or help your body recover faster from workouts, we’ve got something for you.
This great-tasting, easy-mixing protein powder from Thread Performance impressed us with its delicious flavors (Chocolate Brownie and Vanilla Birthday Cake), portable serving packets, and comprehensive blend of superfoods, vitamins and minerals, including everything from Ashwagandha to egg shells. If you’re looking for a daily protein option and want to maximize your nutrient uptake in the process, Daily Fuel lives up to its name.

Granted, you have to like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups to like this offering from Cellucor, but if you don’t like Reese’s, we think your taste buds are suspect. Cellucor managed to pack 25 grams of protein and 0 grams of added sugar into each serving, for a total of just 140 calories, which is pretty outrageous when you consider just how good this powder tastes. We especially recommend this if you’re on a cut and need something chocolatey and delicious to help curb your cravings without sabotaging your diet.
The slow-digesting casein should be your protein of choice before sleep, but it’s also the preferred baking protein because it’s more absorptive. Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard Casein, available in two sizes and four delicious flavor options, is good no matter how you take it, packing in 24 grams of protein and 9 grams of essential amino acids in every serving. We especially love that it mixes so easily, whether you’re using water or milk, resulting in smooth, easy-drinking shake every time.
If you’re particularly health conscious and want a delicious, plant-based protein that’s easy to digest, check out Wellious. It’s available in three flavor options (Chocolate, Vanilla and Unflavored), made from just four ingredients (and just one ingredient in the case of the unflavored option), including almond, chickpeas and monk fruit for sweetening. Each serving delivers 17 grams of protein powder in just 120 calories, but this is so much more than just a protein powder, as those all-natural ingredients also pack a superfood punch of biotin, magnesium, calcium, collagen and fiber that will dramatically improve your overall sense of wellbeing.
If you can’t be bothered to mix up a shake or just like the convenience of having a ready-made protein shake at hand or in your fridge, you’ll love Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard Protein Shake. It’s available in Chocolate, Strawberry and Vanilla flavors, all of which taste like milkshakes with a fraction of the calories and 24 grams of protein, but it’s the added minerals and vitamins (everything from iron and potassium to iodine and selenium) that sold us.
Whether you’re vegan or just want an easy-to-digest protein shake that also tastes great, you’ll love the Koia Nutritio Elite Shake. Each bottle packs a whopping 32 grams of protein and six grams of fiber, with just four grams of sugar, and a list of ingredients that’s refreshingly natural and non-GMO, including chicory root fiber, organic cane sugar and good old sea salt. Of course, all of these nutritional benefits would go to waste if the shake wasn’t also delicious, but we’re happy to report they nailed the flavor too, whether you opt for vanilla or chocolate.

If you’re a skinny guy trying to pack on pounds, the sheer volume of food you have to eat to gain your surplus calories can be daunting. That’s where a good mass gainer comes in, and Naked Nutrition has nailed the formula with their Naked Mass option. Each serving contains 50 grams of protein and a whopping 1,260 calories, including 261 grams of complex carbs and 12.9 grams of branched-chain amino acids, so you can rest assured that you’re hitting your nutritional goals with every sip.
Inexpensive, delicious, easy to mix and digest — Cellucor’s COR-Performance creatine monohydrate should be in your daily regime. It’s available in the classic unflavored option, ideal for those of you who like to take it in a protein shake or sports drink, but we highly recommend their flavored varieties (Watermelon, Blue Raspberry and Fruit Punch) as well. And if you have a sensitive stomach or a history of trouble digesting creatine, good news: Cellucor’s micronized creatine is highly water soluble, allowing it to mix well and absorb easily.
There’s an endless variety of pre-workouts on the market now, most of which are more hype than substance, but we fell in love with Shaklee’s Performance Pre-Workout Drink. Combining beta-alanine, L-theanine, and caffeine, it delivers a fast-acting surge of energy without the shakes, stomach issues or post-workout crash that plagues other pre-workouts, and its natural lemon flavoring manages to be delicious without tasting artificial, which is another hurdle many pre-workouts crash out on.
Not everyone has the luxury of training in the morning or in the early afternoon. If you have to hit the gym after work or even after the sun goes down, you’ll want a pre-workout that moves through your system quickly, giving you the energy you need without disrupting your sleep schedule. The best of these “stim-free” pre-workouts we tested this year was the 110% Nutrition Non-Stim Preworkout, which delivered incredible pumps without caffeine. Key ingredients include L-citrulline malate and betaine anhydrous, as well as a host of minerals to help promote better blood flow, from sodium and potassium to magnesium and chloride. And with delicious flavors like Sour Apple Bubblegum and Sweet Tea Lemonade, even your taste buds will look forward to your workouts.
