XAU/USD defends key $2,545 support; what’s next?

By |2024-11-15T07:03:10+02:00November 15, 2024|Forex News, News|0 Comments

  • Gold sellers take a breather on Friday, bracing for more US data and Fedspeak.
  • The US Dollar and Treasury yields consolidate Fed Chair Powell speech-led upside.
  • Gold price rebounds from critical $2,545 support but the daily RSI remains bearish.

Gold price is looking to build on the previous rebound early Friday in search of a fresh impetus amid persistent US Dollar (USD) buying and mixed activity data from China.

Gold price struggles as US data looms

Even though China’s Retail Sales data jumped by 4.8% in October, Industrial Production disappointed markets with a 5.3% growth in the same period. The Fixed Asset Investment stayed unchanged at 3.4% in the year through October.

The mixed Chinese data dump amplified economic concerns as markets remain wary over the country’s stimulus efforts to ramp up growth. Asian stocks are a mixed bag so far this Friday, with the sentiment undermined by the decline in Chinese indices.

The uncertainty around the future interest rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve (Fed) also remains a drag on the markets, especially after Fed Chair Jerome Powell said late Thursday that there was no need to rush rate cuts with the economy still growing, the job market solid and inflation still above the 2% target, tempering expectations for a rate cut next month, per Reuters.

The US Dollar saw a fresh leg higher as the short-end US Treasury bond yields rallied hard on Powell’s hawkish shit, sending non-yielding Gold price as low as $2,537. However, bargain hunting crept in and allowed Gold price to recover some ground.

The focus now shifts toward a fresh batch of US economic data releases, including the top-tier Retail Sales report, for a fresh direction impetus. Meanwhile, more speeches from Fed policymakers will also entertain traders as they guage whether the Fed will continue its easing trajectory beyond December.

According to Reuters, “Fed fund futures for next year slumped with December off seven ticks and imply just 71 basis points of rate cuts by end-2025. A rate cut next month is no longer a high-probability event, with just 61% priced in, down from 82.5% in the prior session.”

The hawkish turn in the Fed’s policy stance was also backed by the US Producer Price Index (PPI) data for October, which was released on Thursday. The annual headline PPI increased 2.4% in October after rising 1.9% in September, adding signs of the economy losing disinflationary momentum.

Gold price technical analysis: Daily chart

The short-term technical outlook for Gold price remains more or less the same, with any recovery attempts likely to be short-lived as long as the 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) stays bearish.

As of writing, the leading indicator rebounds slightly to near 34 after prodding the oversold threshold a day ago.

This RSI movement correlates to the Gold price recovery from the critical support of $2,545, the confluence of the 100-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) and the September 18 low.

Gold buyers need to recapture the $2,580 demand area on a daily closing basis to extend the turnaround above $2,600.

Further up, the November 13 high of $2,619 will test the bearish commitments.

On the flip side, the immediate support is seen at the abovementioned strong support of $2,545.

A sustained break below the last will initiate a fresh downtrend toward the $2,500 threshold, with the next bearish target seen at the September 4 low of $2,472.

Gold FAQs

Gold has played a key role in human’s history as it has been widely used as a store of value and medium of exchange. Currently, apart from its shine and usage for jewelry, the precious metal is widely seen as a safe-haven asset, meaning that it is considered a good investment during turbulent times. Gold is also widely seen as a hedge against inflation and against depreciating currencies as it doesn’t rely on any specific issuer or government.

Central banks are the biggest Gold holders. In their aim to support their currencies in turbulent times, central banks tend to diversify their reserves and buy Gold to improve the perceived strength of the economy and the currency. High Gold reserves can be a source of trust for a country’s solvency. Central banks added 1,136 tonnes of Gold worth around $70 billion to their reserves in 2022, according to data from the World Gold Council. This is the highest yearly purchase since records began. Central banks from emerging economies such as China, India and Turkey are quickly increasing their Gold reserves.

Gold has an inverse correlation with the US Dollar and US Treasuries, which are both major reserve and safe-haven assets. When the Dollar depreciates, Gold tends to rise, enabling investors and central banks to diversify their assets in turbulent times. Gold is also inversely correlated with risk assets. A rally in the stock market tends to weaken Gold price, while sell-offs in riskier markets tend to favor the precious metal.

The price can move due to a wide range of factors. Geopolitical instability or fears of a deep recession can quickly make Gold price escalate due to its safe-haven status. As a yield-less asset, Gold tends to rise with lower interest rates, while higher cost of money usually weighs down on the yellow metal. Still, most moves depend on how the US Dollar (USD) behaves as the asset is priced in dollars (XAU/USD). A strong Dollar tends to keep the price of Gold controlled, whereas a weaker Dollar is likely to push Gold prices up.

