PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The state’s chief legal officer is warning Arizonans about what she calls “dangerous products” being sold in stores.
Attorney General Kris Mayes says the items are being marketed as kratom or “all-natural” supplements but actually contain highly concentrated synthetic substances. The products are sold in various gas stations, smoke shops and convenience stores.
“These products are really dangerous and basically act like synthetic opioids, and I have already heard from parents whose kids have become addicted to these products sold over the counter across the state,” Attorney General Mayes said. “The Legislature passed the Arizona Kratom Consumer Protection Act to keep dangerous products off the shelves and out of kids’ hands. Companies that ignore this law and push these drugs into Arizona communities are harming public health and safety.”
Under Arizona’s Kratom Consumer Protection Act, retailers cannot do any of the following:
Mayes said her office is looking into reported cases of stores selling these products to minors. She added that the state’s kratom law is difficult to enforce and needs to be more strict.
“In its current form, Arizona’s kratom law asks prosecutors to clear a high-bar just to prove a misdemeanor,” said Attorney General Mayes. “Most law enforcement agencies simply don’t have the labs, experts, or budget to do that on a routine basis.”
Mayes said she plans to work with legislators to improve the law and increase penalties for offenders when the next session gets underway in January. She gave some advice to consumers in the meantime:
Anyone who experiences an adverse reaction when using kratom or 7-OH products should seek medical attention right away. Poison control can be reached at 1-800-222-1222.

If you’re living with diabetes, you likely spend a lot of time planning what goes on your plate. But what about what you pour into your glass or mug? Drinks are easy to overlook. Yet, they can also have a big impact on your blood sugar. On the flip side, not drinking enough can also be a problem, as dehydration may contribute to high blood sugar.
Luckily, there are plenty of blood sugar–friendly beverages out there. One of our favorite sugar-free beverages is tea, which happens to be the second most popular beverage in the world after water. Tea offers loads of health benefits, and better blood sugar is one of them.
With all the different types of teas to choose from, you may be wondering which are the best ones to drink for blood sugar management. To find out, we asked dietitians. Here’s what they told us.
Delicate, earthy green tea is consistently linked to a host of health benefits, including better blood sugar. In fact, research has found that it may help reduce fasting blood glucose and improve insulin sensitivity in people with diabetes. What makes it so effective? “The gut houses trillions of microbes that influence blood sugar levels,” says Kimberley Rose-Francis, RDN, CDCES, LD, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator in private practice in Florida. “An imbalanced gut microbiota can lead to decreased glucose tolerance and insulin resistance. Green tea is rich in polyphenols, which are small plant-based compounds associated with various health benefits, including improvements in gut health.”
For a healthy afternoon pick-me-up, brew some soothing Orange-Ginger Tea. Or, enjoy a cup of our no-sugar-added Ginger-Lemon Tea.
Although green and black tea look and taste quite different, they both come from the Camellia sinensis plant. So, it makes sense that they share many of the same potential health benefits. That includes supporting better blood sugar. While there is not as much research on the benefits of black tea for blood glucose management, one review study reports that it may aid in glucose metabolism and improve the body’s sensitivity to its own insulin. Researchers aren’t sure exactly why. However, they note black tea’s abundant polyphenols may slow the digestion and absorption of sugars from food. This, in turn, may protect against weight gain, which is a powerful trigger for type 2 diabetes.
We don’t have to tell you how comforting a cup of black tea is. But it’s also our favorite tea for energy. For an afternoon pick-me-up, try it iced in this zippy Peach Iced Tea.
“Ginger is well-known for its ability to relieve nausea, but it may also help improve blood sugar levels when crushed and brewed into a fragrant tea,” says Rose-Francis. “Research indicates that ginger contains nearly 40 antioxidant compounds, which can be beneficial for treating various inflammatory conditions and may positively impact blood sugar levels over time.”