If you’re in and out of the gym in under an hour, you can skip an intra-workout supplement, but for those of you who combine cardio and strength training in a single session, or are training for an endurance event, an intra-workout can help you stave off fatigue and keep your training intensity high. Our favorite intra of 2025 belongs to Transparent Labs, which combines essential amino acids with nitric oxide enhancers like l-citrulline and hydrators like coconut water to deliver a mid-workout kick, helping you train both harder and longer.
If there’s one recent fitness trend we’re majorly in favor of, it’s the focus on post-workout recovery. Too many people narrowly focus on the gym and neglect sleep, nutrition and recovery, setting themselves up for failure in the long term. Thread Performance’s Daily Strength capsules contain a blend of organic ingredients proven to increase stamina, enhance muscle protein synthesis and reduce muscle fatigue, helping you recover from the last workout and crush the next. The harder you work, the greater the benefit you’ll get from a daily dose of Daily Strength.

The health of your gut microbiome impacts basically every area of your overall health, from your energy levels to your mood to your immune system, so you neglect it at your peril. That’s why we love Nella, a probiotic supplement developed by FitBiomics to help support your workouts and quicken your muscle recovery using three distinct strains of Lactobacillus bacteria that work holistically to improve nutrient absorption and improve your sleep. We found this probiotic supplement especially helpful during periods of caloric restriction, when we’re most vulnerable to bad sleep and a weakened immune system.
Collagen is something of a super supplement, helping improve your skin elasticity, hair density, joint mobility and bone health, so it’s definitely worth adding to your supplement stack, especially if you’re getting on in years. Our favorite collagen supplement of 2025 is the Rewind Collagen Elixir from LTH. Combining a hefty dose of collagen peptides with hyaluronic acid, lutein and a potent antioxidant mix, while leaving out added sugars and artificial colors and sweeteners, this elixir not only made us feel younger after a few short weeks of regular usage; it also made us look younger, with visibly diminished fine lines and tighter facial skin.
By now, everyone knows about the benefits of omega-3 supplementation (improved cardiovascular health, reduced inflammation, and even better mood and enhanced cognition, to name just a few), but too many guys are buying poorly sourced, poorly dosed omega-3 pills. Alkamind’s Acid-Kicking Omega-3 offers pharmaceutical-grade potency, with ingredients sourced exclusively from deep-water, cold-ocean and wild-caught fish that is then rigorously tested against over 400 potential contaminants. This stuff is pure, effective and a total no-brainer for enhancing your overall well-being.
True to their goal of delivering zero fillers, no sneaky proprietary blends, and no artificial preservatives, while still offering the essential ingredients in the appropriate, clinically-proven dosages, 110% Nutrition absolutely knocked it out of the park with their Complete Aminos formula. Each serving delivers a hefty dose of EAAs, BCAAs and even key hydration and recovery nutrients like glutamine, magnesium citrate, potassium chloride and pink Himalayan sea salt, making it equally useful as a mid-workout hydrator or post-workout recovery drink.
If you’re constantly tired, sore or lethargic in the aftermath of your workouts, you’re doing something wrong, and it’s probably not taking your recovery seriously enough. If you’ve already taken care of the basics like ensuring you’re eating enough food and getting enough sleep, give Harlo’s 3-in-1- Performance Mix a try. Combining clean, potent ingredients like creatine, collagen and electrolytes (in effective dosages, of course) into multiple delicious flavor options (watermelon, raspberry, citrus, and pineapple), Harlo helps replenish lost nutrients, promote stronger and healthier joints, and improve muscle recovery. You can take it immediately after a workout or even as a morning boost to help break your fast and rehydrate your body after a long night’s sleep.
We hate clumpy, chalky protein shakes every bit as much as you do, which is why we were so glad to discover the Vortex Blender from HELIMIX. Thanks to its clever design (and some basic physics), the Vortex manages to deliver a perfectly mixed protein shake every single time, without the need for whisks, blender balls, or a mini forearm workout. It’s also available in two size options (20 and 28 ounces) and 22 color options, so it’s incredibly easy to personalize one to your preferences.
Barebells Protein Bars have developed a bit of a cult following online, and for good reason: they’re tasty, made with simple ingredients, packed with protein, and available in a massive variety of delicious flavors. If you need a high-protein, guilt-free snack to take to the office or to substitute for a small meal before a workout, these are the protein bars for you.
Delicious, easy on the stomach, low in calories, and made from all-natural ingredients and flavors, these vegan protein bars from Simply Protein deliver 13 grams of protein in as little as 160 calories per bar, making them a phenomenal pre-workout boost or snack to tide you over between meals. And because of the high fiber content, they’re surprisingly filling. Choose from any of six flavors or opt for a variety box to experiment with all of them.
Feeling drained before a big workout and looking for energy in a hurry? You need an energy gel, and specifically Chargel. These fast-digesting blends of vitamins and carbs come in single-serving pouches, offering you a portable dose of energy to fuel your workout, temporarily satisfy your hunger cravings, or give you the boost you need to get through your day. They’re currently available in three delicious flavors (strawberry, apple and white grape), or in a handy trial kit containing all three, to help you pick a favorite.
