FDA recalls dozens of supplements containing deadly toxin: What to know

The Food and Drug Administration is expanding a supplement recall of 24 products after finding two more contain a hazardous and potentially fatal toxin.

On Dec. 3, the FDA added New Me and VidaSlim to its list of recalled products containing yellow oleander — a toxin that can cause severe or even fatal neurologic, gastrointestinal and cardiovascular effects.

The recall was initiated earlier this year after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a report of several products that replaced tejocote root or Brazil seed with toxic yellow oleander.

Yellow oleander is “a poisonous plant native to Mexico and Central America and a toxic substance of concern to public health officials,” the FDA said.

The CDC’s report prompted the FDA to open an investigation into dietary supplements included in the report. The agency found several products containing the toxin.

While the agency compiled a list of recalled products, it warns other products labeled as tejocote root — such as Crataegus maxicana, Raiz de Tejocte and Mexican Hawthorn — may also contain yellow oleander.

Several incident reports related to the recall have been received by the FDA, including one serious event.

The FDA suggests customers stop taking these products and dispose of them.

If you have taken any of the recalled products, the FDA suggests reaching out to a health care provider immediately — even if they haven’t been taken recently.
