Are strawberry and matcha the flavours of the summer? We say yes.

Are strawberry and matcha the flavours of the summer? It might just be so. Here’s what’s behind the hype of this viral ‘Pink Drink,’ and where to find it in Bangkok, too.

Like all previous harbingers of the seasons, it began with Starbucks. A pretty shade of pastel pink meets verdant green — the colours of the famed Strawberry Matcha, or as it might turn out, this summer, too.

Starting as a secret menu order that was the viral Pink Drink blended with a scoop of matcha powder, the photogenic beverage has since been reintroduced as a Teavana mainstay, described as “an endearing latte that offers both umami and fruitiness; two distinctive flavours gorgeously balanced in a cup.”

Two ingredients profusely loved in the city, both are stand-outs of their own accord; especially evident in the latter when the Japanese strawberry season rolls around. Matcha, on the other hand, is an entire food culture that should be appreciated on its own. Rather than just a superfood, it plays a significant part in Japanese culture, especially the respected ritual of a traditional matcha ceremony. Of course, none are strangers to the earthy aroma of matcha, nor oblivious to the list of health benefits that run from increasing energy levels, and improving mental clarity, to being rich in antioxidants.

Where to find Strawberry Matcha in Bangkok

As for your summer ritual, a matcha strawberry will likely be on the menu at a cafe near you. Café Kitsuné serves up a refreshing glass of Strawberry Matcha, with strawberry milk topped with premium matcha. Rolling Roasters also offer their own special blend of matcha with strawberry milk. Lastly, over at brunch haven Luka, you’ll find a version prepared with Matcha green tea, strawberry, milk, and brown sugar.