We love energy drinks as much as the next guy, but we’re wary of miles-long ingredient lists filled with chemicals we can’t even pronounce. KEY Energy Drinks take an all-natural approach, using ketones (acids created by your body when it’s using fat instead of glucose as an energy source) instead of sugar to give your body a boost. Because of this approach, they can also get away with using far less caffeine than their rivals, delivering the energy boost you crave without the inevitable crash that comes from a caffeine binge. KEY Energy Drinks are currently available in Pineapple Passionfruit, Grapefruit Peach and Ginger Lime, but we recommend starting with the variety pack to experience every flavor before you commit.
Halfway between an energy drink and an energy gel is an energy chew, and while we admit the concept was foreign to us at first, Honey Stinger Energy Chews sold us, big time. These bite-sized gummies come in seven delicious flavors, all of which are dairy-, gluten- and GMO-free. They’re a portable snack that delivers a hefty dose of simple carbs to fuel your upcoming workout, as well as a welcome dose of vitamin C, and because they come in individual packets, they’re perfect to take to the office or leave in your car for future energy emergencies.
Because we humans work on a day-night cycle, our bodies have different nutrient requirements depending on the time of day. KAL Vitamins honor that need with their AM/PM multivitamin, which delivers most of its energy-, immunity- and metabolism-supporting vitamins in the morning dose, helping set you up for a day of work and training, while reserving its evening dose contains ingredients that support recovery and relaxation, including iron, turmeric and magnesium glycinate.
When it comes time to start a diet and you already have to sacrifice calories, the last thing you want to give up is flavor. That’s why we love Yo Mama’s BBQ Sauce. Vegan, low in sodium and carbs, gluten-free and paleo-friendly, these delicious sauces are available in five flavors and multiple size and quantity combinations, making it very easy to coordinate your meal planning and stick to your diet, so if you’ve been looking for a way to jazz up your basic chicken breast or lean ground beef, give these a try.
Gut issues are no joke. In fact, they can completely sabotage your training or set your fitness goals back days or even weeks. Whether you suffer from indigestion, heartburn, acid reflux, or just basic bloat and stomach cramps, Alkamind’s Kick Acid Reflux Bundle offers a comprehensive approach to healing your gut. It works by taking a multi-pronged approach, using minerals, omega-3 fatty acids and nutrient-rich greens to help loosen up your bowels, eliminate bloating and attack acid reflux at the root, resulting in better digestion, improved nutrient absorption, and even better sleep.
An unbelievable number of men are walking around with significant mineral deficiencies, causing everything from constant food cravings to bad sleep and a persistent inability to focus. Alkamind’s Acid-Kicking Minerals stack uses four distinct alkaline minerals and an organic lemon juice powder to deliver essential nutrients to your body, including chelated magnesium in the ideal 1:1 ratio with calcium, to help you achieve a deeper sleep and boost your mental clarity throughout the day.
Nothing will sabotage your progress in the gym or in life quite like inadequate sleep, which is why we fell in love with Protekt’s REST Liquid Formula. Combining well-established sleep aids like valerian root, theanine and GABA, and excluding sugars, artificial colors and flavors, and other unwanted fillers, each packet delivers a dose-appropriate liquid sleep aid that mixes perfectly in water, without a spoon, and acts fast to help you fall asleep quickly.
Although they also offer a sugar-based hydration supplement, we fell in love with DripDrop’s Zero Sugar hydration packets. Each easy-to-open pouch contains a potent dose of electrolytes, b vitamins, magnesium, zinc and vitamin c, and they’re engineered with low osmolarity (a fancy way of saying the solute concentration isn’t very dense), which means they mix very easily in water, leaving you with a delicious, fast-acting drink to help you replenish your body after long runs or grueling workouts.
Whether you’re fighting male pattern baldness, trying to revive thinning hairs, or just want the peace of mind that comes from giving your follicles and scalp the nutrient support they need, Nutrafol’s Hair Growth Nutraceutical is a comprehensive hair supplement that combines every scientifically-backed nutrient for hair growth, from biotin and ashwagandha to saw palmetto and hyaluronic acid, in a single, convenient capsule.
Your skin is the single largest organ in the human body, but it’s also the most neglected from a health perspective. Yes, washing your face is great, as is using a moisturizer, but there are a lot of skin problems, from acne to wrinkles, that are best attacked from inside. Pure Synergy’s Radiant Skin Bundle offers a comprehensive stack of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, including vitamin c, zinc and astaxanthin, to help improve your skin tone, texture and suppleness. It works by naturally increasing your skin’s collagen production, improving skin elasticity and boosting your skin’s moisture levels. You can tell how seriously the good folks at Pure Synergy take their formula by the attention they put into storage: the amber glass bottle and aluminum lid help prevent plastic contamination while protecting the integrity and potency of their formula.