Supplement trade associations respond to RFK, Jr.’s HHS nomination

By |2024-11-15T05:43:12+02:00November 15, 2024|Dietary Supplements News, News|0 Comments

If confirmed by the Senate, Kennedy, who ran for President as an independent before dropping out and endorsing former President Trump, would take responsibility for HHS, which includes the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the regulatory agency responsible for the regulation of food and dietary supplements.

In a post on X on Oct. 25, Kennedy stated: “FDA’s war on public health is about to end. This includes its aggressive suppression of psychedelics, peptides, stem cells, raw milk, hyperbaric therapies, chelating compounds, ivermectin, hydroxychloroquine, vitamins, clean foods, sunshine, exercise, nutraceuticals and anything else that advances human health and can’t be patented by Pharma. If you work for the FDA and are part of this corrupt system, I have two messages for you: 1. Preserve your records, and 2. Pack your bags.”

Reaction

Following news of RFK, Jr.’s nomination, NutraIngredients-USA canvassed opinion from the dietary supplement industry’s main trade associations.

Daniel Fabricant, PhD, president and CEO of the Natural Products Association, stated that his organization is excited about the nomination. “The FDA is in need of serious reform. President-elect Trump’s nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. spotlights the need for this reform,” he said. “We are excited about this nomination because Americans value health, freedom and natural products.”

Loren Israelsen, president of the United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA), told us: “The incoming administration promised change. The nomination of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is a clear example of keeping that promise. Should he be confirmed by the Senate, this will mean peril for some and opportunity for others.

Dogecoin Price To $3, XRP To $5, And PNUT To $5? Analyst Shocks Crypto With 12-Month Forecast

By |2024-11-15T05:15:36+02:00November 15, 2024|Crypto News, News|0 Comments

Bullish sentiment is at its peak and crypto market participants are projecting a continued upside for the Dogecoin pice in the coming weeks and months. According to crypto analyst Ash Crypto, the crypto market is going to continue on this run into the next six to twelve months. Notably, he projects the Bitcoin price reaching between $150,000 and $250,000 in the next six to 12 months, with the Ethereum price also climbing to highs between $10,000 and $15,000

However, his projection extends beyond these prominent cryptocurrency heavyweights. Most notable is the Dogecoin price prediction of $3, XRP to $5, and PNT to $5.

Interesting Price Targets For Dogecoin Price, XRP, And PNUT

Ash Crypto shared an optimistic outlook on 16 cryptocurrencies with his 1.2 million followers on social media platform X, all with seemingly ultra-bullish price targets. Although the bullish outlook wasn’t accompanied by a technical analysis, it resonates with a currently bullish crypto community.

Unsurprisingly, Dogecoin, who has been on a crazy surge in the past four weeks, made the cut. At the time of writing, Dogecoin has surged by 235% in the past 30 days, currently trading around $0.39, and reached as high as $0.4289 within the last 24 hours. Interestingly, Ash Crypto believes this surge will continue into the next six to twelve months, with the Dogecoin price reaching between $1 and $3. Achieving this range would signify gains of 133% to 600% from the current price.

One of the more intriguing predictions focused on Peanut the Squirrel (PNUT), a relatively new entrant in the cryptocurrency market. Newly launched on the Solana blockchain, PNUT has quickly established itself as a standout performer. Within 48 hours of its Binance listing, PNUT’s market cap surged past the $1 billion mark, making it one of the fastest-growing assets in this cycle.

At the time of writing, PNUT is trading at $2.05, having surged by 3,785% in 30 days. Ash Crypto has projected PNUT’s price could climb to a range of $3 to $5 within the next six to twelve months. However, given its current trajectory and rapid price gains, it’s possible that these targets could be achieved sooner before the end of the year.

Pivoting to XRP, which is currently trading at $0.6885, Ash Crypto highlighted an XRP price range of $3 to $5 in the next six to 12 months. This would see the XRP price finally breaking past its $3.40 all-time high that has held on for the past seven years.

Other Notable Price Targets

Other predictions for the next six to 12 months are BNB between $900 and $1,400, SOL between $450 and $800, DOT between $50 and $120, APT between $60 and $100, SUI between $6 and $8, LINK between $250 and $500, AVAX between $200 and $300, ICP between $120 and $160, INJ between $180 and $250, TIA between $100 and $150, and MANTA between $30 and $70.

