Do collagen supplements work for the joints? Spanish specialists respond

By |2024-12-23T18:31:49+02:00December 23, 2024|Dietary Supplements News, News|0 Comments

Santiago Segura, Spanish actor and film director, surprised with his words about collagen supplements in an interview with La Vanguardia, following a question about how he takes care of himself at 59 years old. He explained that for a while he had taken this supplement, but stopped when he read that taking it for bones and joints “is like eating a computer to become smarter.” What is true about this? Why do so many older people take this protein as a supplement? What scientific evidence exists regarding its effects?

In 2021, almost 2 billion euros were spent worldwide on collagen supplements, which are attributed benefits such as improving skin, hair, nails, and especially joints, especially in older people or those with physical wear and tear. Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body and is part of the structures of these mentioned body parts (skin, hair, joints…). “It is part of the connective tissue and that is its function, the connective,” explains Jordi Mestres, a doctor and member of the Catalan Society of Family and Community Medicine.

Supplementation doesn’t make sense. If you have a balanced diet, the necessary intake is already guaranteed”

Jordi MestresDoctor and member of the Catalan Society of Family and Community Medicine

Mestres adds that “supplementation actually doesn’t make sense, because the body breaks down collagen as a supplement and absorbs the amino acids. If you have a balanced diet, the intake is already guaranteed. Also, there is no consensus to claim that taking collagen supplements is appropriate.”

In a similar vein – and even more forcefully -, Julio Basulto, a nutritionist and member of the Nutrition Working Group of semFYC (Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine), takes a stance. He asserts that “since 2011, it is not allowed to attribute alleged benefits on joint health to collagen (actually, hydrolyzed collagen) (this is also the case for glucosamine, chondroitin, or hyaluronic acid). And this is not permitted thanks to a scientific opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). From this, we can conclude that in Europe it is allowed to state that collagen is not useful for maintaining joint health, reducing joint pain, improving joint mobility, or regenerating joints.”

Since 2011, it is not allowed to attribute supposed benefits on joint health to collagen (actually, hydrolyzed collagen)”

There are voices suggesting that this view of the EFSA is outdated, but in the latest review (October 2023) by UpToDate, it “discourages the intake of hydrolyzed collagen, glucosamine, or chondroitin sulfate to prevent or treat rheumatic diseases (disorders in joints, bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and connective tissue),” according to Basulto. UpToDate is a reputable medical reference entity that empowers professionals with the evidence and appropriate recommendations so they can make the best decisions.

These statements contrast with the experience of many older people who take collagen supplements on the recommendation of a healthcare professional. One such case is Elies Solé, who is 77 years old and has been taking collagen for 15 years. “I take it because the orthopedic surgeon recommended it to me. I was starting to have early signs of arthritis, and he said it could help me. I think it has worked quite well for me, especially for my joints, knees, and elbows, which I now have more and more problems with at 77. In addition to the orthopedic surgeon, all the doctors I mention these problems to recommend collagen to me.”

I take it because my orthopedist recommended it to me. I was starting to have early signs of arthritis, and he said it could help me”

Elies Solé77 years

Santiago, aged 77, has been taking it for about five or six years, as recommended by “a friend who had knee surgery. The pharmacist told me that it sells a lot and works very well. The bottle explains that it’s indicated for joint health. I’ve never mentioned it to the doctor, but I’ve had knee pain for a few years, and they told me it could work,” he says. His testimony is similar to that of many other elderly people who take supplements of this product because they have heard about its benefits in some advertisement.

Gloria Sabater, PhD in Pharmacy, specialist in anti-aging medicine, genetics, and nutritional genomics, and member of the Royal Academy of Pharmacy of Catalonia (RAFC), is the technical director of Salengei, a company that manufactures dietary supplements “for healthy aging.” Sabater asserts that many scientific publications speak about the benefits of collagen, citing a 2021 review which concludes that “the loss or defect of collagen can lead to skin aging and other diseases. Collagen treatments have shown effective improvements in skin hydration and elasticity, medical scaffold treatment, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis in many clinical studies.”