Sickness is a setback, in life and in the gym, which is why we love having Protekt’s liquid Immunity formula on hand. Combining fast-acting antioxidants with zinc, vitamin c, vitamin d, and soothing echinacea, this all-natural, zero-sugar formula helps support your immune system when it most needs the help, staving off colds and flus and helping you push your training intensity up, even during flu season.
Matcha, the finely ground powder made from specially grown green tea leaves, has long been revered for its health benefits.
Nearly available at every coffee chain and spotted in the hands of Rihanna to Gwyneth Paltrow you can’t miss the green ingredient.
Matcha, made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, hails from Japan and is famous for its bold, earthy flavor, often described as grassy due to its high chlorophyll content.
Traditionally consumed as a tea rich in antioxidants and amino acids, it is now making waves in the beauty industry.
From skin care to fragrance, matcha is being embraced for its detoxifying, anti-inflammatory, and soothing properties.
According to Pinterest UK data, searches for “matcha” have surged by 155%, while interest in “matcha aesthetic” and “matcha nails” has also risen by 60% and 20%.
ADM has published a study in the journal Animals demonstrating that adding a supplement containing postbiotic Bifidobacterium longum CECT 7347 (PRIOME Gut Health) and Fibersol-2 (Pet Fibersol) to cat diets significantly improves intestinal health.
Postbiotic Bifidobacterium longum CECT 7347 (PRIOME Gut Health) has been shown to enhance gut microbiota balance and strengthen the intestinal barrier, thereby improving gastrointestinal health during dietary changes. Fibersol-2 (Pet Fibersol) further supports digestive health by increasing beneficial bacteria levels while offering additional benefits such as a low glycemic index, reduced body fat and improved adaptation to high-protein diets with better odor control. Together, these ingredients work synergistically to improve intestinal health and overall well-being in cats.
“We understand the vital role gut health plays in pets’ overall well-being, particularly during dietary changes,” said Mark Lotsch, president of Global Health & Wellness at ADM. “Insights from this study will open new doors for creating innovative pet food solutions that enhance digestive health and nutritional balance.”
In a 28-day clinical trial conducted at the Pet Nutrition Research Center in Beijing, 24 cats were divided into two groups each consisting of 12 cats (6 males and 6 females in each group). From day 1 to day 14, both groups of cats were fed lower protein diet (33%) (LPF). The treated group received a supplement of 0.16% functional additives, including Bifidobacterium longum CECT 7347 and Fibersol-2, while the control group did not receive this supplement. From day 15 to day 28, both groups switched to higher-protein diet (40%) (HPF) and the treated group continued to receive the same supplement.
Cats that received the supplement showed significant improvements in serum lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a marker of intestinal permeability, both before and after the diet change. Following the diet change, supplemented cats also had increased secretary immunoglobulin A (sIgA) compared to the control group, indicating enhanced immune function, and beneficial changes in the microbiome, including increased abundance of Blautia and increased microbial beta diversity.
Additionally, while both groups showed an increase in fecal pH, the treated group had a notably lower pH compared to the control group. This difference may be explained by the higher levels of Blautia, a beneficial bacterium that produces organic acids like lactic acid, helping to regulate intestinal pH levels.
According to Petfood Industry’s Company Overview, ADM has specialized in formulating and manufacturing custom premixes and ingredient blends for more than 40 years. The company said it offers the most comprehensive range of products and value-added services in the pet food industry, leveraging the resources and unmatched expertise of one of the world’s largest agricultural processors and food ingredient solutions providers.

Persistent sleep struggles, especially due to insomnia, can be a major disruption to your life. You may notice a negative impact on your mood, energy levels, and focus.
While therapy and medication can help, some supplements can serve as more natural remedies to a disrupted sleep schedule.
Supplements like melatonin, valerian root, and magnesium may be good options to try before seeking medical attention.
Melatonin is a hormone that regulates circadian rhythms, the sleep-wake cycle that helps you wake up and fall asleep. When it gets dark, your brain makes more melatonin, which tells your body to sleep. When it’s light out, your brain decreases melatonin production, telling your body to be awake.
Taking melatonin supplements can increase your body’s production of melatonin. The supplement seems to work best for people who have trouble falling asleep and people with sleep-wake disorders (e.g., people who are blind). Melatonin may also help with insomnia and jet lag, but only as a short-term treatment option.
In adults, melatonin is safe in doses of up to 8 milligrams for up to six months. In children, melatonin is often used in doses of 3 milligrams daily for up to three months. If you decide to take melatonin, it’s best if you take it 1-2 hours before bedtime.
Side effects of melatonin include headache, dizziness, increased need to pee, sleepiness, and nausea.
Valerian root is an herb from the valerian plant (Valeriana officinalis). Researchers believe valerian helps you sleep by increasing your brain’s levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter. GABA slows down brain activity, helping you relax and fall asleep.