“Since chronically elevated blood sugar can lead to inflammation, ginger’s anti-inflammatory compounds could be considered a beneficial functional food for achieving better blood sugar balance,” she adds. Beyond the anti-inflammatory properties of ginger, this flavorful root may also help inhibit the absorption of carbohydrates, regulate glucose metabolism and protect the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas.
You may have noticed that ginger already plays a starring role in several recipes in this article. However, if you’re a purist, try our simple Ginger Tea recipe. All you need is water and a few slices of fresh ginger.
Cinnamon is more than a beloved baking spice. It can also be brewed into a delicious tea. “Cinnamon has been studied for its potential benefits of enhancing insulin function and supporting blood sugar,” says Vandana Sheth, RDN, CDCES, FAND, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator specializing in plant-based nutrition. “It’s a naturally sweet flavored tea without added sugar, and a good option for those with diabetes.” Like ginger, cinnamon is rich in antioxidants that tackle the chronic inflammation that can make it harder to manage your blood sugar. In fact, several studies have shown that cinnamon powder may help lower blood glucose in people with and without diabetes. And one older study found that cinnamon tea may help reduce blood glucose in people without diabetes.
You can easily brew a cup by steeping cinnamon sticks in water. Or, if you’re craving creamy comfort, combine it with black tea and other spices in a spicy cup of chai tea.
From better brain health to less heart disease, turmeric boasts a long list of health benefits. Research reveals that it may also reduce blood glucose and help with weight management. What makes it so powerful? Turmeric contains an active compound called curcumin, which is a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. And, as you’ve already learned, inflammation and higher blood sugar often go hand-in-hand. No wonder researchers credit curcumin’s blood sugar–managing powers to its anti-inflammatory action.
While you can always brew a simple bag of turmeric tea, there are all kinds of creative ways to use it, like this iced Anti-Inflammatory Golden Tonic. It does contain a touch of honey, but you can feel free to omit it for a sugar-free, blood-sugar-friendly drink.
Relaxing with a cup of tea isn’t just a healthy, flavorful way to hydrate. Research reveals that some types of tea can do good things for your blood sugar. And dietitians agree! According to dietitians, green, black, ginger, cinnamon and turmeric teas are the best teas to drink for better blood sugar. For optimal blood sugar management, choose unsweetened teas or add a squeeze of citrus for natural sweetness. So, what are you waiting for? Get your teapot ready. It’s time to start sipping!
Echinacea is a popular herbal supplement people often reach for during the cold season, but its effects go beyond the immune system.
Echinacea is best known for helping your immune system respond to viruses. Some people take echinacea supplements when they feel a cold coming on, although research on its effectiveness is mixed. Several studies suggest that it may help alleviate respiratory symptoms. However, more research is needed.
Echinacea has anti-inflammatory compounds that may help calm skin redness, itching, and breakouts. Early research has shown potential benefits for conditions like:
Some small studies look promising, but more research is still needed—especially in humans.
Echinacea contains plant compounds that may help your body dial down inflammation. A few preliminary studies show it may help:
Human research is limited, but echinacea has a long history of traditional use for pain relief.
Some small human trials suggest echinacea may have a calming effect. Participants taking 40 to 80 milligrams (mg) of echinacea saw improvements in:
These findings are early and not definitive, but they highlight a potential mental health benefit beyond immunity.
Echinacea contains compounds called caffeic acid derivatives that may influence how your body absorbs glucose. Early research suggests potential benefits related to blood sugar management. However, this area remains under investigation.
Native American communities have utilized echinacea for generations due to its healing properties. Today, it’s still used in many forms, and its traditional uses go far beyond immune support.
Traditionally, echinacea was used for:
Traditional practices have guided echinacea use for generations, and although research is ongoing, there isn’t quite enough modern evidence to confirm these effects.
It’s best to review supplement labels with a healthcare provider to discuss any potential interactions with other supplements or medications. It’s also vital that you carefully read the ingredient list and nutrition facts panel of a supplement to know which ingredients are included.
If you’re exploring herbal options with overlapping benefits, you may also see:
Always use only one supplement at a time for a specific goal, and consult with a healthcare provider or pharmacist before use.