The 7 Best Collagen Supplements For Your Hair, Skin, and Nail Glow Up

By |2024-11-15T03:42:07+02:00November 15, 2024|Dietary Supplements News, News|0 Comments

Who doesn’t want healthy hair, skin and nails? While hair, skin, and nails vitamins have been around forever, they don’t quite offer the same powerhouse lineup of promises that collagen does. And if you’re at all immersed in the supplement world (or the internet) you’ve probably been hearing a lot about it lately.

So, what is collagen? First, it makes up 30% of our body’s protein. According to the Cleveland Clinic, it “provides structure, support or strength to your skin, muscles, bones and connective tissues.” The clinic adds, “a well-balanced diet gives your body the raw ingredients it needs to help it make collagen naturally.” However, many people have been taking collagen supplements to bolster this process.

a quick look at the best collagen supplements

collagen benefits

As is the case with a lot of supplements, substantial scientific literature is lacking. However, individuals who take collagen supplements report anecdotal benefits that they’ve experienced themselves.

Collagen’s role in the body is to replace dead skin cells and help new cells grow, help skin strengthen and maintain elasticity, and help protect your organs. As we age, our collagen decreases, and we see this through natural signs of aging. That’s why collagen (derived from animals) is used in anti-aging beauty products.

So, whether you’re looking for the best collagen skin serum or the best collagen powder to mix into your protein shakes, we’ve gathered up some of the best collagen health and wellness products for your journey.

Best collagen protein powder – Sports Research Collagen Peptides for Women & Men

There’s something about a protein shake that just feels like one of the most natural ways to take your supplements: mix a little powder into your favorite recipe, and you’re good to go. If that’s your style, then the Sports Research Collagen Peptides for Women & Men powder might be the best collagen supplement for you to start experimenting with. This is also a great pick for athletes. The brand explains why. “Amino acids support joint health and improve your body’s response to strenuous exercise, making this collagen powder a great post-workout supplement and joint support supplement.”

Appealingly, this collagen powder is unflavored, so you won’t even notice it’s there in your shakes. On Amazon, over 130,000 people have reviewed this supplement, and it’s come out on top with a 4.6-star rating.

“I can’t say enough good things about these sport collagen peptides,” says reviewer Christy. “I’ve been using them for months now, and I love them so much that I have a subscription. They mix effortlessly into my post-workout shakes with no taste or grit, making it easy to incorporate into my routine. Since starting, I’ve noticed improved joint support, faster recovery times, and healthier hair and skin. It’s become an essential part of my fitness regimen. If you’re serious about performance and recovery, this is a must-try!”

Best collagen gummies – OLLY Glowing Skin Collagen Gummy

OLLY is another trusted brand in the gummy supplement scene: I know plenty of people who swear by the brand’s sleep gummies. Therefore, I was not surprised in the least to discover that OLLY makes one of the best collagen gummies on the market. The OLLY Glowing Skin Collagen Gummy combines collagen with Hyaluronic Acid and Sea Buckthorn to provide customers with a formula that keeps skin feeling hydrated and youthful. I also love that they’re naturally flavored, with no artificial colors or flavors ever being added in.

Over on Amazon, the gummies have earned at 4.5-star rating with nearly 6,000 reviews. One shopper says, “Since incorporating these gummies into my daily routine, I’ve noticed several positive changes: My skin feels more hydrated and plump, thanks to the hyaluronic acid The collagen seems to be helping with skin firmness and smoothness. I’ve noticed a subtle, healthy glow that wasn’t there before.” Another says, “I was having dry skin and tried so many creams and drank a ton of water, but nothing helped until I started taking these.”

Best greens and collagen powder – JSHealth Super Greens Powder

Last year, I had a weird spot on my scalp that was thinning. My best friend is a dermatologist, and she told me to take JSHealth Hair + Energy Vitamins. Sure enough, it fixed the issue and it never came back. While I haven’t had the JSHealth Super Greens + Collagen Powder, I trust JSHealth as a brand and would 100% click add to cart if I was looking to increase my greens intake and collagen. The greens powder is packed with vitamins and minerals for overall wellness, while the collagen works to nourish your body’s signs of aging. The flavor profile is a unique mix of pineapple and mint, and plenty of JSHealth customers rave about it.

“I’ve tried almost all of the major greens brands and am obsessed with this greens,” says one shopper. “I have gone through 4 tubs now and use it daily. The flavor is so good and I have noticed a difference in my digestion and skin!”

Best collagen skincare kit – Solabiome Glowing Skin Starter Kit

If you’re looking to overhaul your skincare routine in the name of glowy collagen goodness, then you’ll want to check out this Solabiome Glowing Skin Starter Kit from Solawave. Solawave makes a treasure trove of skincare tech products, using red light therapy and massage therapy to nourish skin. The brand also makes a line of serums that can be used with or without the Solawave wands and gadgets (though those are a dream, too).