Sometimes it is the same doctors or nutritionists who recommend taking them. It is not necessary to undergo previous tests”

Gloria SabaterPhD in Pharmacy

Sabater states that collagen is indicated for “individuals who, due to various circumstances in their lives, whether it be aging, sports injuries, or sometimes purely for aesthetic maintenance reasons, wish to improve the condition of their skin, bones, joints, etc. Sometimes it is doctors or nutritionists themselves who recommend taking them. It is not necessary to undergo previous tests, but it is important to know or have a clear idea of what type of collagen you need.”

According to Dr. Mestres, in some reviews of studies, it is observed that people who take these supplements “also perform other positive actions for their health: they are active, engage in physical activity, do not smoke, are committed to taking care of themselves, and what is probably benefiting them is everything they do in addition to taking collagen.”

According to Sabater, one of the problems is talking about collagen in general. “When discussing joints, skin, or bones, it is not the same type of collagen, nor are there only a few amino acids responsible for all the repair work. That’s why when we talk about effectiveness, we have to consider the context of the formula and its ingredients for a specific application rather than individual ingredients or amino acids.”

Is it indicated in specific cases?

According to the sources consulted, there is a divergence of opinions on the effect of collagen on joints and bones, but is it unanimously indicated in any specific case? “There are diseases that can cause a deficiency, such as scurvy in the past, and also Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, where one of the pathologies is the lack of sufficient collagen production; these individuals present joint hypermobility and ligament laxity, they can easily twist an arm and must take care of their joints,” explains Mestres.

Additionally, the doctor explains that if a person does not have a balanced diet, “what could be useful is a complex with different elements such as vitamins, magnesium, zinc, collagen… but it will always be more advisable, if possible, to have a proper diet that provides us with all the necessary nutrients.”

Indicated foods

According to Gloria Sabater, “to stimulate collagen synthesis, it is essential to consume foods rich in key amino acids such as glycine, proline, and lysine, in addition to having a diet that includes enough vitamins and minerals that act as cofactors in its production”. For example, according to the doctor in pharmacy, “we should eat bone broth, an excellent source of natural collagen and essential amino acids; gelatin, which contains collagen-derived peptides; cuts of meat rich in connective tissue, such as beef stew; pork, or chicken”. Mestres adds to these recommendations eggs (with high nutritional value in their proteins) and gelatinous fish such as sardines, mackerel, or salmon.

Happy Holidays from HealthyWomen – HealthyWomen

By |2024-12-23T18:26:54+02:00December 23, 2024|Fitness News, News|0 Comments

This holiday season, you’re probably busy getting gifts for all the important people in your life. But I bet I can think of someone you left off your list.

Yourself.

We often find ourselves caring for everyone else and putting ourselves last. This year, I’d like you to take some time to think about yourself. I know that might make you uncomfortable because you may not be used to putting yourself first. But you deserve it. Trust me, you do.

Since you probably didn’t put yourself on your own list, I’ve got you on mine. This year, I’d like to give you a gift: The permission to add some TLC for yourself to the long list of things to do for everyone else that you face every day and, in particular, during the holidays.

As you make your to-do list full of tasks and traditions, remember to add a visit to your favorite bakery for a pumpkin muffin, to schedule a massage, or even to just get in bed early and curl up with your favorite book.

The holidays will still happen, whether you stress about them or not. So take a beat, relax — and remember that
taking care of yourself should be a priority for 2025.

Warm and healthy wishes always,

XAG/USD extends recovery near $30 despite Fed supports fewer rate cuts

By |2024-12-23T17:55:06+02:00December 23, 2024|Forex News, News|0 Comments

  • Silver price recovers further to near $29.90 even though US bond yields rise as Fed officials support fewer interest rate cuts in 2025.
  • Soft monthly US PCE inflation raised uncertainty over the Fed’s shallow rate-cut path.
  • Silver price is expected to struggle in an attempt to extend the upward-sloping trendline above $30.00.

Silver price (XAG/USD) extends Friday’s recovery move to near $29.90 in Monday’s European session. The white metal rebounded strongly on Friday from a more than three-month low of $28.75 after the release of the United States (US) Personal Consumption Expenditure Price Index (PCE) data for November, which showed that price pressures grew at a slower pace than expectations.