From Tokyo to Monaco, powdered green tea is winning over fans of healthy drinks. The Principality now boasts several places where the ancient beverage can be enjoyed.
In recent years, matcha has become the trendiest drink, driven by global hype. Monaco has been quick to join the movement: from chains like Starbucks to the most prestigious establishments including the Fairmont and Cédric Grolet Monte-Carlo, as well as specialised shops like Superboba, the Principality has gone green.
Matcha appeals first and foremost for its health benefits. Rich in antioxidants and theine, it offers a gradual energy boost without the jitteriness of coffee. L-theanine, an amino acid present in matcha, allows caffeine to be released slowly. The result: a stimulating effect that lasts for several hours without an energy crash. (Be sure to limit consumption to two cups per day maximum.)
The Japanese speciality requires a meticulous process. Tea plants are deprived of light for several weeks before harvest. This technique alters the aromatic compounds and gives matcha its characteristic umami profile (the fifth basic taste along with sweet, salty, sour and bitter). The leaves are then ground between two stone wheels. This stage determines the fineness of the vivid jade green powder.
Traditional matcha requires special utensils: a bowl (chawan), a bamboo whisk (chasen) and a tea spatula. The method: sift a level teaspoon of matcha into the bowl, pour in 5 cl of water heated to 70°C, then whisk energetically in a W motion until a foam forms.
For a matcha latte, it’s simpler. Just mix the matcha with a little hot water, whisk it, then add frothed milk. Oat milk is particularly popular, but coconut milk can be used for a sweeter version.
In the Principality, matcha’s clientele has radically changed: “In the beginning, most of my customers were Asian. Now, with the trend effect, I sell it to a much wider public,” noted Sharon, who offers exclusively organic matcha in her shops on Boulevard des Moulins and Rue Princesse Caroline. The democratisation is reflected in people’s preferences too: “Matcha with oat milk is what’s most in demand in Monaco,” Alessandro, barista at Costadoro Social Coffee, said. He will continue preparing them through April–May, the period of highest demand.
Luxury establishments are also following the trend. At Cédric Grolet Monte-Carlo, Raphaël Solakyan, manager of the tea room, does not compromise on quality: “It’s ceremonial-grade matcha [a superior matcha grade], imported directly from Japan.” The drink varies according to taste: cold with coconut milk for a softer version, or hot with cow’s milk for a creamier result. “The pairing with the house pastries, particularly the pear pastry, works especially well,” Raphaël Solakyan explained, who has noticed a real enthusiasm for the drink. Customers come to enjoy authentic Japanese matcha in a refined setting. It’s so successful that the drink has become a staple of the menu.

But behind the enthusiasm lies a concerning reality. “Matcha runs out quickly. It’s becoming tricky to keep offering it,” warned Sharon, manager of Superboba. Japan, the world’s leading producer and exporter, experienced an unprecedented shortage in 2024. Some historic brands sold out their collections in record time. They had to raise prices and limit purchases to one item per person. Yet Japanese production tripled between 2010 and 2023, increasing from 1,471 to 4,176 tonnes according to the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture. But global demand is exploding faster than production capacity. The country faces several constraints: lack of agricultural space, the need to standardise certain cultivars ideal for matcha, and above all a dramatic decrease in the number of producers. Numbers fell from 53,000 in 2000 to just 12,353 in 2020.
In Monaco, the matcha phenomenon has created unfair competition. Sharon sounded the alarm: “Other businesses, dark kitchens, don’t follow Monegasque regulations. They deliver in plastic cups. We make the effort to follow the rules,” she says.
Regulatory compliance has a cost, notably aesthetic, in a market where image plays a crucial role. “I deliver in recyclable cardboard cups. In photos, it obviously looks less good,” Sharon said. It’s a dilemma for the shopkeeper who refuses to compromise on compliance with the rules, even if it harms the photogenic appeal of her products on social media, where the trendy drink is showcased. Beyond regulatory issues, Sharon also warns consumers of a more fundamental concern: the quality of the product being sold.