The kit comes with four different products: a cleanser, mist, serum, and moisturizer. While they all work together to bring about blissed-out harmony, the standout player is the collagen-packed Plumping Peptide Serum.

“These four products have been a game changer for me and give me the perfect regimen for taking care of my skin,” writes one shopper. “These products work so well together and make my skin feel amazing. These products with the red light therapy are making a difference and giving me extra confidence to look my best. It just goes to show that it’s never too late to have a good skin care regime!”

Best affordable collagen serum – Tree of Life Beauty Skin Care Set

Don’t feel like dropping $100+ on a skincare set? That’s okay. There are more affordable collagen serums out there, and one of the best options is the Tree of Life Beauty Skin Care Set. Like the Solawave kit, it comes with other products. In this case, a Vitamin C serum and a Nilaclamide Serum.

According to the brand, “This trio assists with collagen production for complexion-correcting youthful radiance.” Plus, it has a fast-acting formula to help you feel motorized right when you need it. These products are mild and free of harsh chemicals, so they’re okay for folks with sensitive (or dry) skin, too. Over 77,000 people have reviewed the set on Amazon, and it has a 4+ star rating to match.

“I hardly ever turn around 2 weeks after purchase of a skincare product totally ready to gush over how much I love it,’ says one shopper. “The changes in my skin’s tone and texture mere days after beginning use was noticeable and very exciting! My skin tone is smoother and firmer without a doubt.”

Best collagen hair mask – Vitamins Keratin Hair Mask Deep Conditioner

Serums and supplements aren’t the only way for you to get your collagen. Collagen hair products exist, and this Vitamins Keratin Hair Mask Deep Conditioner is one of the best ones if you’re looking for a nourishing, deep treatment for dry, damaged, or colored hair. Not only does it moisturize your hair and help give it a salon look, but it actually helps promote hair growth thanks to the collagen. If it sounds too good to be true, I hear ya – but there’s 17,000+ reviewers on Amazon, and over 80% of them are 4 and 5 stars.

“I cannot say enough good things about this Keratin Hair Mask,” says Natalie. “From the very first use, my hair felt softer, smoother, and so much healthier. I have color-treated hair that tends to get dry and brittle, but this mask worked wonders. The combination of biotin, collagen, and oil is like a miracle blend—it leaves my hair shiny without weighing it down. If you’re looking for salon quality treatment at home, this is it!”

Best collagen powder with vitamins – Multi Collagen Peptides Powder

If you’re already building up quite the supplement collection and are trying to consolidate, then the Multi Collagen Peptides Powder might be for you. Its blend includes biotin and hyaluronic acid – plus Vitamin C. Together, the formula works not only to help your body form new collagen but to also rejuvenate any that you already have. Vitamin C is a known supporter of collagen production, but it also helps with overall immune support—making it a good pick if you have overall immunity boosting health goals.

One Amazon shopper says, “I have been taking it for a month now and i can see the changes. I mix it with my coffee every morning and it does not taste like anything. It is very effective. I can feel my skin getting better, nails getting stronger and my joints pain especially around my elbows getting lighter. It mixes good with hot water or coffee.” Another says, “This collagen is great value.”

Happy glow-up!

Analyst Predicts XRP Price if Cardano is Able to Reach $1.89

By |2024-11-15T03:14:29+02:00November 15, 2024|Crypto News, News|0 Comments

An analyst predicts XRP could surge by nearly 400% if Cardano (ADA) reclaims the $1.89 price level amid the ongoing bull run.

The crypto bull market is intensifying as the new week begins, with top altcoins like XRP and Cardano (ADA) showing impressive price gains. Remarkably, both assets have successfully recaptured the long-lost $0.60 level.

XRP and Cardano Price Movement

XRP hit an intraday peak of $0.6160 on Sunday, which is approximately 25% up from the $0.50 level it traded last week. Notably, XRP was last seen around the $0.61 mark six weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Cardano has rallied even stronger than XRP. Today, ADA touched $0.6523 for the first time in seven months. Notably, ADA’s comeback saw it surge by 51% from a low of $0.4327 to $0.6523 in one day. Meanwhile, XRP’s intraday gain was 12%, rising from $0.5188 to $0.6160.

This price surge in both altcoins follows Bitcoin’s recent all-time high above $80,000, fueling the market’s growing intensity.

Until now, XRP and ADA had been laggards, showing minimal movement in the bull market, leading some critics to label both assets as “dead.” However, the tide is now turning as both coins reclaim multi-week highs.

Now, market analysts believe there’s still more upside potential for these assets, despite the recent explosive gains, with some issuing bold price targets.