Core PCE inflation, the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) preferred inflation gauge, rose steadily by 2.8% but slower than estimates of 2.9%. The month-on-month headline and core PCE inflation grew marginally by 0.1%, raising uncertainty over whether the Fed will follow a shallow rate-cut path in 2025, as projected in the Fed’s dot plot from the December policy meeting.

The recent Fed dot plot showed that officials collectively see Federal Fund rates heading to 3.9% by the end of 2025.

Silver prices advanced on Monday even though US Treasury yields remain higher as Federal Reserve (Fed) policymakers support fewer interest rate cuts next year. 10-year US Treasury yields moved higher to near 4.54%. Generally, higher yields on interest-bearing assets weigh on non-yielding assets, such as Silver, as they result in higher opportunity costs for them. The US Dollar Index (DXY), which tracks the Greenback’s value against six major currencies, ticked higher to near 108.00.

On Friday, a string of Fed officials backed a shallow policy-easing approach amid a slowdown in the disinflation trend, better labor market conditions than previously anticipated, and uncertainty over President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming policies.

Silver technical analysis

Silver price recovers to test the breakdown of the upward-sloping trendline near $30.00, which is plotted from the February 29 low of $22.30 on a daily timeframe. The white metal wobbles around the 200-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA), suggesting that the longer-term outlook is uncertain.

The 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) rebounds to near 40.00. A fresh bearish momentum would trigger if it fails to break above that level.

Looking down, the September low of $27.75 would act as key support for the Silver price. On the upside, the 50-day EMA around $30.90 would be the barrier.

Silver FAQs

Silver is a precious metal highly traded among investors. It has been historically used as a store of value and a medium of exchange. Although less popular than Gold, traders may turn to Silver to diversify their investment portfolio, for its intrinsic value or as a potential hedge during high-inflation periods. Investors can buy physical Silver, in coins or in bars, or trade it through vehicles such as Exchange Traded Funds, which track its price on international markets.

Silver prices can move due to a wide range of factors. Geopolitical instability or fears of a deep recession can make Silver price escalate due to its safe-haven status, although to a lesser extent than Gold’s. As a yieldless asset, Silver tends to rise with lower interest rates. Its moves also depend on how the US Dollar (USD) behaves as the asset is priced in dollars (XAG/USD). A strong Dollar tends to keep the price of Silver at bay, whereas a weaker Dollar is likely to propel prices up. Other factors such as investment demand, mining supply – Silver is much more abundant than Gold – and recycling rates can also affect prices.

Silver is widely used in industry, particularly in sectors such as electronics or solar energy, as it has one of the highest electric conductivity of all metals – more than Copper and Gold. A surge in demand can increase prices, while a decline tends to lower them. Dynamics in the US, Chinese and Indian economies can also contribute to price swings: for the US and particularly China, their big industrial sectors use Silver in various processes; in India, consumers’ demand for the precious metal for jewellery also plays a key role in setting prices.

Silver prices tend to follow Gold’s moves. When Gold prices rise, Silver typically follows suit, as their status as safe-haven assets is similar. The Gold/Silver ratio, which shows the number of ounces of Silver needed to equal the value of one ounce of Gold, may help to determine the relative valuation between both metals. Some investors may consider a high ratio as an indicator that Silver is undervalued, or Gold is overvalued. On the contrary, a low ratio might suggest that Gold is undervalued relative to Silver.

Euro struggles to gather recovery momentum

By |2024-12-23T16:34:23+02:00December 23, 2024|Forex News, News|0 Comments

  • EUR/USD holds slightly above 1.0400 after posting gains on Friday.
  • The upbeat risk mood could help the pair hold its ground.
  • Trading conditions could remain thin heading into the Christmas break.

Following the sharp decline seen after the Federal Reserve’s policy announcements midweek, EUR/USD staged a rebound and closed in positive territory on Friday. The pair struggles to preserve its recovery momentum early Monday but manages to hold slightly above 1.0400.

Euro PRICE Last 7 days

The table below shows the percentage change of Euro (EUR) against listed major currencies last 7 days. Euro was the weakest against the US Dollar.

