Form Following Function: Japanese Tea Boxes as Interior Decoration

The humble tea box got its start in the 1800s as a finely crafted container for storing and shipping green tea leaves. A century later these were discovered by people who decorated them with fine fabrics to make them enduringly fashionable parts of their homes’ interiors. A new book explores the art and history of the chabako.

A Colorful Twist on Tradition

In mid-October 2025, an event was held to launch a new book—Chabako (The Tea Box), by Masumi Pizer—at a gallery in Kyōbashi in central Tokyo. The Interior Chabako Club, led by Pizer and based in Tokyo’s Shinagawa, used the occasion to show off a variety of its stylish “interior tea boxes,” including a number of new pieces.

The term Interior Chabako is a registered trademark belonging to the club. Chabako were originally tea chests used for storing and transporting tea leaves. The interior versions are an adaptation of these chests for modern use. The chests are wrapped in kimono or obi fabrics, woven fabrics from other parts of the world, and cushion materials, transforming them into decorative items for use in the home. As the book describes them, large chabako can be fitted with casters or wooden legs to become stools or benches, or topped with an acrylic sheet for use as tables or display surfaces. With creative ideas adapted to your lifestyle, chabako make the perfect interior pieces for any room.

Roots in Japan’s Expat Community

Chabako come in more than 20 different sizes, from large chests that can be used as furniture to smaller pieces ideal for use as table-top storage boxes. The concept originated in “fabric-covered chabako” created by foreign residents living in Japan, who wrapped the boxes in favorite fabrics and modified them for use as decorative and functional storage chests.

Pizer fell in love with fabric-covered chabako when she encountered them among Tokyo’s expat community in 1998. The following year, she started classes on decorative chabako, and in 2004, she founded the Interior Chabako Club as a limited company. In 2005 she began offering certified instructor courses. Today, the club has 125 classrooms around the country, with instructors in the United States and Germany.

The original fabric-covered chabako, made by foreigners with close connections to Japan, mostly used traditional Japanese fabrics intended for use in kimonos and obis. It is fair to say that interior chabako take the concept a step further, incorporating the standard Nishijin-ori and Yūzen options along with a variety of traditional fabrics from France, Italy, and beyond. Today, they are attracting growing interest overseas as practical and appealing works of art that can bring colorful accents to interiors.

The World’s Most Durable Storage Chests?

The book also touches on the history of the chabako themselves. The first export of Japanese tea is believed to date back to 1610, when the Dutch East India Company took a transport from Hirado, Nagasaki to Europe. But without durable tea chests, capable of keeping tea leaves fresh and transporting them safely across long and difficult voyages, it is likely that green tea would never have become established throughout Japan and the wider world.

The first chabako date to the Edo period (1603–1868). It was in the early Meiji period (1868–1912) that they reached their present form of a cedar box lined with tin. These modern chests offered vastly improved protection against moisture and insects. Skilled craftsmen produced boxes that were strong enough to last a century or more. By the late nineteenth century, chabako were being exported as desirable products in their own right.

Over time, however, cheap and convenient materials like cardboard and aluminum bags became popular as alternatives for transporting and storing tea, and threatened to make chabako obsolete. Demand plummeted and businesses struggled to find successors as the young generation looked for work elsewhere. One after another, specialist chabako makers closed down, until in 2024, just three remained.

Preserving the Craft for the Next Generation

The book rightly describes chabako, with their more than 150 years of history, as the crystallization of a number of different Japanese craft skills.

The cedar used for the outer frame is generally at least 30 years old. After being exposed to the elements for at least three months, the wood is weighted and dried thoroughly to prevent warping and distortion. Galvanized tin sheets are used for the lining, while corners, joins, and other areas vulnerable to damage are reinforced with thick strips of washi paper. All the materials used in the boxes are painstakingly produced by experienced craftsmen.

The Interior Chabako Club has worked hard to preserve these endangered skills and pass them on to the next generation. This book tells the story of this battle to save valuable traditions for the future.

Shizuoka Prefecture, one of Japan’s top tea regions alongside Uji (Kyoto and surrounding areas) and Sayama (Saitama), is home to Kawane Honchō, known for its famous tea. The club partnered with Maeda Seikanjo, a long-established maker of high-quality chabako, to preserve the craft. In 2010, they submitted a petition to the town’s mayor to keep the small industry of chabako alive and began training young craftspeople to carry the tradition into the future. Maeda Kōbō was established with local government support in 2016, and the company started operations from a new factory in 2020.

A Deluxe Bilingual, Full-Color Book

Pizer’s book features richly colorful photographs showing a diverse selection of interior chabako in all their glory. Many are collaborations with prominent designers and brands, both Japanese and international. The full-size photographic spreads give the book a striking visual impact and make it a joy to look at.

The book also contains seven engaging and informative columns examining the boxes and the culture that has grown up around them, including “Starting a Legacy,” “A Tradition to Enjoy,” and “The Prayer of Pope Francis.”

The author spent her childhood living with her family in London. She later worked for Mitsubishi Corporation and Citibank NA in Tokyo. This book reflects more than 25 years of her passion for chabako and is presented in both Japanese and English text.

EU authorises Kensing’s new plant sterol sourced from sunflowerseeds

The European Union (EU) has approved a new plant sterol sourced from sunflowerseeds produced by US speciality ingredients company Kensing.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)’s approval through its Novel Food application process granted Kensing commercial exclusivity for Sunvasterol in Europe, the company said on 11 November.

Sunflower phytosterols offered food formulators and dietary supplement brands an alternative to traditional soya, rapeseed and pine-based sterols, Kensing said.