Some studies say valerian root supplements are helpful for sleep, while others don’t find many benefits. More studies are needed to understand how useful valerian is for sleep.
Side effects reported with valerian include headache, dizziness, skin rash, and nausea. If you decide to take valerian, you should take it one hour before bedtime. If you have insomnia, the dosing typically ranges from 300-600 milligrams.
Doses above 600 milligrams may cause drowsiness the following morning. People who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take valerian.
Small studies show that tart cherry juice may improve sleep and reduce insomnia. It contains melatonin and helps with inflammation, which may support sleep regulation. Tart cherry juice can be combined with other supplements that help induce sleep, like magnesium or melatonin.
A recommended daily dose of tart cherry juice is 240-480 milliliters. If you decide to try it, you should take it 1-2 hours before bedtime. Potential side effects of tart cherry juice and supplements include stomach pain and diarrhea.
Magnesium is a mineral necessary for energy and protein production. It may also help promote sleep health, normalizing the circadian rhythm and quality of sleep.
Data is mixed on whether magnesium is helpful for sleep. Some studies report an association between taking a lot of magnesium and better sleep quality, while others do not report a benefit. More well-designed studies are needed to evaluate how magnesium affects sleep quality.
Research suggests magnesium supplement doses above 500 milligrams per day for more than eight weeks can improve sleep time and quality. Common side effects reported with magnesium include diarrhea, nausea, and stomach pain.
Tryptophan is an amino acid found in various foods and available as a supplement. When your body absorbs it, it turns into serotonin, which helps you feel tired and calm.
Tryptophan doses of 1 gram or higher may help improve insomnia and help you fall asleep faster. If you decide to try it, you should take it 20 minutes to one hour before bedtime. Side effects reported with tryptophan include diarrhea, dry mouth, gas, headache, and nausea.
L-theanine is an amino acid found in tea leaves, specifically green tea. It increases GABA in your brain, which can help relieve anxiety, stress, and insomnia symptoms.
L-theanine is typically taken in doses of 200-400 milligrams daily for 4-8 weeks. Side effects reported with L-theanine include drowsiness and headache.
Glycine is an amino acid important for brain and nervous system health. It relaxes blood vessels and lowers body temperature. Glycine also increases the release of serotonin, leading to further relaxation.
Glycine is found in high-protein foods and supplements.
Research shows glycine doses of 3 grams daily before bedtime can help with sleep quality and improve daytime fatigue. Doses up to 6 grams for four weeks are considered safe. Side effects associated with glycine include nausea, vomiting, headache, and stomach discomfort.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is the active ingredient found in cannabis. CBD does not cause a “high” and may be helpful for many health conditions, including anxiety, seizures, and pain.
It is unclear how CBD helps you sleep. One small study in adults found that CBD improved anxiety and sleep symptoms after one month of use. More studies are needed to understand if CBD is useful for insomnia.
CBD products are available as food, oils, lotions, capsules, and cosmetics. There is no standard CBD dose for insomnia, though studies have considered doses up to 1,500 milligrams a day safe.
Potential side effects include liver damage, drowsiness, diarrhea, nausea, and decreased appetite. CBD is not recommended for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Some states still consider CBD a controlled substance, while it is available over-the-counter (OTC) in others.
Lavender is an evergreen plant popular in bath products, perfumes, and decorations. Inhaling lavender oil (aromatherapy) or applying it to the skin may improve insomnia symptoms.
Lavender aromatherapy has been tested in various populations and for several diseases. Overall, it seems to be safe and helpful for sleep.
One study tested lavender oil’s effect on sleep and vital signs in people in a palliative care facility. Researchers found that lavender did not affect the participant’s vital signs but did positively affect their sleep quality.
Another study in postmenopausal women with insomnia found that lavender oil improved sleep patterns and sleep quality.
Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is a traditional herb believed to help with anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), opioid withdrawal, and menopause symptoms. The herb may also be useful in sleep and insomnia.
Passionflower contains GABA, a neurotransmitter that helps you relax and rest. One study evaluated passionflower’s effect on adults with insomnia and found that a 60-milligram dose at bedtime for two weeks increased how long participants stayed asleep.
The recommended dose of passionflower for insomnia is not well understood, though many supplements contain 250-900 milligrams of passionflower.
Chamomile has been used for centuries to treat numerous conditions, including anxiety, stress, and sleep disorders.
Chamomile may help you sleep because it binds to GABA receptors, which are involved in sleep-wake cycles. The herb may also contain melatonin. However, the exact mechanism of how chamomile works is not well understood.
Studies evaluating chamomile for insomnia are conflicting. Most show no significant improvement in insomnia symptoms, but some suggest that chamomile improves overall sleep quality. More studies are needed to understand chamomile’s role in insomnia and sleep quality.