Other countries, such as China, have begun producing matcha. The problem: these teas are made industrially, without following the rigorous process established by Japanese producers over centuries. They are indeed much cheaper, but of significantly lower quality. And since there is no strict international control, it is possible to call all sorts of derivatives “matcha”, creating dangerous confusion for consumers. This is precisely what Monegasque shopkeepers like Sharon fight against daily, relying on traceability, organic certification and direct imports from Japan. “Consumers still don’t really know how to tell the difference between real quality matcha and fake matcha from China. There’s a real need for education on this subject,” Sharon warned.
In Monaco, the Japanese drink seems to have firmly taken hold. Establishments that prioritise quality and transparency are counting on a clientele that is increasingly knowledgeable and quality-conscious.

Maloti Terangpi’s journey begins in Dakiram Ronghang, a remote village tucked inside Karbi Anglong’s Rongmongve Block in Assam. For years, she cultivated tea on her small plot of land, selling raw leaves at just ₹15 per kilogram.
Every day, she and other women in her village carried heavy sacks of freshly plucked leaves across a narrow footbridge over the Nadia River—the only connection to the nearest market. Transportation was slow, unsafe, and exhausting.
Despite her hard work, Maloti earned barely ₹8,000 a month, with little hope of breaking out of the low-profit cycle.
Her turning point arrived on April 10, 2025, when she joined the Udyamini Rural Women Entrepreneurship Programme (RWEP) with an initial investment of only ₹4,000.
Soon after, Transform Trade’s technical partner, Grassroot Tea Corporation (GTC), conducted a series of Focus Group Discussions in the Dolamara area.
The conversations revealed a simple truth: women like Maloti had land, skill, and determination but lacked processing technology, market access, and opportunities to move up the value chain.
To bridge this gap, GTC supported Maloti and 11 other women to form a cluster and established a home-based, handcrafted green tea processing unit inside their own village.
For the first time, tea processing shifted from faraway factories to their households, eliminating transportation barriers and cutting dependence on middlemen. What once felt impossible—producing their own high-value tea—became achievable within walking distance of their homes.
Through intensive training under the Dolamara Cluster, Maloti learned every step of handcrafted green tea production: identifying ideal plucking standards, mastering steaming and rolling techniques, ensuring proper drying, and maintaining strict moisture control.
She and the other women were also trained in regenerative farming practices, learning to make NADEP compost and natural biopesticides from locally available materials. This helped them grow chemical-free leaves, reduce input costs, and improve the long-term health of their tea gardens.
Today, Maloti produces Premium Karbi Artisanal Green Tea—an elegant, carefully crafted product made from the first four days of new leaf growth. It takes 5 kilograms of raw leaves to make just 1 kilogram of finished tea, which now sells for ₹450 per kg.
This shift from selling raw leaves to producing a value-added product has transformed her income potential. Her goal—to earn ₹2 lakh annually—no longer feels distant.
More importantly, Maloti has earned dignity, confidence, and recognition as a rural woman entrepreneur. Her story shows how access to technology, skill development, and local processing can redefine possibilities for women in remote regions.
Maloti is one among hundreds of Rural Women Entrepreneurs (RWEs) who will participate in the Rural Udyamita Conference 2025 on December 12 at NEDFi, Guwahati.
The event will bring together women like her—leaders of micro-enterprises, tea growers, weavers, artisans, farmers, and innovators—who are driving silent but powerful transformations in their communities.
The conference is organised by the Council for Social and Digital Development (CSDD), Digital Empowerment Foundation, North East Development Foundation, and Unifiers Social Ventures.
It serves as a national platform where policymakers, development experts, financial institutions, and grassroots entrepreneurs come together to deliberate on what a sustainable and supportive ecosystem for rural women should look like.
Co-organised by the Udyamini RWEP Collaborative and supported by UNDP and the Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission (ASRLM), the event highlights the role of digital inclusion, decentralised production systems, and collective action in shaping the next generation of rural entrepreneurship.