USD EUR GBP JPY CAD AUD NZD CHF
USD   0.84% 0.47% 1.99% 1.06% 1.71% 2.00% 0.17%
EUR -0.84%   -0.32% 1.26% 0.28% 1.03% 1.23% -0.61%
GBP -0.47% 0.32%   1.44% 0.60% 1.35% 1.53% -0.29%
JPY -1.99% -1.26% -1.44%   -0.93% -0.27% 0.04% -1.70%
CAD -1.06% -0.28% -0.60% 0.93%   0.70% 0.92% -0.89%
AUD -1.71% -1.03% -1.35% 0.27% -0.70%   0.19% -1.62%
NZD -2.00% -1.23% -1.53% -0.04% -0.92% -0.19%   -1.81%
CHF -0.17% 0.61% 0.29% 1.70% 0.89% 1.62% 1.81%

The heat map shows percentage changes of major currencies against each other. The base currency is picked from the left column, while the quote currency is picked from the top row. For example, if you pick the Euro from the left column and move along the horizontal line to the US Dollar, the percentage change displayed in the box will represent EUR (base)/USD (quote).

The improving risk sentiment and the softer-than-forecast inflation data from the US made it difficult for the US Dollar (USD) to find demand on Friday. Congress’ approval of a stopgap spending bill late Friday triggered a rally in Wall Street’s main indexes and dragged US Treasury bond yields lower.

The core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index, the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) preferred gauge of inflation, rose 0.1% on a monthly basis in November, the US Bureau of Economic Analysis reported on Friday. This reading followed the 0.3% increase recorded in October and came in below the market expectation of 0.2%.

In an interview with the Financial Times (FT) on Monday, European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde repeated that they are getting very close to the stage when they can declare that they have sustainably brought inflation to the medium-term target of 2%.

The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index for December will be featured in the US economic calendar on Monday. Meanwhile, US stock index futures were last seen rising between 0.3% and 0.7% on the day. In case risk flows continue to dominate the action in the second half of the day, the USD could have a hard time gathering strength and allow EUR/USD to hold its ground. Nevertheless, thin trading conditions ahead of the Christmas holiday could limit the pair’s volatility.

EUR/USD Technical Analysis

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) indicator on the 4-hour chart stays slightly below 50, highlighting a lack of bullish momentum.

On the upside, immediate resistance is located at 1.0440 (static level) before 1.0490-1.0500, (100-period Simple Moving Average (SMA), static level). Looking south, supports could be spotted at 1.0400 (static level, round level), 1.0350 (static level) and 1.0300 (static level, round level).

Euro FAQs

The Euro is the currency for the 19 European Union countries that belong to the Eurozone. It is the second most heavily traded currency in the world behind the US Dollar. In 2022, it accounted for 31% of all foreign exchange transactions, with an average daily turnover of over $2.2 trillion a day. EUR/USD is the most heavily traded currency pair in the world, accounting for an estimated 30% off all transactions, followed by EUR/JPY (4%), EUR/GBP (3%) and EUR/AUD (2%).

The European Central Bank (ECB) in Frankfurt, Germany, is the reserve bank for the Eurozone. The ECB sets interest rates and manages monetary policy. The ECB’s primary mandate is to maintain price stability, which means either controlling inflation or stimulating growth. Its primary tool is the raising or lowering of interest rates. Relatively high interest rates – or the expectation of higher rates – will usually benefit the Euro and vice versa. The ECB Governing Council makes monetary policy decisions at meetings held eight times a year. Decisions are made by heads of the Eurozone national banks and six permanent members, including the President of the ECB, Christine Lagarde.

Eurozone inflation data, measured by the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), is an important econometric for the Euro. If inflation rises more than expected, especially if above the ECB’s 2% target, it obliges the ECB to raise interest rates to bring it back under control. Relatively high interest rates compared to its counterparts will usually benefit the Euro, as it makes the region more attractive as a place for global investors to park their money.

Data releases gauge the health of the economy and can impact on the Euro. Indicators such as GDP, Manufacturing and Services PMIs, employment, and consumer sentiment surveys can all influence the direction of the single currency. A strong economy is good for the Euro. Not only does it attract more foreign investment but it may encourage the ECB to put up interest rates, which will directly strengthen the Euro. Otherwise, if economic data is weak, the Euro is likely to fall. Economic data for the four largest economies in the euro area (Germany, France, Italy and Spain) are especially significant, as they account for 75% of the Eurozone’s economy.