“The EFSA approval confirms that sunflower-derived phytosterols deliver a strong cholesterol-lowering benefit, similar to our other EFSA-approved sterols,” said Serge Rogasik, Kensing CEO.

Kensing’s Sunvasterol product is produced from a byproduct of sunflower oil at the company’s facilities in Valencia and Talavera de la Reina, Spain.

Sunvasterol is composed of concentrated phytosterols (primarily beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol and campesterol) in the form of free sterols and sunflower lipid-linked esters. Esterification significantly increases the fat-solubility of plant sterols.

Available as free sterols or fat-soluble esters, Kensing said as well as being used in supplements, the product could be incorporated into fat-containing foods, including margarines and spreads, yogurts, functional dairy drinks, and other dairy products, milk-analogue products, condiments and salad dressings.

Phytosterols are a natural lipid component of oil seeds, grains, nuts, legumes and other plant seeds. They reduce cholesterol by competing with dietary and biliary cholesterol for absorption in the intestines, lowering the amount of cholesterol entering the bloodstream. This absorption inhibition helps to reduce total and LDL-cholesterol levels.

Sunflower phytosterols were supported by EFSA-approved health claims indicating that a daily intake of 1.5g-3.0g could help reduce total and LDL cholesterol by about 7%-12% over 2-3 weeks when incorporated into authorised food categories.

A daily intake of at least 0.8g of plant sterols can help maintain healthy cholesterol levels, according to a May 2012 EC regulation.

Sterols and stanols from soya, pine and other plants had been given EFSA authorisation for their role in helping to lower blood cholesterol since 2000, Kensing said.

In seeking approval for sunflower-based phytosterols with a broader specification for use in food supplements and fortified foods, the company said a full Novel Food dossier had been submitted to EFSA.

Kensing, which operates a sunflower supply network across Spain, Argentina and the USA, said it would increase production capacity to meet increased product demand.

According to its website, Kensing produces a range of speciality ingredients derived from vegetable oils, including plant sterols, natural vitamin E, anionic and amphoteric surfactants, and speciality esters.

USP named a Participating Certifier in Amazon’s new compliance fast-track programme for dietary supplements

In an effort to ensure quality dietary supplements and enhance consumer trust, Amazon recently announced that USP has been selected as a participating certifier in Amazon’s Compliance Fast-Track Program.



This means that supplements bearing the USP Verified Mark are automatically recognised as meeting Amazon’s enhanced safety and quality requirements, eliminating the need for manual submission of documentation and enabling faster, seamless access to Amazon’s market.


“Seventy-five per cent of American consumers use dietary supplements and these consumers are increasingly turning to online marketplaces to purchase products that support their health and well-being.”

The USP Verified Mark serves as a universal seal of quality, which is recognisable to retailers/consumers and indicates that a dietary supplement


  • contains the ingredients listed on the label in the declared strength and amounts
  • does not contain harmful levels of specified contaminants, such as heavy metals and pesticides
  • complies with FDA Good Manufacturing Practices using sanitary and well-controlled processes

Supplements for women’s weight loss

Consumers have long looked to dietary supplements to support their exercise and weight management goals, which often go hand-in-hand. But now that GLP-1 drugs have supercharged the conversation around healthy weight, even more shoppers are hungry for high-quality natural products to help them become fitter, stronger and overall healthier.

Women represent a large slice of this market, and many are asking their local supplement retailers to recommend the best products to meet their unique physiologies and needs. We sent our female Secret Shopper to investigate how one store handled this topic, then had an expert provide additional intel to share in the aisles.  

Natural Foods Merchandiser: As I’m exercising more and moving toward a healthier weight, what supplements are most important? 

Retailer: Great question! The answer kind of depends on your diet. Are you eating lots of protein? That’s super important for fueling exercise. 

Natural Foods Merchandiser: I try to, but I might not always succeed.   

Retailer: Yeah, it’s pretty common for women starting a weight loss journey to fall short on protein, especially if you’re taking a GLP-1 drug that curbs hunger. So, a protein supplement might be smart. There are all kinds of shakes and powders and other cool products that make it easy—and tasty—to get your daily protein fix.

Natural Foods Merchandiser: Super. Any other supplements I should consider?

Retailer: Protein is the most important. Beyond that, I guess it depends on your individual goals and needs.

While a variety of supplements can be beneficial while ramping up exercise and trying to get healthier, a few big ones just can’t be ignored. Protein is No. 1, so I’m glad the retailer mentioned it. Many women think they get enough protein, but they rarely do. For most women, the recommendation is about 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight per day. 

But as more research has been done specifically on females, we’re seeing that we need a little more protein around exercise. To build and maintain muscle, as well as bone, women must be well fed and get sufficient protein.

No. 2 is creatine, which benefits mood, focus, sleep, heart health, cellular metabolism—and getting the most out of your muscles. Any cell that uses energy uses creatine, and nobody consumes enough. You’d have to eat pounds of meat daily, so I suggest supplementing creatine at 5 grams a day. And no, women will not get bloated, gain weight or look like Arnold Schwarzenegger—you’ll just get stronger and recover better from exercise.

Next, focus on gut health, which impacts the entire body. When we start to exercise and change our diets, we can go through transitional periods with our gut. A daily probiotic supplement can enhance the beneficial cultures in your gut, while prebiotic fibers feed those organisms that keep your microbiome healthy. Along with eating fiber-rich foods, a daily prebiotic supplement can help. 

Lastly, get your omega-3s, whether from fish oil, microalgae or another source. Yes, we need EPA and DHA, but we also need other omega-3s such as stearidonic acid and gamma-linoleic acid. I really like Ahiflower, a regeneratively grown plant that offers broad-spectrum omega-3s.