For women like Maloti, the conference is more than an event—it is a celebration of resilience, innovation, and the belief that even from the most remote corners of Assam, powerful stories of change can emerge and inspire the nation.

The researchers examined 31 healthy adults aged 60 to 75 and found that regular peanut consumption increased overall cerebral blood flow by about 3.6 percent, with blood circulation in gray matter rising by around 4.5 percent. According to the report, specific areas linked to cognitive control showed even sharper improvement.
Blood flow in the frontal lobe increased by 6.6 percent, while the temporal lobe rose by 4.9 percent, regions that strongly influence memory and reasoning skills.
MRI scans and verbal memory tests conducted throughout the 16-week study phase demonstrated modest improvement in recall ability, with participants recognising more words during the peanut-supplemented period.
The research team highlighted that enhanced blood flow may explain this cognitive boost, since the brain depends on oxygen and nutrient delivery to maintain performance. As noted in the study, better vascular health is increasingly considered a protector against degenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.
Peanuts contain a beneficial mix of protein, healthy fats, antioxidants, polyphenols, and the amino acid L-arginine, which plays a key role in regulating blood vessel function. The report notes that skin-roasted peanuts were intentionally selected because the skin contains additional fiber and antioxidant compounds that may enhance vascular benefits.
During the peanut phase, participants also experienced improved systolic blood pressure, dropping by about 5 mmHg, a change that can reduce long-term cardiovascular risk. Experts stress that heart health and brain health are closely interconnected.
While the findings are encouraging, researchers clarify that peanuts should not be viewed as a cure. Rather, they may offer an accessible dietary choice to support long-term cognitive well-being.
External specialists reviewing the study noted both value and limitations.
Speaking to Medical News Today, neuroscientist Dr Tommy Wood described the findings as part of growing evidence that polyphenol-rich foods can enhance vascular function. He praised the crossover design but emphasised that a larger participant pool is needed to strengthen statistical certainty. He suggested alternatives like dark chocolate and berries for those unable to eat peanuts.
Internal medicine physician Dr Edmond Hakimi also told Medical News Today that the results were “promising” because they involved objective MRI-based measurements, yet reinforced the need for wider population studies. The research was funded by The Peanut Institute Foundation, though the authors maintained control over study design and analysis.
While cutting-edge drugs remain uncertain and costly, affordable foods such as peanuts could offer a meaningful tool in preserving cognitive function.
A handful of roasted peanuts a day may do more for brain performance than many overpriced brain-boosting products.
As science untangles the link between nutrition and cognition, the message is refreshingly simple: You may not need a supplement bottle to protect your memory. You may just need the right nut.

Matcha has skyrocketed in the past year or so as the most popular drink on cafe menus. The green lattes that are all over your social media feed actually have roots in ancient Japanese history, but may soon vanish. Since the tea has a reputation for less jitters, more antioxidants, and other health benefits than traditional caffeine sources, it has seen an unprecedented increase in popularity around the globe. As a result of this sudden trajectory, though, and the conditions under which the tea is grown, supplies may soon run out. Read on to learn more about the rumored matcha shortage.
Matcha is a stone-ground powder made from green tea leaves that are grown in the shade. Matcha has been used for centuries in Japan in traditional tea ceremonies. The tradition of drinking matcha was built on four principles: harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility.
Due to high concentrations of chlorophyll, L-theanine, and of course, caffeine, the drink is heavily praised as a “superfood” that has various health benefits. The drink is also praised as a coffee alternative for those who experience jitters or a “crash” from traditional caffeinated beverages, with added cognitive benefits for focus and mood from the l-theanine content. The high chlorophyll content is a product of the leaves being grown in the shade. These benefits have resulted in an international explosion in demand in the past two years, with most cafes serving strawberry, lavender, pumpkin spice, and even banana bread matcha lattes.