Chamomile is commonly consumed as a tea, though supplements are also available. Chamomile is safe in doses of up to 1,500 milligrams daily for up to 26 weeks. Side effects reported with chamomile are rare but include diarrhea, drowsiness, and headache.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t regulate supplements like it regulates drugs. Therefore, it’s important to look for supplements certified by an independent third-party testing organization.
These organizations ensure products contain their claimed ingredients and are free of potential contaminants. Some examples of logos to look for on supplement products are NSF and the United States Pharmacopeia (USP).
When choosing a supplement for sleep, you should consider:
Talk with your healthcare provider before taking a supplement for sleep. They can help review your medical history and determine if any other products you take may interact with the supplement.
If sleep issues affect your daily life or last longer than a month, you should speak to a healthcare provider. Poor sleeping habits can take a toll on your health and affect you physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Your healthcare provider can provide information on potential lifestyle changes, therapy options, and prescription or OTC medications that may help improve your sleep habits.
Bad sleep can be common, but sometimes it’s due to sleep disorders like insomnia, which can affect your sleep quality long-term. This condition can affect mood and mental health, cause a lack of energy throughout the day, and affect your ability to focus.
Lifestyle changes, therapy, and prescription medication can treat sleep disorders like insomnia. Some people may also opt for supplements. Certain supplements, such as melatonin, valerian root, and magnesium, may help support better quality sleep.
If you are interested in taking supplements for sleep, talk with your healthcare provider. They can help you decide whether a supplement is safe for you and if it interacts with other medications or supplements you are taking.
A daily omega-3 supplement seems to slow biological ageing in older people, particularly if combined with vitamin D and exercise.
We already knew that omega-3s – “good” fats found in seeds, nuts and some fish – can boost our immunity, heart health and brain function.
They have also been linked to changes in “epigenetic” markers, chemical tags on DNA that alter the activity of genes and, in turn, how cells behave. This suggests that omega-3s reduce the pace of biological ageing, often defined as a measure of how quickly someone’s body is deteriorating compared with the general population’s.
To explore this further, Heike Bischoff-Ferrari at the University of Zurich and her colleagues split 777 people in Switzerland, aged 70 to 91, into eight groups. They also wanted to find out how omega-3 may work alongside vitamin D supplements and exercise.
“Omega-3 plays on multiple pathways of ageing, such as being anti-inflammatory. Similarly, vitamin D and exercise have multiple benefits,” says Bischoff-Ferrari. “We thought, if you play on each of these differential pathways, do you get an additive benefit?”
Some of the participants were already taking these supplements or doing strength training at the start of the study. It didn’t seem ethical to tell them to stop exercising or stop taking certain supplements, says Bischoff-Ferrari, so they were allowed to continue.
On top of their existing lifestyle habits, each group was told to take varying combinations of a daily 1-gram dose of omega-3, placebo pills and 2000 international units of vitamin D. In addition, some groups were instructed to do 30 minutes of strength training three times a week.
For instance, some people were told to take omega-3 pills, but not vitamin D supplements or to do any additional strength training, while others were told to add in strength training and take vitamin D, but not omega-3.
At the start of the study, the researchers estimated the participants’ biological ages using “epigenetic clocks” previously developed by the team and other researchers. These analysed DNA markers called methyl groups in their blood samples that generally decline with age, impairing cell function.
By doing the same three years later, the scientists found that the participants who were told to take omega-3 only had aged by around 3 months less, on average, than those who were only given placebo pills. They accounted for factors that could affect the results, such as the participants’ actual age, sex, weight and height.
“This is the biggest trial we have today that hints that a simple supplement contributes to slowing biological ageing,” says Bischoff-Ferrari.
What’s more, those who took omega-3 along with vitamin D and did strength training aged even less, compared with people who didn’t introduce any of these habits as part of the trial. “The effect was somewhat more pronounced, almost four months of rejuvenation,” says Bischoff-Ferrari.
These effects may seem small but could be important for some, says Richard Siow at King’s College London. “For an older person, in about three months, there could be a lot of age-related decline going on, so this becomes more significant,” he says.
But epigenetic clocks are not a perfect measure of biological ageing. “Just because biomarkers on your DNA indicate that you resemble someone who is younger, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are healthier in some way,” says Siow.
Further research should assess what the changes mean for measures such as cognition, ability to exercise and heart health, he says. Bischoff-Ferrari’s team is now analysing the participants’ data on such outcomes.
Another limitation of the study is that the participants were relatively healthy and active, and mostly not deficient in vitamin D. Further studies that involve people without these characteristics, and who are younger and live in other countries, are needed, says Bischoff-Ferrari.

Creatine – best known for its use by bodybuilders – could help enhance the effects of talking therapy as a treatment for depression, recent research suggests.
Around 280 million people have depression worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. The condition is often treated using psychotherapies, pharmacotherapies, or a combination of both – but while these can be incredibly effective for some people, not everyone sees the same benefit.
