Specialist Reveals the Most Dangerous Supplement for Your Liver

Green tea herbal extract, has a predominant antioxidant, a catechin known as epigallocatechin gallate which causes liver injury

Renowned hepatologist Dr Cyriac Abby Philips has warned against the use of supplements with green tea extracts that can have deadly effects on your liver. In a social media post recently, Dr Philips, popularly known as the Liver Doc, said these herb extracts lead to life-threatening liver injury.

“This herb and its extract are now the most common upcoming cause of liver injury and liver failure in the West. Herbal and dietary supplement manufacturers ‘claim’ a lot of health benefits of using this herbal extract,” he wrote. “All these ‘claimed’ benefits are not backed by good scientific data. These are blind promotions to increase business and sales of this herbal extract. Even modern medicine pharmaceutical companies add this herbal extract to a lot of their vitamin and nutritional supplements,” Dr Philips added.

According to Dr. Philips, many modern medicine practitioners—especially dermatologists and general practitioners—prescribe tablets and pills that have green tea herbal extract, which has a predominant antioxidant, a catechin known as epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG.
Studies say EGCG – also a common ingredient in diet pills and weight-loss supplements – is not approved for any medical use and is toxic to the liver. Green tea extract is not screened by the Food and Drug Administration for safety or efficacy before entering the market.

According to Dr. Philips, green tea extracts produce a mean extra weight loss of only around a kilogram over 12 weeks.

Also, “Cardiometabolic and cancer claims remain unproven: meta-analyses show modest LDL reduction but no demonstrated impact on hard outcomes; effects disappeared when caffeine-matched controls were used… green tea extracts have no benefits against heart disease or malignancy,” he added.

What is liver toxicity?

Liver toxicity or injury – also known as hepatic injury – refers to any damage or trauma to the liver, which can range from minor lacerations to severe tears and bleeding. It can result from blunt trauma like a car accident or even toxic supplements, which over time reduce the function of your liver.