Outlook for Cardano

In a recent post on X, a market commentator with the username “Cryptohodlpod” shared his price targets for prominent assets like XRP, ADA, and Bitcoin.

For Bitcoin, he proposed a target of $170K, which represents an additional $90K increase from its current price—a 112.5% gain. Notably, the analyst also suggested ADA could rally to $1.89.

He identified $1.89 as the most promising price target for Cardano this cycle. While still far from ADA’s previous all-time high, this would represent an 83% gain from its current price of $0.65.

XRP Price if ADA Reaches $1.89

As for XRP, the analyst suggested that if ADA reaches $1.89, XRP could peak at $3.01 this cycle. From the current price of $0.61, this would represent a massive 393% upside for XRP. However, even with this surge, XRP would still be well below its all-time high of $3.84.

While this analyst has proposed a conservative outlook for both Cardano and XRP, other market watchers have issued more optimistic predictions. For instance, analyst Ali Martinez has suggested that ADA could hit $7 to $10 in this cycle.

At the same time, several other analysts have suggested similar bullish targets for XRP, which they view as realistic given the current market conditions.

PHILADELPHIA — In this video, Nancy S. Reau, MD, FAASLD, AGAF, discusses the impact certain herbal and dietary supplements may have on the liver, especially among patients with underlying liver disease.

The data were presented at the ACG Annual Scientific Meeting.

“It does suggest that green tea extract and turmeric might be a cautionary tale in your patients who have underlying liver disease, especially metabolic dysfunction-associated liver disease,” Reau, the Richard B. Capps Chair of Hepatology, associate director of solid organ transplantation and section chief of hepatology at Rush University, told Healio. “These are two things you may want to monitor if a patient is interested in taking that.”

UBS raises USD/JPY forecast, says another jump to 160 is possible By Investing.com

By |2024-11-15T01:14:24+02:00November 15, 2024|Forex News, News|0 Comments

Investing.com — UBS has raised its forecast for the in a note Thursday, expecting significant fluctuations in the exchange rate over the coming year.

The bank now projects the currency pair to reach 155 by December 2024, followed by 152 in March 2025, 150 in June, and 147 in September.

By year-end 2025, UBS targets 145, a revision from its earlier predictions of 147, 143, 140, and 138, respectively.

According to UBS, a near-term surge to 158-160 remains possible, especially if U.S. 10-year yields rise another 30-40 basis points, potentially hitting 4.8%.

“Based on sensitivity analysis over the past three years, a 10bp widening of the US-Japan 10-year yield differential coincides with a one-yen rise in the USDJPY exchange rate,” UBS explained.

If U.S. bond yields indeed spike to 4.8%, the bank says USD/JPY could temporarily reach 160, though they view this level as “unsustainable” and likely to invite Japanese intervention, as observed during similar peaks earlier in 2024.

UBS analysts believe the USD/JPY will face downward pressure in 2025, driven by several factors. A key factor is the anticipated Fed rate-cutting cycle, which UBS expects will lead to lower U.S. yields.

“We think current USDJPY levels are higher than justified by yield differentials,” UBS notes, estimating that the currency pair should trend toward 145-146.

Additionally, trade tensions and a potential Trump-led administration’s focus on a stronger yen may reinforce this trend.

For investors, UBS suggests that any near-term spike toward 160 could be an opportunity to “tactically sell USDJPY.” Over the long term, UBS sees multiple forces supporting a downtrend, with USD/JPY likely to end 2025 at 145.

Ripple Could Hit $3 as in 2018 Soon, but RCOF Could Rise Above it from $0.05 » The Merkle News

By |2024-11-15T01:13:11+02:00November 15, 2024|Crypto News, News|0 Comments

When the XRP price shot past $3 in 2018, it carved its place as a crypto powerhouse. This record rise occurred due to increased adoption, heightened speculative trading and an overall bullish sentiment in the market.

Despite having experienced some significant lows, current market conditions show that XRP is ready for a repeat performance.

While XRP is poised for another strong run, a new, lower-priced player is drawing attention: RCO Finance (RCOF). Priced at $0.05 in its presale, this altcoin has the potential to grow even faster than XRP.

XRP Price Prediction: Will Ripple Reach $3 Again?

At the start of 2018, Ripple’s XRP reached an impressive all-time high of $3.84. But it went down, and now, despite its recent struggles, the XRP price is staging a massive rally to push past the $3 mark.

These are some factors contributing to this bold prediction. There have been positive regulatory shifts, such as Ripple’s recent win against the SEC. A favorable outcome could clear up all the uncertainty surrounding XRP’s state.