In conversation with The New York Times, Matchaful owner Hanah Habes explained the causes of the shortage and related ‘knockoff’ teas. There are different “grades” of matcha quality, including ceremonial and culinary grades. Ceremonial grade matcha, which is also known as “first flush” matcha, is from the first harvest in the spring. Since in previous planting seasons, the demand for the tea leaves was much less than it is right now, supplies of ceremonial-grade matcha are set to run out.
Remy Morimoto Park, commonly known by her online usernames Veggiekins and Matcha Mommy, is a vegan food, matcha, and lifestyle social media creator. She is also the author of a cookbook and owns a matcha business. Her matcha business, Frauth, collaborated earlier this year with Hoboken-born salad chain, Alfalfa, on vanilla matcha bliss balls. In her cookbook Sesame, Soy, Spice , she includes a recipe for a “Dirty Jersey Diner Plate” reflecting on nostalgic experiences at New Jersey diners as a child growing up in Fort Lee.
She started Frauth in 2024, after six years in the making. About the growth of the matcha industry, she said, “At that time, matcha was gaining popularity but it was nowhere near as mainstream as it is today. I think what has changed the most is the general understanding of what matcha is and the appreciation for a higher quality of matcha. ” She continued that the growing understanding of different matcha qualities today was not the case six years ago, and consumers’ appreciation for quality is beneficial to matcha brands like hers.
Remy is part Japanese, so matcha was introduced to her early on, and it was regularly served with wagashi, or sweet treat,s and after meals. She was motivated to create her brand partially because she found it difficult to find high-quality tea in the States, having been “spoiled” by her grandmother, who brought back tea from her favorite regions in Japan.
“The matcha shortage is already in effect. All businesses will be impacted a bit because there is now an increased demand for matcha, but the available quantity has not increased [in fact, this year’s harvest yield was negatively impacted because of the weather conditions]. Prices will increase and as the average consumer becomes more aware of higher quality matcha, the demand for higher grades of matcha [typically more limited in yield per year] will also increase,” Remy shared with The Hoboken Girl, “Essentially, everyone wants to get their hands on matcha but the industry cannot handle the demand and it will take some time before that is possible. I don’t think it will impact the East Coast specifically differently, but those in the US could be subject to price increases due to tariffs and import fees.”
“Because higher quality matcha is harvested only once a year, first flush/harvest matcha will not be easy to secure. There is a fixed quantity available per year,” she added.
Given her platform, Remy has made countless latte (and food) recipes using the tea powder, but some standouts include her Matcha Jelly Latte, Cantaloupe Matcha Latte, and, of course, the seasonally appropriate Pumpkin Spice Matcha Latte.
While the powder is a superfood, many coffee shops in the area have gotten creative with the different ways the tea can be incorporated into a decadent latte. The drinks are made similarly to espresso lattes, adding a shot of matcha as the caffeine source. The Hive, Mojo, Empire Coffee + Tea, Hidden Grounds, The Little Local, Hey Coffee People, and Jane’s Matcha have all integrated matcha lattes into their menus with multiple spins on the drink. Some examples include the Strawberry Matcha Latte at Hey Coffee People, Hidden Grounds’ Rose and Coconut Matcha Elixirs, and the Lavender Matcha Latte at Empire. Matcha can also be used in place of espresso in your favorite seasonal beverages, including a Spiced Brown Sugar Matcha at Mojo Coffee and the Iced Maple Berry Matcha at Lil’ Dove.
Abbe Rivers of Empire Coffee and Tea shared that while she has not felt the impact of the shortage yet, the signs can be seen in Los Angeles, where cafes are being hit especially hard. While Abbe is not sure about if or when a shortage will be felt, the already-expensive product is getting pricier. “Price increases will be based on both supply shortages and tariffs. We’ll be looking at approximately a 10-20% price increase, which we will unfortunately have to implement once our prices go up. We love our customers and will do our best to absorb as much as possible,” Abbe said.