Another significant data release for the Euro is the Trade Balance. This indicator measures the difference between what a country earns from its exports and what it spends on imports over a given period. If a country produces highly sought after exports then its currency will gain in value purely from the extra demand created from foreign buyers seeking to purchase these goods. Therefore, a positive net Trade Balance strengthens a currency and vice versa for a negative balance.

Analyst Predicts $6 ADA if Cardano Follows Historical Breakout

By |2024-12-23T16:28:05+02:00December 23, 2024|Crypto News, News|0 Comments

  • Analyst Andrew Griffith also shared a positive outlook for Cardano (ADA), suggesting the token is poised for an upside reversal.
  • Ali Martinez predicts that if ADA follows a similar trajectory to that in 2020, it could extend the rally all the way to $6.

Cardano (ADA), the ninth largest crypto in terms of market capitalization, has been making headlines regarding its volatile price movements lately. Crypto analyst Ali Martinez shared some interesting similarities between ADA price’s behavior in the current market compared to that of the 2020 bull rally.

Crypto Analyst Offers Bullish Cardano Price Prediction

“Back in 2020, the first major correction after the bull rally began happened at the very same time as the correction we are experiencing today,” Martinez shared on X. The analyst suggested that, should this historical pattern hold, ADA might reach a target price of $6, reported CNF.

Recently, the Cardano price movement has been quite volatile. On Monday, December 23, the ADA price declined by 0.57% over the last 24 hours, trading at $0.9008. Earlier, on Sunday, the crypto plunged over 4% in value. This decline was part of a broader sell-off in the market that saw $284.45 million in crypto liquidations today, according to Coinglass data.

Moreover, out of these liquidations, $191.02 million long positions were liquidated, which exacerbated the ongoing crypto market downturn. Also, over the last week, ADA price declined by nearly 17%, a reflection of intensified bearish momentum in the market.

Cardano’s price managed a small rebound for the weekend, having spent so long in a downtrend. ADA recovered from the low of $0.762 on Friday after four days of consecutive losses. Unfortunately, the recovery was short-lived, and prices stalled at $0.997 on Saturday. Meanwhile, renewed declines were seen on Sunday, which pushed Cardano’s price to intraday lows of $0.869, which was close to its 50-day simple moving average.

Nonetheless, Martinez’s insights into ADA price behavior have sparked curiosity among traders and analysts, as the token’s performance appears to mirror its historical patterns. The $6 prediction, while ambitious, highlights the potential impact of market cycles on Cardano price’s long-term trajectory.

Other Bullish Predictions for ADA

Crypto analyst Andrew Griffith also expressed optimism about Cardano price movement in a recent post on X. Highlighting its recent turnaround and attempt to break above $0.9350, Griffith suggested the ADA token is poised for an upside reversal, reported CNF.

“Coming off the bottom of its range, and the nice turnaround followed by the attempt to break above 0.9350 suggests that the Cardano is ready for an upside reversal,” he wrote. Griffith identified the key resistance level at $1.0860, which he referred to as the “official target.”

Cardano’s current trajectory has sparked discussions about its potential for further bullish momentum. However, the situation hasn’t stabilized yet. Today, traders liquidated $1.82 million ADA long positions, which could further worsen the current downtrend.

Información acerca de los autoexámenes de mama

By |2024-12-23T16:25:56+02:00December 23, 2024|Fitness News, News|0 Comments

English

XAU/USD flat lines above $2,600 as traders await fresh catalysts

By |2024-12-23T15:54:27+02:00December 23, 2024|Forex News, News|0 Comments

  • Gold trades flat around $2,625 in Monday’s early Asian session.
  • More cautious approach to monetary easing next year from the Fed drags the Gold price lower.
  • Softer US PCE inflation data, the upturn in China’s Gold demand and geopolitical risks might the downside for XAU/USD.

Gold price (XAU/USD) holds steady near $2,625 during the early Asian session on Monday. The hawkish stance of the Federal Reserve (Fed) might weigh on the yellow metal. However, the softer Greenback after the weaker inflation report could cap its downside.