“Between one-third and one-quarter of patients do not respond to any antidepressant strategy or drop out from any treatment due to inefficacy or adverse events,” the researchers write in their paper. As a result, it’s vitally important that we explore other potential treatment options, to help as many patients as possible find the solution that works for them.
Creatine, when used alongside existing therapies, could be a valuable weapon in our arsenal. The organic compound is present naturally in certain animal-based foods as well as supplements and is produced in our liver and brain, helping to provide cells with energy – hence its use in bodybuilding and other sports. Previous research has hinted at its potential benefits when it comes to depression: it’s shown promise in animal models of depression, and preliminary evidence from several human trials has suggested it may enhance the effects of antidepressant drugs.
Building upon this burgeoning bank of research, the team behind the latest study explored creatine in addition to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) – a talking therapy that aims to help patients manage their problems by changing the way they think and behave.
“Creatine could enhance the effects of CBT by promoting cognitive and behavioural functioning while also expressing a direct antidepressant action,” they hypothesize, adding that “to present this has not been tested in a clinical trial setting”.
To investigate, the researchers recruited 100 people in India with mild to severe depression who hadn’t taken antidepressants in at least eight weeks. At baseline, they completed a questionnaire that provided them each with a depression score, ranging from zero (no depression) to 27 (severe depression). At this stage, the average score was 17.6 (moderately-severe depression).
The participants then went on to receive one of two treatments: either 5 grams (0.2 ounces) a day of oral creatine monohydrate; or the same dosage of oral starch, which acted as a placebo. Both treatment plans were accompanied by biweekly CBT.
After eight weeks, with just 30 people left in each study arm, depression scores were lower in both groups – but significantly more so for those taking creatine. The creatine group now had an average depression score of 5.8 (mild depression), while the placebo group scored 11.9 (moderate depression).
“That’s actually a very, very large effect of creatine,” Brent Kious at the University of Utah, who was not involved in the study, told New Scientist. “Definitely an effect that a patient would notice in terms of well-being.”
It seems, based on these results, that creatine may be able to increase the antidepressant efficacy of CBT. It was also safe and well-tolerated. However, larger, longer, and more diverse trials are needed to fully assess the efficacy of creatine as part of depression treatment. If these prove fruitful, creatine could just cement itself as an effective and inexpensive addition to future antidepressant strategies.
The study is published in the journal European Neuropsychopharmacology.

In our hectic modern world, it’s hard not to see the appeal of supplements. They’re quick, convenient, and promise to help you meet your daily recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of nutrients if you’re deficient or concerned that you’re not getting enough vitamins from your food. And one supp that’s currently trending? Nicotinamide mononucleotide, otherwise known as NMN.
As per the National Institute of Health website, NMN is a “precursor for NAD+ biosynthesis” that has the potential to “…mitigate aging-related disorders such as oxidative stress, DNA damage, neurodegeneration, and inflammatory responses.” And while it’s skyrocketed in popularity in recent years, we’ve asked top experts whether all the many reported NMN supplement benefits are too good to be true…
NMN supplements promise a whole lot, you see, including age-defying properties, boosted energy, enhanced metabolism, and improved brain health, in addition to the above. “Although it’s anti-ageing effects remains speculative, NMN has sparked significant interest in the longevity and wellness space,” says registered dietician Sapna Peruvemba.
Sure, it’s easy to get swept up in the latest diet fads, but here at MC UK, we always want to paint a balanced picture of the current scientific evidence, not to mention credible research, on trending health hacks.
To cut through the noise of these claims, we’ve talked to anti-ageing experts to see what they really think of this popular supplement and its various benefits. From registered dieticians to gerontologists, these specialists have answered all your burning questions about this so-called fountain of youth. Are the NMN supplement benefits backed up by science? Are they actually safe to try? And what supplements actually do offer a simple way to improve your health?
And once you’ve read the experts’ honest take, do check out more research-backed health advice, from what supplements you should take, to science-backed nutrition tips, to expert-approved stress supplements. Plus, take a look our guides to the benefits of mindful eating and MC UK’s Senior Health Editor Ally Head’s take on the viral inflammation diet.
First – let’s explain what NMN actually is. A molecule that occurs naturally in humans, animals, and plants, we’re all born with NMN in our bodies and, in time, it forms an important substance called nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+). “Our cells need NAD+ to keep them healthy via several different mechanisms, such as metabolism and DNA repair,” explains Dr Cathy Slack, an associate professor at the University of Warwick specialising in the biology of ageing. “Several of these processes become dysfunctional as we age – and, indeed, NAD+ levels also decline with age.”
And that’s where NMN supplements step in. “NMN supplements aim to boost NAD+ levels to counteract some of the damaging effects of ageing on our cells,” Slack tells us.
However, the researcher also says supplements aren’t the only way to get more NMN in our bodies. “We normally derive it from our diet, from fruits like avocados, dairy, and red meat,” she says. “Our cells can also produce NMN indirectly from vitamin B3.”