One Jersey City company entirely dedicated to matcha drinks, Jane’s Matcha, first launched during the 2024 Riverview Farmer’s Market. Jane first discovered matcha as a high school student when she worked as a boba-rista at the now-closed Grumpy Bobas in Somerville. She realized that the tea worked better for her than other caffeinated beverages, and cited the meditative process of whisking the tea that she would look forward to every morning. She wanted to bring high-quality, hand-whisked matcha beverages to her neighborhood in Jersey City, which is where she first applied to bring her new passion project.
Soon after her first setup at the Riverview Farmers Market, the shortage began to show itself. “The matcha shortage has impacted this year in a lot of different ways. I had to take off the first few weeks of the farmers market season because the producers we’d worked with the previous year were extremely low on their spring harvests and were waiting for 2025’s harvest season to replenish their stock,” Jane said. Explaining the different types of matcha and the different ways each will be impacted, she said, “The shortage is heavily impacting single-origin, first spring harvest. Essentially, higher-quality matcha that can only be picked once a year. Unfortunately, the pricing increases have already started for high-quality matcha, but we’re trying to keep our cafe prices as consistent as we can.”

Other types of hand-whisked green tea, including hojicha, a darker roasted green tea usually made with sencha or bancha tea leaves, also appear on Jane’s regular menu. The cacao-ish flavored drink may grow in popularity as a result of the shortage, according to Jane. One of the core principles of Jane’s Matcha, she said, is keeping ingredients as local as possible. One of her favorite beverages on the menu, and most popular, is the Honeycomb Matcha. For the drink, Jane uses honeycomb from the Riverview Garden in Jersey City Heights, Beekeeper, Roger. Seasonal drinks like the Peaches + Cream and Blueberry Matcha drinks have used local produce from RH farms. About upcoming winter beverages and broadening tea variations to adjust to the shortage impacts, Jane said, “I’m excited to try out some new holiday drinks as well, especially with hojicha! I think the natural, nutty, roasted flavor of hojicha pairs well with more cozy flavors that we’ll start to test in the upcoming months.”

According to ADM’s Sleep, Stress & Mood Report, 76% of global consumers agree that sleep quality affects how they feel throughout the day, and 74% believe it influences their overall quality of life.
However, less than half reported usually feeling refreshed upon waking, and nearly half described feeling sluggish or tired during the day — factors that can affect mood, stress resilience, and sustained energy levels.
In fact, only around two-thirds feel satisfied with their mental wellness.
While many are addressing this through exercise or improving sleep habits, just over 20% are turning to dietary changes or supplements as a solution.
“This points to a meaningful opportunity for functional food and beverage brands to support consumers in closing the sleep satisfaction gap. Convenient formats, such as ready-to-drink (RTD) teas, gummies, smoothies, snack bars, baked goods, and tablets, that meet high sensory expectations, are particularly appealing as they encourage regular use,” Lois Mo, Marketing Director for Health & Wellness, APAC at ADM, told NutraIngredients.
“By offering tailored wellness solutions that help improve restfulness, brands can positively influence consumers’ day-to-day mood and overall mental well-being.”
Across regions, almost one in three consumers report feeling “extremely or very stressed” on a daily basis, highlighting the impact of modern routines on sleep quality and daily functioning.
At the same time, growing awareness of the connection between sleep, stress, and mood is opening opportunities for functional nutrition products that address these concerns simultaneously.
“Consumers are motivated not only by immediate benefits, such as reduced stress or increased energy, but also by long-term objectives like improved physical health and quality of life,” said Mo.
Additionally, ADM’s report shows that 62% of global consumers believe digestive health is directly linked to better sleep, accelerating interest in gut-brain axis ingredients across Asia-Pacific (APAC).
This places biotics in a strong position as multifunctional solutions that support better sleep, promote emotional regulation, and cater to broader wellness goals.
In China, respondents showed the highest interest in probiotics/postbiotics (43%) and prebiotics/fiber (45%), significantly above the global average of 20%, reflecting regional curiosity about the role of gut health in mood, stress, and sleep.
In South East Asia (SEA), consumers also increasingly view sleep through a well-being lens. For instance, in Malaysia (31%) and Thailand (34%), fatigue, stress, hydration, and sleep quality are often linked to visible skin concerns such as dark under-eyes and dryness.