With Donald Trump winning the presidential race, there’s renewed hope for regulatory clarity. He promised to reform the SEC and bring some clarity to the sector.

XRP is being adopted more widely across various industries. Its use for cross-border payments is on the rise, as it offers a more cost-effective and quicker solution than the conventional banking system. As more banks and financial institutions adopt blockchain technology, XRP integration with financial systems will increase.

The growing implementation of RippleNet and its On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) service demonstrates the practical applications of its token, further driving up the XRP price.

RCO Finance (RCOF): Why This $0.05 Altcoin Could Outshine XRP’s Gains

While the resurgence of the XRP price is becoming possible daily, RCO Finance is emerging as a low-priced alternative that could achieve tremendous growth, even surpassing XRP.

Natural Gas Price Forecast: Bearish Reversal May Test Key Support

By |2024-11-15T01:00:23+02:00November 15, 2024|Forex News, News|0 Comments

Strong Bearish Momentum

Given the strong bearish momentum seen in today’s wide range red candle, it looks like natural gas may have a plan to test support again around the 20-Day MA, which is currently at 2.64. It is now lined up with a minor swing low, also at 2.64. Together, they indicate stronger potential support than if they were alone. A little lower is the 50-Day MA at 2.59, followed by a prior swing low at 2.51. Either price area may see signs of support.

Risk of Bearish Weekly Pattern

Nonetheless, since there is only one more trading day for the week, if downward pressure remains on Friday, there is a chance natural gas will complete the week with a bearish shooting star candlestick pattern. That would provide a potentially bearish weekly setup heading into next week. Once one side of a consolidation pattern is tested as either support or resistance, there is the potential to eventually test the other side of the pattern.

Natural gas found resistance this week around the top boundary line of a large symmetrical triangle pattern. A bullish breakout of the triangle would occur on a sustained rally above the prior sein high at 3.02. But since resistance was seen leading to today’s selloff, there is the potential to test support eventually near the bottom of the pattern. This doesn’t mean it will do so, but it does indicate selling pressure and that could provide a surprise to the downside.

Key Support Defined by 50-Day MA

Nevertheless, until there is a decisive decline below the 50-Day MA, the likelihood of finding support that leads to a bullish reversal at or above the 50-Day line is the dominant thesis. A drop sustained decline below the 50-Day line would possibly lead to a retest of support around the 200-Day MA, currently at 2.24.

How Much Vitamin C Do You Need Per Day?

By |2024-11-14T23:40:13+02:00November 14, 2024|Dietary Supplements News, News|0 Comments

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin needed for essential body processes. The human body does not make or store vitamin C, and it eliminates any excess in the urine. You must get enough vitamin C daily from food or supplements.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant, helping protect cells from damage by highly reactive oxygen molecules called free radicals. The body needs vitamin C to make skin collagen (a structural protein) and improve iron absorption. It also helps the immune system protect the body from disease.

The recommended amounts of vitamin C vary by age and are measured in milligrams (mg). Vitamin C deficiency is rare in the United States, and while taking too much vitamin C isn’t dangerous, it is always a good idea to take only the recommended daily amounts.

Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) by Life Stage

You need to get enough vitamin C to support your immune health and other body functions. However, most people do not need vitamin C supplementation because they get enough in food and drinks.

The amount of vitamin C you need will depend on your age and the amount of vitamin C you can get from your diet.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends the following doses of vitamin C daily:

  • Babies and infants: 40–50 mg
  • Children ages 1 to 8: 15–25 mg
  • Children ages 9 to 13: 45 mg
  • Teens ages 14 to 18: 65–75 mg
  • Adults: 75–90 mg
  • Pregnant teens and adults: 80–85 mg
  • Breastfeeding or chestfeeding teens and adults: 115–120 mg

Within the NIH ranges, males need higher amounts of vitamin C. If you are pregnant or lactating, you will also need higher amounts. If you are pregnant, it is not a good idea to take vitamin C supplements without first talking to a healthcare provider.

People who smoke have higher vitamin C needs. The NIH recommends an additional 35 mg of the vitamin if you are a smoker.

How Much Vitamin C Do You Need for Specific Goals?

Vitamin C is known for boosting immunity and reducing oxidative stress (an imbalance between antioxidants and damaging free radicals in cells). It also has other health benefits.

Boosting Immunity

One of the main reasons for taking vitamin C supplements is to boost immunity, as vitamin C can be vital to various areas of the immune system.