The Fed lowered interest rates in the December meeting as expected but signaled that it will slow the pace at which borrowing costs fall any further. The Fed’s dot plot, a chart that projects the future path of interest rates, indicated a half-percentage point rate cut in 2025, compared with a full percentage cut projected in September. This, in turn, continues to lift the US Dollar (USD) and undermine the USD-denominated Gold as higher real interest rates increase the opportunity cost of gold.

On the other hand, softer-than-expected US inflation data could help limit the precious metal’s losses. The US inflation, as measured by the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index, rose to 2.4% YoY in November from 2.3% in October. The reading came in below the market consensus of 2.5%. Meanwhile, the Core PCE jumped 2.8% in November, compared to 2.8% In the previous reading, but below the 2.9% expected.

The upturn in Gold demand in China might contribute to the yellow metal’s upside as China is the world’s largest Gold consumer nation. With less than 6 weeks until Chinese New Year, the world’s heaviest gold-buying festival overtakes Diwali in India. Additionally, the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East could boost the safe-haven flows, benefiting the Gold price.

Gold FAQs

Gold has played a key role in human’s history as it has been widely used as a store of value and medium of exchange. Currently, apart from its shine and usage for jewelry, the precious metal is widely seen as a safe-haven asset, meaning that it is considered a good investment during turbulent times. Gold is also widely seen as a hedge against inflation and against depreciating currencies as it doesn’t rely on any specific issuer or government.

Central banks are the biggest Gold holders. In their aim to support their currencies in turbulent times, central banks tend to diversify their reserves and buy Gold to improve the perceived strength of the economy and the currency. High Gold reserves can be a source of trust for a country’s solvency. Central banks added 1,136 tonnes of Gold worth around $70 billion to their reserves in 2022, according to data from the World Gold Council. This is the highest yearly purchase since records began. Central banks from emerging economies such as China, India and Turkey are quickly increasing their Gold reserves.

Gold has an inverse correlation with the US Dollar and US Treasuries, which are both major reserve and safe-haven assets. When the Dollar depreciates, Gold tends to rise, enabling investors and central banks to diversify their assets in turbulent times. Gold is also inversely correlated with risk assets. A rally in the stock market tends to weaken Gold price, while sell-offs in riskier markets tend to favor the precious metal.

The price can move due to a wide range of factors. Geopolitical instability or fears of a deep recession can quickly make Gold price escalate due to its safe-haven status. As a yield-less asset, Gold tends to rise with lower interest rates, while higher cost of money usually weighs down on the yellow metal. Still, most moves depend on how the US Dollar (USD) behaves as the asset is priced in dollars (XAU/USD). A strong Dollar tends to keep the price of Gold controlled, whereas a weaker Dollar is likely to push Gold prices up.

GBP Holds Key Support (Video)

By |2024-12-23T14:33:19+02:00December 23, 2024|Forex News, News|0 Comments

  • The British pound initially did fall a bit during the trading session against the US dollar on Friday, dipping below the 1.25 level.
  • However, we have since seen the market turn around quite drastically, reaching all the way back to the 1.26 level.
  • This is a potential double bottom that a lot of people will be paying attention to. This is also an area that has mattered for a while, so there is that as well.

If we can continue to rally, I think the British pound probably goes looking to the 1.2750 level in general. This is a market that I think you have to be somewhat cautious with your optimism, but you also have to realize that market participants will continue to see a lot of concerns with the bond markets, especially with the US yields spiking the way they had recently. This market continues to pay close attention to the bond markets.

The 50 Day EMA

If we were to take out the 50 day EMA, then the market goes looking to the 1.30 level. However, there is a lot of work to be done between now and then before that actually happens. And I do think that the interest rates in America will remain a little bit elevated as the 2025 year is likely to see less interest rate cuts than people had anticipated out of the Federal Reserve.

If we do drop from here and break down below the lows of the trading session on Friday, then it’s possible that the British pound drops down to the 1.23 level. I do favor shorting this pair on signs of exhaustion after short-term rallies. We’ve had the rally, but we haven’t had the exhaustion. So with that, you have to keep an open mind, at least until the market tells you that we are in fact going in one direction or the other.