“This wider sleep-stress-skin connection has driven interest in everyday functional formats, such as juice, coffee, tea, and other hydration-driven categories, which easily incorporate biotics and postbiotics. These formats offer a simple, habitual way for consumers to support both restfulness and overall well-being,” said Mo.

Mo added that consumers are increasingly seeking ingredients that support better rest. Although traditional botanicals, vitamins, and minerals continue to play a major role, they are looking beyond familiar solutions.
“Chamomile and lavender are popular botanicals known for their calming effects, and magnesium and B, C, and D vitamins help support overall mental and physical wellness. Melatonin remains widely recognized for its role in regulating sleep specifically.”
A growing body of clinical research indicate that resilient postbiotics, such as Lactobacillus gasseri CP2305, may improve sleep quality, efficiency, and duration, while also supporting emotional well-being by reducing stress.
Traditional probiotics are highly sensitive to heat, moisture, and oxygen, which limits their use. In contrast, heat-stable postbiotics such as Lactobacillus gasseri CP2305 retain their health-promoting properties without refrigeration, enabling broad applications across supplement and functional food products.
Importantly, brands can meet rising demand for sleep and mood support by offering convenient, appealing products that fit into busy lifestyles.
Based on ADM’s report, RTD teas are the top format consumers want for sleep support, closely followed by baked goods like cookies, with melatonin and chamomile remaining highly trusted ingredients.
“Regional preferences further shape opportunity areas. In SEA, Malaysia favours formats such as juices, smoothies, dairy drinks, and supplements, while Thailand leans toward bottled water, coffee, tea, and smoothies,” said Mo.
There is also strong trust in expert recommendations among consumers in this region, especially Malaysia and Thailand, where healthcare professionals are top influencers, underscoring the need for clinically supported claims and transparent communication.
“Rising concerns related to stress, hydration, appearance, and sleep quality indicate strong demand for multifunctional products. Brands that can deliver holistic, science-backed solutions that address multiple needs simultaneously will be well positioned to stand out,” Mo concluded.

—The GREEN TEA Room JFOODO PODCAST launches December 8—
The Japan Food Product Overseas Promotion Center (JFOODO) has been engaging U.S. millennials since 2017. In FY2025, they will hold two Japanese tea workshops in the United States (U.S.) as part of their efforts to promote understanding of the high quality that Japanese tea leaves boast and to further expand the Japanese tea fan community.

Japanese tea, a key export item targeted by the Japanese government for its export value goal of 5 trillion yen by 2030, is one of Japan’s representative agricultural, forestry, and fishery products. Demand is growing, driven by factors such as rising health consciousness and increased interest in Japanese cuisine overseas, particularly in the United States. Japan’s global tea exports from January to August 2025 totaled 38 billion yen, already significantly surpassing the 36.3 billion yen recorded last year.
With the growing demand for matcha, this workshop aims to explore the expanding world of Japanese tea. Participants will learn how to utilize matcha according to its quality while also deepening their understanding of the appeal of Japanese tea, which encompasses a wide variety of tea types beyond matcha, including roasted green tea (hojicha), sencha, and gyokuro.
The workshop will offer opportunities to learn about various Japanese teas, including the characteristics of roasted green tea—which has been gaining attention in the U.S. in recent years—and brown rice tea (genmaicha), a traditional Japanese blended tea. Additionally, activities such as matcha preparation demonstrations and tea tasting sessions (Chakabuki) will be conducted. The aim is to boost the fan community by providing opportunities for participants to interact with each other.
The workshop will be held in two cities: Los Angeles and New York. The Los Angeles workshop will feature Zach Mangan, owner of the Japanese tea specialty cafe Kettl, as an instructor. Additionally, talk sessions are scheduled with wellness creator and founder of Frauth Matcha Remy Morimoto Park, as well as Alyssa Antoci, lifestyle creator. The event will be streamed and recorded on Instagram Live; all are welcome to participate.