As mentioned above, the main aim of NMN supplements is to act against the effects of ageing and even age-related disorders. “NMN supplements are primarily used for those wanting to support their NAD+ levels as they naturally decline with age,” explains Trista Best, a registered dietician at The Candida Diet .”Those wanting to boost their cellular health and cognitive health have also found success with NMN supplements.”
In short, they promise to bring about a host of benefits. “The potential benefits of NMN include improved metabolic health, enhanced muscle strength and performance, better insulin sensitivity, and other anti-aging effects,” says dietician Peruvemba.
However, both Slack and Peruvemba assert that the current research on the health benefits of NMN supplements are unclear, so these potential benefits are just that – potential. More research needs to be done before we can conclusively prove the above.
According to Slack, a number of studies have demonstrated that NMN supplements increases NAD+ levels in small animal models (particularly mice). In each study, this has lead to numerous health and anti-ageing benefits, such as the suppression of fat gain, increased muscle function, better physical activity, and improved insulin sensitivity.
“The scientific research has shown that in cultured cells or animals, NMN supplements can indeed increase the cellular levels of NAD+, and this increase in NAD+ is associated with improved function.” says the researcher. “These studies are encouraging as they suggest that NMN supplementation may have beneficial effects on health, particularly in older animals.”
However, she points out that there are two major limitations with the current research into NME supplement benefits. Firstly, the lack of human trials that demonstrate the effects of NMN on human health and ageing, and secondly, a lack of human trials to investigate the safety of humans taking NMN supplements over long periods at the relatively high doses given to mice. “Most of the research conducted so far has been carried out on cells in culture or in animal models,” says Slack.
While there has been research on NMN supplements benefits in people – such as a 2021 study that found NMN supplements increased aerobic capacity in runners, or a 2022 study that found NMN increased muscle response in older adults – Slack and Peruvemba argue that more human trials are needed.
Peruvemba explains that it’s difficult to make conclusive claims about NMN’s efficacy over time or its potential risks without more comprehensive human studies. “Human studies are limited,” she says. “They’re typically short-term (four to 12 weeks), and do not provide clarity on long-term safety, optimal dosing, or whether the effects observed in animals actually translate to humans.”
Dr Richard Faragher, a professor of Biogerontology at the University of Brighton, also agrees that human data is limited, and emphasises that studies on the safety of these supplements are scarce. “The major drawback at the moment, in my view, is that there is a dearth of studies on the safety of these supplements,” he tells us. “It’s fair to say that the jury is currently out – while it’s probably safe to take, but the numbers of individuals involved in the trials seems to have been quite small.”
And while studies have demonstrated that NMN supplementation increases NAD+ concentration in both humans and experimental animals, Faragher also casts doubts over whether NAD+ declines at all. “Across species NAD+ levels are believed to fall with age, but the quality of evidence that this happens is not especially good – particularly in humans,” he argues.
These drawbacks of research into NMN supplement benefits were outlined in a recent review, which concluded that a number of actions need to be taken before NMN supplement benefits can be confidently marketed: conducting more human trials to investigate safety and tolerance; conducting more comprehensive studies to better understand the benefits; and gaining a clear definition of what a ‘normal’ concentration of NAD+ looks like.

“Right now, nobody,” says Faragher. “But when it comes to effectiveness, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.”
Peruvemba suggests that there are some who could benefit more from the potential advantages than others. “While many people are drawn to NMN for its anti-aging appeal, it may hold the most promise for those at higher risk of age-related diseases,” she says. “These include Alzheimer’s, diabetes (as aging can contribute to insulin resistance), cognitive decline, and muscle weakness.”
However, as with most supplements, Peruvemba says gaining the benefits of NMN should start with what’s on your plate. “While the allure of NMN and other supplements is understandable,” says the dietician. “There’s no replacement for the powerful anti-aging benefits of a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.”
With that in mind, Slack also says that she only recommends the supplements to those who aren’t able to gain NMN from diet. “Supplementation is most likely beneficial for individuals who are deficient in NMN or who find it difficult to incorporate NMN-containing foods into their daily diet,” she says.
Healthspan High Strength Omega 3, 6 & 9
“Omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and support aging internally from heart to joint health,” says Best.
BetterYou DLux+ Vitamin D+K2
“Vitamin D and K2 are essential for bone health and immune function,” says Best.
Holland & Barrett Vitamin C 1000mg 120 Tablets
“Vitamin C is an antioxidant that reduces oxidative stress and promotes collagen production,” explains Best.
“The most common dosage of NMN is 250 to 500 mg per day, with some studies showing doses up to 1,000 mg may be safe and effective,” says health specialist Best. “Individual factors will impact the exact dosage including age, health, goals, and weight. It is most commonly taken in the morning when NAD+ production is naturally higher.”
However, Best, Slack, and Peruvemba do not recommend going higher than the 1,000mg, and caution should be taken until more robust data confirms its long-term safety.