Ways in which vitamin C can boost the immune system include:

  • It encourages the production of lymphocytes and phagocytes, white blood cells that protect the body from infection.
  • It helps white blood cells function more effectively while protecting them from free radicals. These harmful molecules are responsible for oxidative stress and chronic disease.
  • It may prevent and treat respiratory and systemic infections. For a preventive effect, you would need at least 100–200 mg per day. However, treating an infection would require significantly higher doses of vitamin C to reduce the inflammatory response and metabolic demand.
  • It plays a vital part in the skin’s defense system, acting as an antioxidant, supporting collagen production, protecting skin from sun damage, promoting wound healing, and boosting skin hydration.

Low levels of vitamin C are linked to poor health outcomes. Research shows that low vitamin C can put people at risk for inflammatory conditions.

Reducing Cancer Risk

Some research suggests that vitamin C intake in foods may reduce the risk of some cancer types. A 2021 Antioxidants review finds that consuming vitamin C from foods could potentially decrease the risk of pancreatic, breast, and pulmonary cancers. Still, more research is needed to confirm such findings.

The same report also suggests that vitamin C, already used as a complementary cancer therapy, can be administered in high doses to treat certain cancers. Research on safety and efficacy in this area is ongoing.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) reports some healthcare practitioners already use intravenous (IV) vitamin C to treat cancer, fatigue, and infections. According to the NCI, IV administration of vitamin C in doses of over 500 mg produces a higher blood concentration of ascorbate (a biologically active form of vitamin C) than oral supplementation.

Lowering Risk for Metabolic Syndrome

Vitamin C may help lower your risk for conditions associated with metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of three or more conditions that increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and diabetes. These conditions include high blood pressure, high blood sugar, abdominal obesity, high triglyceride levels, and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (considered “good” cholesterol).

Research on vitamin C supplementation has shown reduced risk and improved conditions. The dosing for such studies falls between 100 mg and 150 mg.

Improving Cardiovascular Health

According to a 2020 review, Vitamin C has positive effects on cardiovascular health and blood flow. While the effects of vitamin C on heart health are promising, the authors note that more research is needed to confirm whether vitamin C alone can prevent cardiovascular disease.

Most clinical studies recommend 500 to 1,000 mg of vitamin C daily for heart health. The NIH’s daily recommendations are much lower, at 75 mg to 90 mg.

Managing Blood Pressure

Studies have found that vitamin C may help to lower blood pressure in both people with hypertension (high blood pressure) and people without the condition.

One 2024 study aimed to evaluate the effect of a vitamin C supplement (130 mg) with a beverage containing 278.7 mg of flavonoids.

The results showed that vitamin C and flavonoids helped to prevent elevated blood pressure caused by heat exposure. The researchers attributed this to how vitamin C inhibits oxidative stress. While these results are promising, the long-term effects of vitamin C on blood pressure are not known.

Reducing Uric Acid

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by high uric acid levels. It involves inflammation of the joints, often in the big toes. Gout attacks can cause severe swelling and pain.

A 2021 study found a strong link between vitamin C supplementation and decreased uric acid levels. In this study, a 500 mg daily vitamin C intake reduced uric acid levels.

While the researchers found the findings promising, they did not feel there was enough evidence to recommend vitamin C supplementation as a method of gout prevention or treatment.

Preventing Iron Deficiency

If you have an iron deficiency, your body does not have enough iron to produce the hemoglobin in red blood cells that carries oxygen to your organs and tissues. Vitamin C can improve iron absorption.

One 2020 clinical trial examined the effect of oral iron supplements and iron supplements in combination with vitamin C on treating iron deficiency anemia. It found that combining iron and vitamin C improved hemoglobin levels much better than treating with iron alone.

The dosing in this study was 100 mg iron and 200 mg vitamin C.

Promoting Eye Health

Some research suggests that vitamin C may reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, 500 mg of vitamin C, combined with vitamin E, zinc, copper, lutein, and zeaxanthin, may decrease the risk for AMD.

Vitamin C may also delay the development of cataracts, which are a clouding of the eye’s normally clear lens caused by aging and diabetes.

Who Might Especially Benefit From Vitamin C?

Research shows that some people may benefit from a higher vitamin C intake. This includes:

  • Smokers and people exposed to secondhand smoke: Smokers have an up to 3 times higher risk for vitamin C deficiency due to a more significant turnover of vitamin C in the body. Cigarette smoking also increases free radicals in the body, which causes a depletion of antioxidants as they work to repair damage. Exposure to secondhand smoke can also decrease vitamin C levels.
  • Infants fed evaporated or boiled milk: Infants in developed countries are fed human milk and/or infant formula, which are vital to meeting vitamin C requirements. However, infants who are given evaporated or boiled milk cannot meet their daily vitamin C recommendations.
  • People with limited food options: Fruits and vegetables are the best sources of vitamin C. People who do not have access to these foods may not get enough vitamin C in their diets. This can include older adults, those who can’t prepare their own food, people with alcohol or other substance use disorders, people with mental illness, and children who might not get enough vitamin C from their diet.
  • People with malabsorption and certain chronic diseases: Some medical conditions can reduce the body’s ability to absorb vitamin C. Conditions that may lead to malabsorption include celiac disease, lactose intolerance, cystic fibrosis, and bowel resection.

Additional health factors can affect a person’s vitamin C status. These include:

  • Body weight
  • Disease states, including severe infections and conditions like cardiovascular disease and cancer
  • Genetics
  • Pregnancy and lactation

Can You Get Too Much Vitamin C?

Vitamin C toxicity is rare. The most common side effect of high vitamin C is gastrointestinal (GI) distress.

GI symptoms from too much vitamin C include diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. High amounts of vitamin C may also cause headaches. If you experience these symptoms after a high vitamin C dose, cutting back or stopping supplementation can help you feel better.

How Much Is Too Much?

If you take more than 2,000 mg of vitamin C at once, you will most likely experience digestive symptoms. GI side effects and headaches are commonly seen in people who take high doses of vitamin C supplements.

Food vs. Supplements: Which Source Is Better?

Many foods contain vitamin C, especially fruits and vegetables. You can get the recommended amounts of vitamin C from food if you are eating a balanced diet.

For most people, getting their vitamin C from food is better than taking supplements. If you are getting enough vitamin C from your diet, you likely will not need to supplement.

Top Foods Packed With Vitamin C

All fruits and vegetables contain vitamin C. Raw fruits and vegetables are the best sources of vitamin C. Cooking vitamin-rich foods or storing them for long periods can reduce their amount of vitamin C.

Fruits with the highest amounts of vitamin C include:

  • Berries, such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and cranberries
  • Cantaloupe
  • Citrus fruits and juices
  • Kiwifruit
  • Tropical fruits, including mango and pineapple
  • Watermelon

Vegetables from the highest amounts of vitamin C include:

  • Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, and cauliflower
  • Green and red peppers
  • Leafy green vegetables, including spinach, cabbage, and kale
  • Sweet and white potatoes
  • Tomatoes and tomato juice
  • Vegetable juices

Various cereals, foods, and beverages are fortified with vitamin C. This means that vitamin C has been added to them. Check product labels to see which foods and beverages are vitamin C fortified.

What to Look for in a Vitamin C Supplement

When purchasing vitamin C supplements, consider their quality, price, form, and packaging:

  • Quality: Purchase your supplements from reputable companies that source ingredients well and follow the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines for Good Manufacturing Processes.
  • Price: Compare different brands to find one that fits your budget.
  • Form: The main form of vitamin C is ascorbic acid. Research has not found various chemical formulations to be significantly different. You will want to pick a formulation that is easy to take. Vitamin C supplements come in liquids, powders, chewable and swallowable pills, and capsules.
  • Packaging: Choose supplements sold in dark or tinted glass bottles and airless delivery to prevent oxidation and degradation of the vitamin.

What Is Airless Delivery?

Airless delivery in medicine refers to a system in which drug formulations are not in contact with air. This protects them from oxygen, light, moisture, and dirt and ensures stability and shelf life.

Other Vitamin C Health Benefits

Vitamin C has various benefits that are backed by science. It also has claims that are not well supported.

Some unproven claims include:

  • Prevention of eye disease: Some evidence suggests vitamin C in a specific combination with other vitamins and nutrients reduces the risk of progression of some forms of age-related macular degeneration, but it does not prevent or cure the condition. It has also not been proven to delay or prevent cataracts.
  • Prevention of the common cold: While vitamin C can reduce the severity and duration of colds, it cannot prevent them.
  • Reducing cancer risk: Some studies have linked vitamin C to reducing cancers. Others have found that vitamin C does not affect cancer risk.
  • Treatment of lead toxicity: Research shows people with lead toxicity often have low vitamin C levels. However, no evidence shows that supplementation treats or cures lead toxicity.

Summary

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin found in certain foods and supplements. It has various health benefits, including boosting the immune system, lowering blood pressure, protecting against gout attacks, improving iron absorption, and reducing the risk of chronic diseases.

The amount of vitamin C you need will depend on your age and how much you can get from your diet. Supplements are a great and simple way to boost your intake if you are not getting enough vitamin C from your diet. Toxicity and overdose from vitamin C are rare but possible with doses higher than 2,000 mg.

The best way to get enough vitamin C is through your diet. The best food sources of vitamin C are fruits and vegetables. If you are getting enough vitamin C from your diet, you do not need to supplement.
